paśyeme pura uhyanta iva mandarameravaḥ arūḍhā api digvātaiḥ saridbimbitaśailavat || 2 ||

English

I see these cities being carried away like clouds by the winds, even though they are not mounted, like mountains reflected in rivers.

uparyuparyantarataḥ kadalīdalapīṭhavat śliṣṭāśliṣṭasvarūpāḥ khe mithaḥ saṃsṛtayaḥ sthitāḥ || 3 ||

English

One after another, intertwined like the layers of a banana leaf, these forms are interconnected and exist in the sky.

śrīrāma uvāca paśya me pura uhyanta iti vākyārthamakṣatam na kiñcidavagacchāmi yathāvanmunināyaka || 4 ||

English

Śrī Rāma said: I do not understand the complete meaning of the statement 'I see these cities being carried away.' Please explain it to me, O leader of sages.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca prāṇasyābhyantare cittaṃ cittasyābhyantare jagat vidyate viviḍhākāraṃ bījasyāntariva drumaḥ || 5 ||

English

Śrī Vasistha said: Within the breath is the mind, within the mind is the world. The world exists in various forms, like a tree within a seed.

mṛte puṃsi nabhovātairmilanti prāṇavāyavaḥ | sarijjalairivāmbhodhijalānyātmadhutāni hi || 6 ||

English

When a person dies, the vital airs merge with the winds of the sky, just as the waters of a river merge with the waters of the ocean, which are swiftly moving.

itaścetśca yāntīva teṣāmantarjagantyalam | vyomavātavinunnānāṃ saṃkalpaikātmakānyapi || 7 ||

English

They seem to move here and there, but they actually enter within, being driven by the winds of the sky, even though they are of the nature of a single resolve.

saprāṇavātaiḥ pavanaiḥ sphuratsaṃkalpagarbhitaiḥ | sarvā eva diśaḥ pūrṇāḥ paśyāmīmāḥ samantataḥ || 8 ||

English

With the winds full of vibrant resolves and vital airs, I see all directions filled everywhere.

atraite paśya paśyāmi saṃkalpajagatāṅgaṇe | buddhidṛṣṭyā samuhyante puro mandarameravaḥ || 9 ||

English

Here, look, I see in the arena of the world of resolves, by the vision of intelligence, the Mandara mountains rise up before.

khavāte'ntarmṛtaprāṇāḥ prāṇānāmantare manaḥ | manaso'ntarjagadviddhi tile tailamiva sthitam || 10 ||

English

Know that within the winds of the sky, the vital airs are dead, within the vital airs is the mind, and within the mind is the world, just as oil is contained in a sesame seed.

khvātaiḥ khasamāḥ prāṇā yathohyante manomayāḥ | uhyante vai tathaitāni tadaṅgāni jagantyapi || 11 ||

English

Just as the vital breaths, which are of the nature of the mind, are restrained by the sky, so also these limbs of the universe are restrained.

sabhūtānyambarorvyādivṛndāni trijagantyapi | uhyante cāpyarūḍhāni puraḥ sarvatra gandhavat || 12 ||

English

All beings, including the sky, earth, and other elements, in all three worlds, are restrained and pervade everywhere like fragrance.

tāni buddhyāiva dṛśyante na dṛṣṭyā raghunandana | puraḥ saṅkalparūpāṇi svasvapnapurapūravat || 13 ||

English

Those are seen only by the intellect, not by the eyes, O Raghunandana. They are like one's own dream city, having the form of thoughts.

sarvatra sarvadā santi susūkṣmāṇyeva khādapi | kalpanāmātrasāratvānna cohyante manāgapi || 14 ||

English

They exist everywhere and always, being very subtle, even in the sky. Due to their essence being mere imagination, they are not restrained even by the mind.

tānyeva dṛḍhabhāvatvātsveṣu lokeṣu teṣvalam | satyānyeva cidaṃśasya sarvagatvādbhavāniv || 15 ||

English

Those very elements, due to their firm existence in their respective worlds, appear as real, being parts of consciousness, due to their omnipresence.

