śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | nirvāṇo bhava śāntātmā yathāprāptānuvṛttimān | sann evāsatsamaḥ saumya sphaṭikādiva nirmitaḥ || 1 ||

English

Shri Vasistha said: Be liberated, be peaceful, and act according to what comes naturally to you. Be indifferent to existence and non-existence, O gentle one, like a crystal.

ekasmineva sarvasmin saṃsthite vitatātmani | naikasminn a ca sarvasminnānātākalanā kutaḥ || 2 ||

English

When everything is situated in the one pervading Self, how can there be diversity in the one or in everything?

ādyantarahitaṃ sarvaṃ vyoma cittatattvanirbharam | śarīrotpattināśeṣu kā cittatvasya khaṇḍanā || 3 ||

English

Everything is devoid of beginning and end, filled with the essence of consciousness like space. What is the destruction of the essence of consciousness in the birth and death of the body?

sphuranti hi jaḍakrīḍāściccamatkāracāpalāt | acāpalātpratīyante taraṅgā iva vāriṇi || 4 ||

English

The play of the inert indeed appears due to the restlessness of the wonder of consciousness. Due to the lack of restlessness, they appear like waves in water.

yathā śubhrāmbude vastrasaṅkā na phalabhāginī | deho'yamahamityeṣā tathā śaṅkā na vāstavī || 5 ||

English

Just as the suspicion of a cloth in a white cloud does not yield any result, similarly, the suspicion 'I am this body' is not real.

māvasthuni nimagnastvaṃ bhava bhūribhavaprade | vastvanantasukhāyādyaṃ bhavyaṃ bhāvaya bhūtaye || 6 ||

English

May you be immersed in the ultimate reality, the giver of abundant prosperity. Contemplate the auspicious and blissful essence of reality for the welfare of all beings.

cidvyomānantamevāsminnneyattāsti samātmanaḥ | ityeva paramaṃ vastu vastu tatparamastu te || 7 ||

English

In this infinite consciousness, the essence of the self exists. Thus, the supreme reality is indeed the ultimate truth for you.

evaṃ niścayavānnāma tvamevāsi nirañjanaḥ | dhyātā dhyeyaṃ tathā dhyānaṃ satyaṃ cāpi na kiṃcana || 8 ||

English

Thus, you are indeed the one with firm resolve, pure and untainted. You are the meditator, the object of meditation, the act of meditation, and the truth, yet nothing specific.

draṣṭā dṛśyaṃ darśanaṃ ca cit eva vibhūtayaḥ | atattatsaṃvido nānyadadhyānaṃ dhyeyamasti ca || 9 ||

English

The seer, the seen, and the act of seeing are all manifestations of pure consciousness. There is no meditation or object of meditation other than the awareness of that reality.

udyati pratipaccandre vahati pralayānile | ātmatattvaṃ samaṃ saumyaṃ na kṣubhyati na śāmyati || 10 ||

English

It rises with the waxing moon and flows with the wind of dissolution. The essence of the self is calm and gentle, neither agitated nor pacified.

yathā nauyāyinaḥ sthāṇutaruśailādivapanam | yathā śuktau rajatadhīstathā dehādi cetasaḥ || 11 ||

English

Just as a sailor sees a tree or a mountain as a moving object, and just as one sees silver in a shell, so does the mind see the body and other objects.

yathā dehādi cittasya tathā dehasya cittakam | tathaiva jīvaḥ parame pade dvaitamataḥ kutaḥ || 12 ||

English

Just as the body and other objects are in the mind, so is the mind in the body. Therefore, how can there be duality in the supreme state for the individual self?

sarvamekamidaṃ śāntaṃ brahma bṛṃhitavedanāt | na kiṃcijjagadādyasti bhrāntiranyā na vidyate || 13 ||

English

All this is one, peaceful Brahman, known from the expansion of knowledge. Nothing else exists in the world; there is no other delusion.

na vidyate yathā vyomni vanaṃ snehaśca saikate | vidyucchaśāṅkabimbe ca tathā dehādi cetasi || 14 ||

English

Just as there is no forest in the sky, no moisture in sand, and no reflection in the moon's disc, so there is no body and other objects in the mind.

avidyamāna evāsmiṃ mā bibhīhi jagadbhame | etadeva paraṃ satyaṃ viddhi satyavidāṃ vara || 15 ||

English

Do not fear this non-existent worldly illusion. Know this alone to be the supreme truth, O best among the knowers of truth.

jagadasti na satteti yāsīdbrāntistavādya sā| śāntā madupadeśena kimanyadbandhakāraṇam || 16 ||

English

The delusion that the world exists or does not exist has now been dispelled by my teachings. What other cause is there for bondage?

sthālyudañcanakumbhādi yathā mṛnmātrakaṃ tathā| cittamātraṃ jagadidaṃ kṣīṇaṃ tacca vicāraṇāt || 17 ||

English

Just as pots, jars, and other clay objects are merely clay, so too is this world merely the mind. This is understood through inquiry.

āpatsu saṃpatsu bhavābhaveṣu śāntaiṣaṇāharṣaviṣādasamvit| saumyādahaṃbhāvavidā vimukto yathāsthitaṃ tiṣṭha vilīya māsva || 18 ||

English

In adversity and prosperity, in existence and non-existence, remain calm, free from desire, joy, and sorrow. Knowing the self, be liberated and abide as you are, without dissolving.

yathāsthitaṃ vastvadhigamya rāma sthito'si cedvā svakulāmbarendo| taddharṣaśokaiṣaṇadūṣaṇādi vimucya vā tiṣṭha yathecchamāsva || 19 ||

English

O Rama, having realized the truth as it is, whether you remain in your royal attire or not, be free from joy, sorrow, desire, and faults. Abide as you wish.
