śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | saṃvedanaṃ bhāvanaṃ ca vāsanā kalaneti ca | anarthāyeha śabdārthe vigatārtho vijṛmbhate || 1 ||

English

Shri Vasishtha said: Perception, imagination, and the impressions of the mind are the causes of meaningless words and actions in this world.

vedanaṃ bhāvanaṃ viddhi sarvadoṣasamāśrayam | tasminnevāpadaḥ santi latā madhurase yathā || 2 ||

English

Know that perception and imagination are the abode of all faults. Just as a creeper finds support in a sweet tree, so do calamities reside in them.

saṃsāramārge gahane vāsanāveśavāhinaḥ | upayāti vicitraughairvṛttavṛttāntasaṃtatiḥ || 3 ||

English

In the deep path of worldly existence, those who are carried away by mental impressions encounter a continuous series of strange events and behaviors.

vivekino vāsanayā saha saṃsārasaṃbhamaḥ | kṣīyate mādhavasyānte śanairiva dharārasaḥ || 4 ||

English

For the wise, the confusion of worldly existence along with mental impressions gradually diminishes, like the earth's moisture at the end of the rainy season.

asyāḥ saṃsārasallakyā vāsanotseḍhakāriṇī | kadalyā vanajālinyā rasalekheva mādhavī || 5 ||

English

The impressions that cause the growth of worldly existence are like the sap of a banana tree in a dense forest, which is sweet but ultimately leads to decay.

saṃsārāndhyatayodeti vāsanātmā rasaścitauyathā vanatayā tasthau madhumāsarasaḥ kṣitau || 6 ||

English

In the twilight of worldly existence, the essence of desire arises, just as the sweetness of honey remains in the forest. The mind, filled with the taste of desires, stands on the earth.

cinmātrādamalācchūnyādṛte kiṃcinna vidyatenānyatkiṃcidaparyante khe śūnyatvetaradyathā || 7 ||

English

Except for the pure consciousness which is free from impurities, nothing else exists. In the ultimate void, there is nothing but emptiness, just as it is.

vedanātmā na so'styanya iti yā pratibhā sthirāeṣā'vidyā bhramastveṣa sa ca saṃsāra ātataḥ || 8 ||

English

The firm conviction that there is no other reality except the essence of sensation is ignorance. This ignorance is delusion, and this delusion is the worldly existence.

anālokanasaṃsiddha ālokenaiva naśyatiasadātmā sadābhāso bālavetālavatkṣaṇāt || 9 ||

English

That which is established without perception is destroyed by perception itself. The unreal appears real, like a child's ghost, vanishing in an instant.

sarvadṛśyadṛśo bādhe bodhasāratayaikatāmyāntyaśeṣamahīpīṭhasaritpūrā ivārṇave || 10 ||

English

When the seer of all that is seen is obstructed, the essence of knowledge becomes one with the ultimate reality, like the fullness of the ocean when all rivers merge into it.

mṛnmayam tu yathā bhāṇḍaṁ mṛcchūnyaṁ nopalabhyate | cinmayāditayā cetyaṁ cicchūnyaṁ nopalabhyate || 11 ||

English

Just as a clay pot cannot be found without clay, the consciousness cannot be found without the self.

bodhāvabuddhaṁ yadvastu boddhyakarketeyate | nābodhaṁ budhyate bodho vairūpyādinānyatā || 12 ||

English

That which is non-existent in knowledge is considered unknowable. Knowledge is not known through ignorance, due to the difference in nature.

draṣṭṛdarśanadṛśyeṣu pratyekaṁ bodhamātratā | sārastena tadanyatvaṁ nāsti kiñcitkhapuṣpavat || 13 ||

English

In the seer, the seen, and the act of seeing, there is only the essence of knowledge. Therefore, there is no difference, just like a flower in the sky.

sajātīyaḥ sajātīyenaikatāmanugacchati | anyonyānubhavastena bhavatvekatvanishcayaḥ || 14 ||

English

The similar attains unity with the similar. Through mutual experience, the certainty of oneness arises.

yadi kāṣṭhoplādīnāṁ na bhavedbodharūpatā | tatsadānupalambhaḥ syādetetāmamastāmiva || 15 ||

