1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | sarvātmani cidābhāse tadevāśvanubhūyate | saṃvedyate yadevāntarasatyaṃ vastvavastu vā || 1 ||

English

Shri Vasistha said: In the universal self, which is a reflection of consciousness, only that is experienced. Whatever is perceived internally, whether real or unreal, is experienced.

tadevābhyāsataḥ pūrvaṃ bāhyārthānubhavātmanā | sphuratīva bahiṣṭvena svasvapno'tra nidarśanam || 2 ||

English

That same experience, through repeated practice, first appears as an external object. This is like one's own dream, which serves as an example here.

cidrūpaṃ sarvametacca cidacchā gaganādapi | ciccinoti cidevāto naitatkiṃcana kutracit || 3 ||

English

All this is of the nature of consciousness. Consciousness pervades even the sky. Consciousness alone consumes consciousness; there is nothing anywhere.

na nāśo nāsti nānartho na janmamaraṇe na kham | na śūnyatā na nānāsti sarvaṃ brahmaiva naiva ca || 4 ||

English

There is no destruction, no non-existence, no meaninglessness, no birth or death, no sky. There is no emptiness, no diversity; everything is Brahman, and nothing else.

nāśe jagadahaṃtvāderna kiṃcidapi naśyati | asataḥ kila nāśo'pi svapnādeḥ kiṃ nu naśyati || 5 ||

English

In destruction, neither the world nor the sense of 'I' is destroyed. Indeed, even the non-existent is not destroyed. What then is destroyed in a dream?

mithyāvabhāse saṃkalpanagare kaiva naṣṭatātathā jagadahaṃtvādau nāśo nāsati vidyate || 6 ||

English

In the illusory appearance of the city of imagination, how can there be destruction? Thus, there is no destruction of the world in the beginning of the sense of 'I', nor is there non-existence.

kuto jagadupālambha iti cettadavastunina nirṇayaḥ saṃbhavati khapuṣpāṇāṃ kimucyate || 7 ||

English

If it is asked, 'From where does the perception of the world arise?' This determination is made by the non-existent. What is said about the flowers in the sky?

nirṇaya eṣa evātra yadaśeṣamabhāvayanyathāsthitaṃ yadācāraṃ pāṣāṇa iva tiṣṭhasi || 8 ||

English

This is the only determination here, when you do not perceive anything as it is, you stand like a stone, following the behavior.

jagatsaṃkalpamātrātma tatra te'rthayutaṃ kṣaṇātśāmyatyaśeṣeṇetyeva nirṇayaḥ sargavibhrame || 9 ||

English

The essence of the world is mere imagination. There, in an instant, the meaning is understood, and complete peace is attained. This is the determination in the delusion of creation.

sarge'nargala evāyaṃ brahmātmakatayākṣayaḥanyathā tu na sargo'yamasti nāsti ca santi vā || 10 ||

English

In creation, this is indeed without obstruction, imperishable as Brahman. Otherwise, this creation does not exist, nor does it not exist, nor does it exist.

yeṣāṃ ca vidyate sargaḥ svapnapuṃsāmivāsatām | sa sargaḥ puruṣāste ca mṛgatṛṣṇāmbuvīcivat || 11 ||

English

For those who perceive creation as unreal, like a dream or an illusion, that creation and the beings within it are like a mirage.

asatāmeva saddbhāvamiva yeṣāmupaeyuṣām | na vayaṃ nirṇayaṃ vidmo vandhyāputragirāmiva || 12 ||

English

For those who perceive the unreal as real, we cannot determine their true nature, just as the words of a barren woman's son are meaningless.

English

Those who have the knowledge of the complete ocean-like fullness do not fall into the duality of the seer and the seen.

acalā iva nirvātā dīpā iva samatviṣaḥ | sācārā vā nirācārāstiṣṭhanti svasthameva te || 14 ||

English

Those who are steadfast, like a lamp without wind, remain calm and composed whether they follow rituals or not.

āpūrṇaikārṇavaprakhyā kāpyantaḥ pūrṇatoditā | antaḥśītalatā jñaptirjñasyāpūrvaiva lakṣyate || 15 ||

English

The knowledge of the complete ocean-like fullness is experienced as inner coolness and is perceived as unprecedented.

vāsanaiveha puruṣaḥ prekṣitā sā na vidyate | tāṃ ca na prekṣate kaścit tataḥ saṃsāra āgataḥ || 16 ||

English

Here, the person is seen as desire, but that does not exist. No one sees it, hence the worldly existence has come.

anālokanasiddhaṃ yattadālokānna vidyate | kṛṣṇādyanupalambho'tra dṛṣṭāntaḥ spaṣṭaceṣṭitaḥ || 17 ||

English

That which is established without perception does not exist through perception. The example here is the non-perception of Krishna, which is clearly demonstrated.

bhūtāni dehamāṃsādi taccāsadvibhramo jaḍaḥ | buddhyahaṃkāracetāṃsi tanmayānyeva netarat || 18 ||

English

The elements such as the body and flesh are an illusion of non-existence and are inert. The intellect, ego, and consciousness are only made of that, nothing else.

bhūtādimayatāṃ tyaktvā buddhyahaṃkāracetasām | atyantaṃ sthitirabhyeti yadi tanmuktatoditā || 19 ||

English

By abandoning the nature of the elements such as the body, the intellect, ego, and consciousness attain the ultimate state, if that is said to be liberated.

cicchliṣṭā cetynaniṣṭhatvāttādṛśyevātra kāstitā | tasmātkeva kutaḥ kutra vāsanā kiṃsvarūpiṇī || 20 ||

