śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | phale kṣayendubhārūpe prāpte dhyātṛśatairnabhaḥ | yathā na śatapūrṇendu tathedaṃ kathanaṃ śṛṇu || 1 ||

English

Shri Vasishtha said: Just as the full moon is not seen by hundreds of meditators when the moon is in its waning phase, similarly, listen to this narration.

candrabimbasya dhyātāraḥ prāptāḥ prāptavyasusthitāḥ | nedaṃ nabhastalaṃ prāptā na cemaṃ śaśinaṃ śritāḥ || 2 ||

English

The meditators on the moon's disc, having reached the state of attainment, are not in this sky, nor have they taken refuge in this moon.

kvevānyasaṃkalpapuramanyaḥ prāpnoti kathyatām | saṃkalpapuryāmarthāptistajjantāveva nāpare || 3 ||

English

Tell me, who else reaches another realm of imagination? The attainment of the goal is only for those born in the realm of imagination, not for others.

pṛthakpṛthaksvasaṃkalpasargakheṣveva te sthitāḥ | candrāstapanti tatraiva kalākṣayavivarjitāḥ || 4 ||

English

They are situated in their own separate realms of imagination. The moons shine there without any diminution of their phases.

viśeyamasminnevendāvini dhyātā niśākare | asminneva viśatyantarātmabuddhisukhojjiḥtaḥ || 5 ||

English

The meditator on the moon, being in this very moon, enters into it, devoid of inner consciousness, intellect, and happiness.

ahaminduṃ praviṣṭaḥ syāmindubimbasukhānvitaḥ | dhyāteti tādṛksukhabhāgbhvatīti viniścayaḥ || 6 ||

English

I have entered the moon and am endowed with the bliss of the moon's reflection. By meditating thus, one becomes endowed with such bliss, this is the firm conviction.

yathāyamanusaṃdhatte svabhāvaṃ saṃvidavyayā | taṃ tathaivānubhavati bhavecceddṛḍhaniścayaḥ || 7 ||

English

As one contemplates one's own nature with unwavering consciousness, one experiences it exactly thus if there is firm conviction.

yathendutvaṃ svasaṃkalpātsarvadhyātuḥ pṛthakpṛthak | bhātyevameva vanitālābhḥ kālpanikaḥ svataḥ || 8 ||

English

Just as the moon's reflection appears differently to each meditator according to their own resolve, so too the attainment of a beloved is purely imaginative.

yā dhyāne dhyātṛlakṣāṇāṃ sādhvī bhāryātvamāgatā | tatkalpanānubhavanaṃ teṣāṃ sattvātmani sthitam || 9 ||

English

She who is the object of meditation for the meditators has become a virtuous wife. Their experience of that imagination is established in their pure consciousness.

gṛhādanirgato jīvaḥ saptadvīpaparaḥ sthitaḥ | tasyāpi tatkālpanikaṃ rājyaṃ vyomni svamandire || 10 ||

English

The soul that has left the home is situated beyond the seven islands. Even for that soul, the imagined kingdom is in its own mansion in the sky.

samastaṃ kalpanāmātramidamādyajñajanmanaḥ | śūnyamapratighaṃ śāntaṃ teṣvapi syātkimanyathā || 11 ||

English

All this is merely imagination of the primordial sacrifice. It is void, non-resisting, and peaceful. What else could it be?

dānaurdhvadehikatapojapādīnāṃ paratra yat | amūrtānāṃ phalaṃ mūrtaṃ tadidaṃ kathyate śrṛṇu || 12 ||

English

The fruits of charity, austerities, and rituals performed in this life are tangible in the afterlife. Listen to this being explained.

dānādicihnitadhiyaḥ paratra svapnavatphalaṃ | paśyantyamūrtāmūrtābhamaṃ jaṃ cinmūrtikalpanāt || 13 ||

English

Those whose minds are marked by charity and other virtues see the results in the afterlife as if in a dream. They perceive the unmanifest as manifest through the power of consciousness.

vedanāvedanākārā spandāspandātma vai punaḥ | cinmātrasya asya tadbhāntiśāntau śāntātma nirmalam || 14 ||