English

If objects like wood and stone did not have the nature of knowledge, they would always be perceived as non-existent.

yadā tveṣā nu dṛśyaśrīrbodhamātraikarūpiṇī | tadānyevāpyananyeva satī bodhena bodhyate || 16 ||

English

When this visible beauty is only of the form of pure consciousness, then, being non-different, it is known by consciousness itself.

sarvaṃ jagadgataṃ dṛśyaṃ bodhamātramidaṃ tatam | spandamātraṃ yathā vāyurjalamātraṃ yathārṇavaḥ || 17 ||

English

The entire world is visible and permeated by pure consciousness, just as motion is permeated by air and water by the ocean.

miśrībhūtā api hyete jatukāṣṭhādayo yathā | mitho'nanubhave miśrā aikyaṃ hyanubhave mithaḥ || 18 ||

English

Even though these things like lac and wood are mixed, they do not experience each other; they experience unity only when mixed.

anyonyānubhavo hyaiykaṃ aikyaṃ tvanyonyavedanam | yathāmbhasoḥ kṣīrayorvā na kāṣṭhajatunoriva || 19 ||

English

Mutual experience is unity, and unity is mutual experience, just as with water and milk, not like lac and wood.

ahamityeva bandhāya nāhamityeva muktaye | etāvanmātrake bandhe svāyatte kimaśaktatā || 20 ||

English

The sense of 'I' leads to bondage, and the absence of 'I' leads to liberation. In this limited bondage, what is the power of self-dependence?

candradvayapratyayavanmṛgatṛṣṇāmbubuddhivat| kimanutthita evāyamasadevāhamutthitaḥ || 21 ||

English

Just as the illusion of two moons or the mirage of water is false, so too is the notion of 'I' that arises from ignorance.

mamedamiti bandhāya nāhamityeva muktaye| etāvanmātrake vastunyātmāyatte kimajñatā || 22 ||

English

The notion of 'mine' leads to bondage, while the realization of 'not I' leads to liberation. In this limited scope of reality, what is the ignorance that depends on the self?

yaḥ kuṇḍabadaranyāyo yā ghaṭākāśayoḥ sthitiḥ| sa saṃbandho'pi naivānyamaikeyaṃ hyanyonyavedanam || 23 ||

English

The relationship between a pot and the space within it is like that of a fruit and its peel. This relationship is not different from the unity of mutual awareness.

anyonyāvedanaṃ tvaikyaṃ bhāgaśo gatamapyalam| ajaḍaṃ vā jaḍaṃ vāpi naikaṃ rūpaṃ vimuñcati || 24 ||

English

Mutual awareness is unity, even when divided into parts. Whether it is inert or conscious, it does not abandon its form.

nājaḍaṃ jaḍatāmeti svabhāvā hyanapāyinaḥ| yaccājaḍaṃ jaḍaṃ dṛṣṭaṃ dvaiti tatrāsti naikatā || 25 ||

English

The inert does not become conscious, for their nature is unchanging. That which is seen as both inert and conscious is dualistic and lacks unity.

vāsanāveśavalitāḥ kuvikāraśatātmabhiḥ vrajantyadhodho dhāvantaṃ śilāḥ śailacyutā iva || 26 ||

English

Those who are driven by their desires and engage in various wrong actions fall down like stones falling from a mountain.

vyūḍhānāṃ vāsanāvātairnṛtṛṇānāmitastataḥ tānyāpatanti duḥkhāni tatra vaktuṃ na pāryate || 27 ||

English

Those who are entangled in their desires are blown away by the winds of their passions, and they experience various sufferings that cannot be fully described.

bhrāntvā bhṛśaṃ karatalāhatakandukābhaṃ lokāḥ patanti nirayeṣu rasena raktāḥ kleśena tatra parijarjaratāṃ prayātāḥ kālāntareṇa punaranyanibhā bhavanti || 28 ||

English

People, deluded and deeply attached to worldly pleasures, fall into various hells. They are consumed by their desires and suffer greatly, eventually becoming weak and worn out. Over time, they take on new forms.
