In some ancient era, this divine consciousness, which is the essence of the self and other principles, existed in the form of guru and disciple in the forest.
The disciple said, 'There is no existence of the non-existent, nor is there non-existence of the existent | How then does this existent thing disappear?'
gururuvāca | na vinaśyata evedaṃ tataḥ putra na vidyate | nāsato vidyate bhāvo nābhāvo vidyate sataḥ || 11 ||
The Guru said: This does not perish, therefore, O son, it does not exist | There is no existence of non-existence, nor is there non-existence of existence.
kva sthitaṃ mṛgatṛṣṇāmbu kva sthiro dvīnduvibhramaḥ | kva sthirā keśadṛgvyomni kva bhrāntyanubhavaḥ sthiraḥ || 13 ||
Where is the mirage water stable? Where is the stability in the illusion of the moon? Where is the stability in the vision of hair in the sky? Where is the stability in the experience of delusion?
The disciple said | What is this that appears, O Lord, and what is it that does not appear? Moreover, what is the form of this substance of the expanded consciousness? || 17 ||
The guru said | This is the pure space of consciousness, O son, which shines brightly | Whatever name it has, that is what appears as the world; there is no other world || 18 ||
The inherent form of this, which has creation and destruction as its nature, is both manifest and unmanifest | Its form, which is the nature of space, would be both bright and dark, like the form of a composite object || 20 ||
Just as in dream and deep sleep, there is only one eternal sleep, similarly, in this creation and dissolution, there is only one eternal Brahman, the imperishable consciousness.
There is nothing else in the sky known as space, thus we do not know it as such. This is inconceivable in the supreme sky, as it arises from our consciousness.
śiṣya uvāca | evaṃ cet tad yathā svapne draṣṭur anyaḥ sa dṛśyadhīḥ | vidyate tadvad anyatra manye asti jagadādidhīḥ || 26 ||
The disciple said: If it is so, then just as in a dream the seer is different from the seen, I think that the same applies to the world and the primordial consciousness.
gurur uvāca | evam etan mahāprājña svarūpaṃ tu na taj jagat | citi bhāti svarūpaṃ tat tadvad eva na bhāti ca || 27 ||
The guru said: O wise one, it is indeed so. The true nature is not this world. It shines in consciousness, but that true nature does not shine in the same way.
tatsat tatsarvadā sarvam asac cāsaddhi vākhilam | tanmayam tac cidākāśaṃ na nāśi na ca nāśi tat || 30 ||
That is the eternal truth, always and everywhere. It is both real and unreal, pervading everything. It is the essence of the pure space of consciousness, neither destroyed nor destructible.
That which is named as the eternal, conscious space, which takes the form of creation and dissolution, is known as suffering when not understood, but when understood, it is the supreme peace.
eṣa devo ghaṭaḥ śailaḥ paṭaḥ sphoṭastato vaṭaḥ| tṛṇamagniḥ sthāvaraṃ ca jaṅgamaṃ sarvameva ca || 33 ||
This divine being is the pot, the mountain, the cloth, the sound, the shore, the banyan tree, the grass, the fire, the immovable, the movable, and everything else.
asti nāsti ca śūnyaṃ ca kriyā kālo nabho mahī| bhāvābhāvau bhavo bhūtirnāśāḥ pāśāḥ śubhāśubhāḥ || 34 ||
There is existence and non-existence, emptiness, action, time, sky, earth, being and non-being, becoming, prosperity, destruction, bondage, auspiciousness, and inauspiciousness.
Grass is the doer, grass is the enjoyer, due to the identity with Brahman, grass is omnipresent | The pot is the doer, the pot is the enjoyer, the pot is the lord of all lords
The cloth is the doer, the cloth is the enjoyer, the cloth is the lord of all lords | The vision is the doer, the vision is the enjoyer, the vision is the lord of all lords
The mountain is the doer, the mountain is the enjoyer, the mountain is the lord of all lords | The man is the doer, the man is the enjoyer, the man is the lord of all lords
All perceptions, whether of injunction or prohibition, are preceded by intentions and experiences | They are always true in essence, but not true in reality | The form is as experienced here, hence the true nature
iti tvayā śiṣyatayā madantikācchrutaṃ purā tena na cāsi buddhvān | tato'nubhūyānyajagadbhavādbhavānihaādya jāto'si tadeva pṛcchasi || 48 ||
Thus, you have heard from me as a disciple long ago, but you have not understood | Therefore, experiencing other worldly affairs, you have been born again and are asking the same question
That knowledge is eternal and supreme, heard as the best, the reflection of the long night of worldly existence | Born with pure understanding, free from delusion, follow the path as you have come
Abide in that supreme self, of pure nature, which is the essence of all | Free from all objects, radiant, with a mind peaceful in nirvana, clad in the garment of the sky, govern the kingdom with dharma, free from desire