English

The nature of pure consciousness is both with and without sensation, both moving and still. In the cessation of delusion, it is peaceful and pure.

cinmātrābhama ito dānādamutrāttamavāpnuyāt | saṃkalpātmeti kavayaḥ kathaṃ tannopalabhyate || 15 ||

English

From the perspective of pure consciousness, one attains the highest state through charity and other virtues. The wise say it is the nature of resolve. How is it not perceived?

kalpanātmani saṃsāre saṃkalpo'kṛtrimaṃ phalaṃ | cinmātramabhito'dānāddānādvā'stu yathoditaḥ || 16 ||

English

In this world, which is a product of imagination, the result of resolve is spontaneous. Whether it is given or not given, let it be as it is said.

etatte kathitaṃ sarvaṃ yathāpṛṣṭaṃ mahīpate | jagadapratighaṃ sarvamidaṃ cinmātrakalpanam || 17 ||

English

All this has been told to you, O king, as you have asked. This entire world is non-resistant, and it is all a creation of pure consciousness.

rājovāca | sargādau bhagavandehamidaṃ cinmātrakalpanam | kathaṃ bhāti kathaṃ kuḍyaṃ vinā dīpaḥ prakāśate || 18 ||

English

The king said: O Lord, how does this body, which is a creation of pure consciousness, appear at the beginning of creation? How does a wall shine without a lamp?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | tvayārtho dehaśabdasya yo buddhaḥ sa mahāmate | tattvajñaṃ prati nāstyeva śilānṛttamivāmbare || 19 ||

English

Vasishtha said: O wise one, the meaning you have understood of the word 'body' does not exist for the knower of truth, just as the dance of a stone does not exist in the sky.

ya eva brahmaśabdārtho dehaśabdārtha eva saḥ | nārthayoranayorbhedo vidyate'mbvambhasoriva || 20 ||

English

The meaning of the word 'Brahman' is the same as the meaning of the word 'body'. There is no difference between these two meanings, just as there is no difference between water and water.

yadeva brahmadeho'sau svapnābhaḥ svapna eṣa tu | tvadvodhāyocyate yuktirna tu tatsvapna eva tu || 21 ||

English

Whatever this body of Brahman is, it is like a dream, this is indeed a dream | For your awakening, reasoning is explained, not that it is merely a dream

svapnastavānubhūtārthastenātastvaṃ prabodhyase | na tu sarge cidābhāte sādṛśyaṃ svapnabhasmanā || 22 ||

English

The dream is the experienced reality, by that you are awakened | Not in creation, in the appearance of consciousness, similarity with the dream is not

kastatra nāma deho'yaṃ kasyaita svapnadhīḥ kva vā | svapnena jñāvabuddhena bhrameṇājño'vabodhyate || 23 ||

English

Who is this body there, whose are these dream thoughts, where indeed | By the dream, by the knowledge of the ignorant, the ignorant is awakened

tatra jāgrann na ca svapno na suṣuptaṃ na cetarat | kimapītthamidaṃ bhānaṃ khamātraṃ maunamomalam || 24 ||

English

There, neither wakefulness nor dream nor deep sleep nor anything else | What is this appearance here, merely space, silent, pure

abhātameva bhātīva yadadyetthamidaṃ tu tat | prāgvibhātaṃ tathātyacchaṃ jāgratsvapnādi no yathā || 25 ||

English

That which appears here now as if it is unreal, it is indeed that | Previously manifested, thus transcending, wakefulness, dream, etc., not like that

deśādddeśāntaraprāptau yanmadhye saṃvido vapuḥ| tanmayam sarvamevedam dvaitamadvaitameva ca || 26 ||

English

In the transition from one place to another, the form of consciousness in the middle is all this, both duality and non-duality.

anyatra cinmayam svapnam dvaitādvaitam śubhāśubham| nirāvaraṇacinmātranabhasaivopamīyate || 27 ||

English

Elsewhere, the dream of pure consciousness is both duality and non-duality, auspicious and inauspicious. It is compared to the pure, unobstructed sky of consciousness alone.

