Shri Vasistha said: When one is firmly established in dispassion towards the world, associated with the good, and the mind is purified by the knowledge of scriptures, then one attains disinterest in worldly pleasures.
When one develops disinterest in worldly objects, is considered a good person, and the heart becomes enlightened and uplifted, then one attains the highest state.
Wealth is not desired by the wise, just as dry leaves are not desired. Even if it is present, it is discarded like dry leaves used in rituals.
bhārāya pānthadṛṣṭyeva dṛśyante dārabandhavaḥ | yathāśakti yathākālamupacaryanta eva ca || 4 ||
Family and relatives are seen as a burden by the wise, just as a traveler sees his luggage. They are cared for according to one's ability and time.
In the playful activities with friends, in auspicious gardens and meals, and in the discussions of scriptures and logic, one does not stay there for long.
By one who is peaceful, self-controlled, delighting in the Self, and silent, knowledge is sought by the knower who is devoted to the path of knowledge alone.
From the transformation of the connection with singular awareness, there is no awareness, no emptiness, nor any objectivity. Know that to be the supreme state.
Having attained the state of cessation, free from thoughts, and deeply silent, one remains established in one's own nature, as if painted in a picture.
O Mahadeva, devoid of all objects, like the supreme atom, the heart of the knower and the known is indeed not empty, though it is of the nature of emptiness.
jñenāmalapadasthana dīpeneva nirasyate tamo hārdaṃ tathā bāhyaṃ rāgadveṣabhayādi ca || 17 ||
By the light of pure knowledge, the darkness of ignorance, both internal and external, as well as attachment, aversion, fear, and so on, are dispelled.
One should bow down to this human sun, who is devoid of passion, who has attained the highest state from goodness, and who has the form of the impossible darkness.
śrīrāma uvāca | īśvaraḥ ko muniśreṣṭha kathaṃ bhaktyā prasādyate etanme tattvato brūhi sarvatattvavidāṃ vara || 21 ||
Sri Rama said: O best of sages, how is the Lord propitiated through devotion? Please explain this to me in detail, O best among the knowers of all truths.
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | īśvaro na mahābuddhe dūre na ca sudurlabhaḥ | mahābodhamayaikātmā svātmaiva parameśvaraḥ || 22 ||
Sri Vasistha said: O wise one, the Lord is neither far away nor very difficult to attain. The Lord, who is the supreme consciousness, is one's own self.
To Him belongs everything, from Him comes everything, He is everything and everywhere. He is the inner self of all, the eternal, and the all-pervading. Salutations to that all-pervading self.
Sri Vasistha said, 'The messenger sent by the Self is called Viveka (discrimination). It resides in the heart, always blissful, like the moon in the sky.'
This Viveka gradually enlightens the individual soul, who is bound by desires, and liberates the one lacking discrimination from the ocean of worldly existence.
This supreme Lord is always pleased by the rituals of chanting, sacrifices, austerities, charity, recitation, and other sacred actions performed by humans, serpents, gods, and demons.
This self-aware consciousness pervades everywhere due to its nature. It moves, awakens, and sees. Therefore, it is perceived through all senses, hands, ears, eyes, and feet.
Having been pleased with the desired worship, the self, giving discrimination here as the purifying messenger, leads the living being to the pure, primordial state through the awakening of truth, good company, and scriptures.