pratibimbaṃ purāṇīva puraḥprāṇasaridraye | arūḍhānyapi cohyante rūḍhānyapi ca naiva ca || 16 ||

English

Just as the reflection of an ancient city appears in the river of life, so too do unrealized desires manifest, while realized ones do not.

saurabhāṇi samuhyante vātāṅgasthāni rāghava | jaganti prāṇasaṃsthāni vyomātmakamayāni tu || 17 ||

English

Fragrances gather in the realm of the wind, O Raghava. The worlds are established in the realm of life, which is of the nature of space.

kumbhe deśāntaraṃ nīte yathāntarvyonni nānyatā | spandanādimaye citte tathaiva trijagadbhra || 18 ||

English

Just as the space within a pot remains unchanged when the pot is moved to another place, so too the three worlds appear unchanged in the mind that is full of vibrations.

English

Thus, the illusion of the world is not real, it is merely an appearance. It neither perishes nor arises, it is purely of the nature of Brahman.

yadi vāpyudite vātaistattadasyā na lakṣyate | tadantaḥsaṃsthitaiḥ spando nāvi kośagatairi || 20 ||

English

Even if it appears to arise due to the winds, it is not perceived as such. The vibration is within, not in the outer sheath, just like the vibration in a musical instrument.

yathā spando'ṅgalagnāyāṃ nāvyantaḥsaṃsthitairapi | na lakṣyate tathā pṛthvyāṃ tatsaṃsthais tanmayairapi || 21 ||

English

Just as the vibration in a boat is not perceived by those seated inside, similarly, the vibrations of the earth are not perceived by those who are one with it.

yathā yojanavistīrṇaṃ laghau sadmānubhūyate | yattasya pādapastambhe paramāṇau yathā jagat || 22 ||

English

Just as a small house is experienced as vast as a yojana, so is the universe in a tiny atom.

vastvalpamapyativṛhallaghusattvo hi manyate | mūṣikāḥ svāñjalidravyaṃ navapaṅkamivārbhakāḥ || 23 ||

English

Even a small object is considered very large by a small being. Mice consider their nest material as fresh mud.

asatyeva svarūpe'smiñjagadākhye vidobhrame | lokāntarādharmamayī sā bṛṃhagasya bhāvanā || 24 ||

English

In this world, which is essentially unreal, the learned are deluded. That imagination of the wise is filled with the characteristics of other worlds.

idaṃ heyamupādeyamidaṃityantarajñatā | yasya tasya bhavāyāsti sarvajñasyāpi mūḍhatā || 25 ||

English

The knowledge of what is to be accepted and what is to be rejected leads to bondage. Even the omniscient one is deluded by this.

Even the omniscient one is deluded by this.

26

sacetano hyavayavī cetatyavayavānyathā | svāntareva tataṃ jīvastrijagadbudhyate tathā || 26 ||

English

The conscious entity perceives the parts differently, as the individual soul perceives the three worlds within itself.

saṃvidātmaparākāśamanantamajamavyayam | vyomno'vayavarūpāṇi tasyemāni jaganti bhoḥ || 27 ||

English

The supreme consciousness is infinite, unborn, and imperishable. All these worlds are parts of that infinite space.

sacetano'yaḥpiṇḍo'ntaḥ kṣurasūcyādikaṃ yathā | buddhyate buddhyate tadvajjīvo'jñastrijagadbhramam || 28 ||

English

Just as a lump of iron within perceives sharp objects like a razor, so does the ignorant individual soul perceive the illusion of the three worlds.

aciccividvāpi mṛtpiṇḍaḥ śarāvodañcanādikam | yathāṅga manute jīvastathāṅga manute jagat || 29 ||

English

Just as a lump of clay perceives various forms like pots and bowls, so does the individual soul perceive the world.

cidacidvāṅkuro dehe vṛkṣatvaṃ manyate yathā | vṛkṣaśabdārtharahitaṃ brahmedaṃ trijagattathā || 30 ||