śūnyamarthopalambhaśca bhānam cābhānameva ca| dvaitamaikyamasatsacca sarvam cidgaganam param || 28 ||

English

Emptiness, the perception of objects, appearance and non-appearance, duality, unity, unreality, and reality—all are the supreme sky of consciousness.

pūrṇātpūrṇam prasarati pūrṇameva sthitam jagat| na ca bhātam nacaābhātam śilābaddhodaropamam || 29 ||

English

From the full, the full expands; the world is established as full. It neither appears nor disappears, like a stone within a belly.

yato jagaccidunmeṣo vyomātmāpratigham tataḥ| cinmātram yatra yatrāsti tatra tatrocitam jagat || 30 ||

English

From where the universe arises as pure consciousness, unobstructed like the sky. Wherever there is pure consciousness, there the universe is appropriate.

cidvyoma cāsti sarvatra sarvaṃ caitajjaganmayam | sarvaṃ brahmamayaṃ śāntaṃ jagadityapi śabditam || 31 ||

English

The consciousness-space exists everywhere, and everything is pervaded by this world. Everything is permeated by Brahman, peaceful, and is also called the world.

yathāsthitamidaṃ viśvaṃ tathāsaṃsthamanāmayam | brahmaiva niravadyātma citsaṃkalpapurākṛti || 32 ||

English

This universe is established as it is, flawless and without defects. Brahman alone is the pure, flawless self, the original form of consciousness.

asaṃbhavādanyayukteryuktireṣaiva śobhanā | ayuktyanubhavaṃ tūktaṃ nārthināmiha śobhate || 33 ||

English

From the impossibility of any other reasoning, this reasoning alone is beautiful. It is said that the experience of irrationality does not suit the seekers here.

loke śāstre'tha vedādau yatsiddhaṃ siddham eva tat | sadas tv asadvātmani taddhātuṃ śakyaṃ na vā kvacit || 34 ||

English

In the world, in the scriptures, and in the Vedas, whatever is established is indeed established. Whether it is real or unreal in the self, it cannot be removed anywhere.

tadevetthaṃ parijñātaṃ brahmatāmupagacchati | yadā tena samaṃ viśvaṃ sthitameva vilīyate || 35 ||

English

That alone, thus known, attains the state of Brahman. When the universe is established in it, it dissolves into it.

nyāyenaitadihoktena lokavedādi sidhyati | sarvaṃ sa jīvanmuktatvameṣa evocitastataḥ || 36 ||

English

By the logic stated here, the world, Vedas, and other things are established. All this is the state of liberation while living, and this alone is appropriate.

parijñātaṃ cidākāśamaparijñātapādape | so'haṃ trijagadityeva bandhamokṣavinirṇayaḥ || 37 ||

English

The known space of consciousness is in the unknowable foot. I am that, the three worlds, and the determination of bondage and liberation.

yathāsthitamidaṃ dṛśyaṃ parijñānādvilīyate | tajjñasyāstagatasyeva śilāmaunaṃ tu śiṣyate || 38 ||

English

As it is, this visible world dissolves through knowledge. The silence of the stone is taught to the one who has attained that knowledge.

loke śāstre ca vede ca yatsiddhaṃ siddhameva tat | saṃvedyate tadevātastadevaṃ phalati sphuṭam || 39 ||

English

Whatever is established in the world, scriptures, and Vedas is indeed established. That is perceived, and that alone clearly bears fruit.

sakalārthanirāsena yadyatsaṃvedyate ciram | tadeva prāpyate'vaśyaṃ sarvatraivānyabhāvitam || 40 ||

English

By the negation of all objects, whatever is perceived for a long time is certainly attained, being devoid of anything else everywhere.

yathānubhūtaṃ yattattattathā nāmānubhūyate tatsatyamastvaṃ vā yāvallābhaṃ tathā nu tat || 41 ||

English

Whatever is experienced as it is, is experienced as such. Whether it is true or false, it is so until it is realized.

itthaṃ mahāpraśnavicāraṇaṃ te mayedamuktaṃ matimanmahātman anena gacchāśu pathā nirādhirnirāmayo nirvyasano bhavoccaiḥ || 42 ||

English

Thus, this great inquiry has been explained to you, O wise one. By this, go quickly on the path free from obstacles, free from disease, free from distress, and be exalted.