English

Being pervaded by consciousness, there is no independent existence here. Therefore, where and from where does desire arise in what form?

yasya caiṣa bhramaḥ so'sanprekṣayāsanna lakṣyate | mṛgatṛṣṇāmbuvatten saṃsāraḥ kasya kaḥ kutaḥ || 21 ||

English

One who is deluded in this way is not perceived by direct observation, just as the mirage water is not real. The worldly existence is an illusion, so who is it for and from where does it come?

tadevaṃ tarhi tasya syāditi cittodayo hi yaḥ | punaḥ sa eva saṃsāravibhramaḥ saṃpravartate || 22 ||

English

Thus, the rise of the mind (cittodaya) in the form of 'it should be so' is itself the delusion of worldly existence (samsara). This delusion continues to arise again and again.

tasmātsarvamanāśritya vyomavatsamupāsyatām | apunaḥsmaraṇaṃ śreya iha vismaraṇaṃ param || 23 ||

English

Therefore, abandoning all supports, one should meditate like the sky. Here, non-remembrance is better; forgetfulness is supreme.

neha draṣṭā na bhoktāsti nā'stitā na ca nāstitā | yathāsthitamidaṃ śāntamekaṃ spandi sadābdhivat || 24 ||

English

Here, there is no seer, no enjoyer, no existence, nor non-existence. This is calm and steady, one, pulsating like the ocean forever.

sarvaṃ dṛśyaṃ jagadbrahma sadityavagate sphuṭam | jalaśoṣādivodeti bimbabimbikṣaye śivam || 25 ||

English

When it is clearly understood that the entire visible world is Brahman, it shines forth like the reflection in water when the water dries up, revealing the pure Shiva.

śāntatāvyavahāro vā rāgadveṣavivarjitaḥ | viśrāntasya pare tattve dṛśyate samadarśinaḥ || 26 ||

English

Or, the behavior of tranquility, devoid of attachment and aversion, is seen in one who is rested in the supreme reality and sees everything equally.

athavā śāntataivāsya nirvāṇasyāvaśiṣyate | nirvāsanaḥ kila muniḥ kathaṃ vyavaharatvasau || 27 ||

English

Or, only tranquility remains of this liberation. How can the sage, who is without abode, behave in this way?

yāvattvasyana nirvāṇaṃ paripoṣamupāgatam | tāvadvyavaharatyastarāgadveṣabhayodayaḥ || 28 ||

English

Until this liberation attains complete maturity, one behaves with the rise of attachment, aversion, and fear.

vītarāgabhayakrodho nirvāṇaḥ śāntamānasaḥ | śilevāpyaśilībhūto munisttiṣṭhati nityaśaḥ || 29 ||

English

Free from attachment, fear, and anger, the liberated one with a tranquil mind stands firm like a stone, always.

kośe'sti padmabījasya yathā sarvābjinī tathā | ananyā svapnavibhrāntirātmanysti na bāhyatā || 30 ||

English

Just as the potential of all flowers is in the seed of the lotus, similarly, the unique dream-like illusion is in the self, not outside.

bāhyatābhāvanādbāhyamātmaivātmatvabhāvanāt | bhavatīdaṃ pare tattve bhāvanaṃ tattadeva hi || 31 ||

English

Due to the absence of external perception, the external world is perceived as the Self due to the perception of the Self. In the ultimate reality, this perception is indeed that.

yāntaḥ svapnādivibhrāntiḥ saiveyaṃ bāhyatoditā | manāgapyanyatā nātra dvibhāṇḍapayasoriva || 32 ||

English

The confusion that arises within, such as in dreams, is the same as that which is perceived externally. There is no difference here, just as there is no difference between the water in two pots.

sthairyāsthairye tathaivātra bhrāntimātramaye tate | ādhārādheyate te dve yathā jalataraṅgate || 33 ||

English

In the same way, in the fluctuating and non-fluctuating states, there is only illusion here. The support and the supported are like the waves of water.

svapnādāvātmano'nyatvajñānādanyatvavedanam | ananyatāvabodhe tu tadananyanna codayi || 34 ||

English

From the knowledge of the otherness of the Self in dreams, etc., arises the perception of otherness. However, when there is a realization of non-otherness, that otherness does not arise.

kalanārahitam śāntam yadrūpam paramātmanaḥ | bhavatyaasau tattadbhāvādatadbhāvānna tadbhavet || 35 ||

English

The form of the Supreme Self, which is devoid of parts and is peaceful, becomes that due to the state of that. Without that state, it would not be that.

svapnādijñānasaṃśāntau yadrūpaṃ śuddhamaīśvaram | na tadasti na tannāsti na vāggocaramēva tat || 36 ||

English

In the cessation of dream-like knowledge, that pure divine form neither exists nor does not exist, nor is it expressible by words.

ātyantikabhrāntilayē yukta ēvāvagacchati | svarūpaṃ nōpadēśasya viṣayō viduṣō hi tat || 37 ||

English

One who is engaged in the ultimate dissolution of delusion truly understands the true nature, which is not the subject of instruction for the wise.

śāntaṃ nirastabhayamānaviṣādalobhamohātmadehamananendriyacittajāḍyam | tyaktvāhamakṣayamapāstasamastabhedaṃ nirvāṇamēkamajamāsitumēva yuktam || 38 ||

English

Having abandoned fear, grief, desire, delusion, ego, body, mind, and the dullness of the senses, one should strive to attain the eternal, indivisible, and singular state of Nirvana.