English

Just as a sprout in the body perceives itself as a tree, so does this Brahman, devoid of the meaning of the word 'tree,' perceive the three worlds.

cidvācidvā yathādarśo bimbitaṃ vāpyabimbitam | nagaraṃ vetti no vāpi tathā brahma jagattrayam || 31 ||

English

Just as a mirror reflects an image, whether it is reflected or not, it is aware of the city or not, similarly, Brahma is aware of the three worlds.

deśakālakriyādravyamātrameva jagattrayam | ahaṃtvajagatostena bhedo nāstyetadātmanoḥ || 32 ||

English

The three worlds are merely space, time, action, and substance. There is no difference between the self and the world due to the ego.

kalpitena upamānena yadetadupadiśyate | tatropamaikeśena upameyasadharmatā || 33 ||

English

What is taught through an imagined analogy is only a partial similarity to the object of comparison.

yadidaṃ dṛśyate kiñcijjagatsthāvarajaṅgamam | amuñcataḥ parāṇutvaṃ jīvasyaitatsmṛtaṃ vapuḥ || 34 ||

English

Whatever is seen in the world, whether it is moving or stationary, is considered to be the form of the individual soul, which is the smallest particle.

sarvasaṃvedanatyāge śuddhasaṃspandade pade | na manāgapi bhedo'sti niḥsaṅgopalakośavat || 35 ||

English

In the state of pure vibration, where all sensations are abandoned, there is no difference, just like a stainless crystal.

yo yo nāma vikalpāṃśo yatra yatra yathā yathā | yadā yadā yena yena dīyate sa tathaiva cit || 36 ||

English

Whatever name or form is given, wherever and however it is given, at whatever time and by whatever means it is given, it is perceived accordingly.

acittvānnāsti manasi saṃkalpaḥ kha ivāṅkuraḥ | cittvāttu cetaso viddhi citireveha kalpanam || 37 ||

English

Without consciousness, there is no intention in the mind, like a seed without potential. Know that the creation of the mind is indeed consciousness.

yā yodeti vikalpaśrīraprabuddhāśayaṃ prati | sarvagatvādanantatvāccidvyomnaḥ sā na sanmayī || 38 ||

English

The splendor of diversity that arises in the unawakened mind, due to the omnipresence and infinitude of the consciousness, is not real.

yathodeti vikalpaśrīḥ prabuddhe noditaiva sā | sarvagatvādanantatvāccidvyomnaḥ sā na sanmayī || 39 ||

English

The splendor of diversity that arises in the awakened mind is not perceived as real, due to the omnipresence and infinitude of the consciousness.

sarvasaṃkalpakalanā satyetyābālamakṣatam | svapnādāvanubhūto'ntararthaḥ kenāpi labhyate || 40 ||

English

All mental constructs are considered true from childhood, but the inner meaning experienced in dreams and so on is attained by someone.

saṃkalpo vāsanā jīvastrayo'rthā likhitāścitā | sonubhūto'pyasatyaḥ syādasattvasyaiva no sataḥ || 41 ||

English

Desire, longing, and life are the three purposes written and perceived. Even if experienced, it is unreal, belonging to the unreal, not to the real.

asatyatābhidhaṃ satyaṃ mukta eva bhavecchivaḥ | sātivāhikadehaikaparikṣayavikāsavān || 42 ||

English

The truth that is called unreal is indeed liberated and becomes Shiva. It is the sole body that decays and flourishes.

jaganti vātairuhyante vyomni śālmalitūlavat | nohyante copalānīva na ca santyeva kalpanāt || 43 ||

English

The worlds are lifted by the winds in the sky like cotton tufts. They are not lifted like stones, nor do they exist merely by imagination.

ityasminnakhilapadārthasārthakośe vyomanyapyativitate jaganti santi | anyonyaṃ parimilitāni kānicicca nānyonyaṃ parimilitāni kānicicca || 44 ||

English

Thus, in this comprehensive collection of all meanings and objects, even in the vast sky, worlds exist. Some are intertwined with each other, and some are not intertwined with each other.
