Vasishtha said: The primary cause of bodily consciousness is the space of consciousness, which is like a dream. Since there is no other reality, how can there be a body in the space of consciousness?
sargādau svapnasavittirūpaṃ sarvaṃ vinānagh | na sargo na paro loko dṛśyamāno'pi siddhyati || 2 ||
At the beginning of creation, everything is in the form of dream-like consciousness, O sinless one. Neither creation nor the other world exists, even though it appears to be so.
Thus, this world appears to be unreal, just like the experience of a dream. The space of consciousness is peaceful and alone, like the detachment from a dream.
Thus, there is a name for the eternal and pure element of consciousness, which is beginningless and endless. It appears as the world, even though it is essentially void and pure.
That which is pure experience is the same as the dream state. The world is that same experience at the beginning of creation. How does the origin of the earth and other elements occur?
The reflection of the self in the sky of consciousness creates the form of creation. Thus, the calculation of the earth and other elements, as well as the mind and intellect, is made.
Afterwards, by that very self, which is the praise of its own sovereignty, the conception of the intellect and the earth and other elements is made, both real and unreal.
na ca kiṃcana nāmāṅga kacatyacchai va sā smṛtā | cinmātraikai kakala naṃ tatamevātmanātmani || 11 ||
There is nothing that is not pure consciousness; it is remembered as the ultimate reality | The individual self is a mere reflection of the supreme self
The space of consciousness is within the space of consciousness; this body is pure | The mind appears as if it is seen, just as in a dream it is situated
Like a dream, it is without attributes, and even without effort, it does not differ | Therefore, the space of consciousness is the space of consciousness, emptiness like the sky
This entire universe seems to expand, and that is indeed the nature of space | It appears to take the form of the world, both changing and unchanging.
In that which is devoid of earth and other elements, without the organs of the heart and mind | Another three worlds appear, just like formless in a dream.
Just as whirlpools and waves are created in water by the wind without any intention, so too are the mind, intellect, and other insentient entities created by Brahman.
cidvyoma brahmacinmātramātmā citi mahāniti | paramātmā iti paryāyā jñeyā jñānavatāṃ vara || 29 ||
The terms 'consciousness-space,' 'Brahman,' 'pure consciousness,' 'Self,' 'great,' and 'Supreme Self' are synonymous and should be understood by the wise.
Brahman is the essence of both opening and closing, like the vibration and stillness of the wind. Just as the closing of the eyes is, so is the opening of the eyes in the world.
The manifestation of the visible is the opening of the eyes, and the absence of the visible is the closing of the eyes. This one is formless, due to the destruction of both.
The nature of both the closing and opening of the eyes is considered the same ultimate reality. Therefore, the visible exists and does not exist, both real and unreal, always in consciousness.
The closing of the eyes is not different from the opening, and the opening is not different from the closing. Brahman, the creator of the universe, is of the nature of both closing and opening.
In deep sleep, it appears as a dream. It shines as Brahman, the creator of all, one, auspicious, peaceful, not many, yet it appears to be many.
This world, which is beginningless and endless, is a manifestation of the self | Brahman, the sole, dense, and tranquil, stands like a pillar on the path || 48 ||
Just as hair, nails, etc., in the sky appear as if they have duality, being existent and non-existent | Similarly, the higher intelligence, etc., appear to have duality || 50 ||
Just as in deep sleep, the dream state arises from the one self, similarly, in the state of creation, there is neither duality nor singularity in Brahman.
Like a dream, it is without attributes and does not differ even slightly | Even in modifications, it has the same nature as the conscious sky of reality
Therefore, leaving aside this triad, the appearance of Brahman-consciousness is seen by the wise due to its similarity to the seen object, remembered, etc.
śāstrasyāsya tu yannāma vādanaṃ tadvināparaḥ | abhyāso dṛśyasaṃśāntyai na bhūto na bhaviṣyati || 68 ||
The name of this scripture is 'Vadana.' Without it, there is no other practice for the pacification of the visible world; it has not been and will not be.
The mind, neither alive nor dead, does not attain cessation in the cycle of existence. Due to its inseparable association with the body, it does not perceive the truth.
The cause of this is foolishness, and that is understood from the scriptures. The wise, who are well-versed in the scriptures, can pacify it through reasoning.
Therefore, one should ponder over this great scripture according to one's ability. By understanding even a part or two parts, one can attain the end of suffering.
anubhūtamapi ca no sadṛśyamidaṃ draṣṭṛsahitamapi svapnanijamaraṇabāndhavarodanamiva sadiva kacitamapi || 79 ||
Even what is experienced does not resemble this. Even when witnessed, it is like the weeping over relatives in a dream—real while it lasts, yet ultimately unreal.
