bhāsa uvāca | athāhaṃ taṃ mahādevaṃ pāvakaṃ pṛṣṭavānidam | śukapakṣatikoṇasthaḥ bhūyatāmavanīśvara || 1 ||
Bhāsa said: Then I asked that great Lord, the purifier, the fire, this question: May you, the lord of the earth, be in the corner of the parrot's wing.
bhagavansarvayajñeśa svāhādhipa hutāśana | kimidaṃ nāma sampannaṃ kathyatāṃ kimidaṃ śavam || 2 ||
O Lord of all sacrifices, master of Svāhā, fire-eater, what is this that has been accomplished? Tell me, what is this corpse?
vahniruvāca | śrūyatāmakhilaṃ rājanyathāvadvṛṇayāmi te | trailokyabhāsurānantśavavṛttāntamakṣatam || 3 ||
Fire said: Listen, O king, I will describe to you accurately the entire story of the endless corpse that illuminates the three worlds.
asty anantamanākāraṃ paramaṃ vyoma cinmayaṃ | yatre mānyapasaṃkhyāni jaganti paramāṇavaḥ || 4 ||
There exists an infinite, formless, supreme, and consciousness-filled sky, in which countless worlds exist as particles.
śuddhacinmātranabhasi tasmin sarvagate kvacit | sarvātmanyudabhūtsaṃvitsaṃvedanamayī svayam || 5 ||
In that all-pervading, pure consciousness-filled sky, the self-aware consciousness itself arose, which is the essence of all beings.
sā tejaḥparamāṇutvamapaśyadvēdanāvaśāt | bhāvitārthātmakatayā svapnē tvamiva pānthatām || 6 ||
She perceived the ultimate particle of light due to the experience of pain, as if you were a traveler in a dream.
paramāṇurasaṃvittvādapśyadṇutāṃ svayam | bhāsvatīṃ padmajarajastulyāṃ saṃkalpanātmikām || 7 ||
Due to the lack of consciousness, the ultimate particle perceived itself as minute, like the pollen of a lotus, shining with the nature of imagination.
socchūnatāṃ bhāvayantī punarapyabhavatsvayam | cakṣurādīnīndriyāṇi vapuṣyanvabhavatsvataḥ || 8 ||
Meditating on the emptiness, it again became itself, and the senses like the eyes naturally arose in the body.
apaśyadagre ca jagaccakṣurādi svabhāvataḥ | ādhārādheyavadbhūtamayaṃ svapnapuraṃ yathā || 9 ||
Then, it perceived the world with the senses and their nature, as if it were a dream city, with the relationship of support and supported.
asuro nāma tatrāsītprāṇī mānī babhūva ha | asatyapratibhāsātma pitṛmātṛpitāmahaḥ || 10 ||
There was a being named Asura, who was proud and became arrogant. He had the nature of false appearances, with ancestors, parents, and grandparents.
darpotsiktatayā tatra kasyacitsa mahāmuneḥ | yadā mṛditavānāsīdāśramaṃ śarmabhājanam || 11 ||
Due to arrogance, someone there destroyed the peaceful hermitage of the great sage.
muniḥ śāpamadāttasya mahākāratayāśramaḥ | tvayā yannāśito mṛtvā bhava tvaṃ maśako'dhamaḥ || 12 ||
The sage cursed him, saying, 'Since you have destroyed my hermitage, you will become a lowly mosquito after death.'
sa tacchāpahutāśo'tha tasmineva tadā kṣaṇe | asuraṃ bhasmasāccakre jalamaurva ivānalaḥ || 13 ||
That very moment, consumed by the curse, he turned the demon into ashes, like fire consuming water.
nirākāraṃ nirādhāramākāśavalayopamam | cittaṃ kiṃcidivācetyamāsīccetanamāsuraṃ || 14 ||
The demon's consciousness became formless, without support, like the vast sky, and somewhat perceptible.
tadekātvaṃ yayau sāmyādbhūtākāśena cetanam | tadāspadena tatrātha vāyunā caikatāṃ yayau || 15 ||
That consciousness merged with the vast sky due to its similarity, and then it merged with the wind.
āsīccetanavātātmā'bhaviṣyatprāṇināmakaḥ | rajasā payasā vyāptastejasā nabhasāṇunā || 16 ||
The conscious being, the vital air, will become known as the living being | It is pervaded by passion, water, fire, and the subtle ether
sa pañcatanmātramayaścinmātralavako'ṇukaḥ | spandamāpa svabhāvena vyomni vātalavo yathā || 17 ||
That being, composed of the five subtle elements and a particle of pure consciousness, attained motion by its nature, like a particle of air in the sky
atha tasyānilāntasthaṃ cetanaṃ tadvyabudhyata | kālānilajalairbhūmau bījamaṅkurakṛdyathā || 18 ||
Then, the consciousness within that being became aware, like a seed sprouting on the earth due to the passage of time, air, and water
śuddhaśāpavidantasthā maśakatvavidāsya cit | vedhitā maśakāṅgāni viditvā maśako'bhavat || 19 ||
The pure consciousness, knowing the curse, entered the form of a mosquito | Having pierced the mosquito's body, it became a mosquito
svedajasyālpadehasya niḥśvāsanipatattanoḥ | dve tasya maśakasyeha dine bhavati jīvitam || 20 ||
For the mosquito, which has a small body born from sweat, the lifespan is two days due to the falling of breath
śrīrāma uvāca | prāṇināmiha sarveṣāṃ yonyantaraja eva kim | samudbhavaḥ saṃbhavati kimutānyo’pi vā prabho || 21 ||
Sri Rama said: Among all living beings here, does rebirth occur only through another womb? Or is there any other way, O Lord?
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | brahmādīnāṃ tṛṇāntānāṃ dvidhā bhavati saṃbhavaḥ | eko brahmamayo’nyastu bhrāntijastāvimau śrṛṇu || 22 ||
Sri Vasistha said: The origin of all beings, from Brahma to a blade of grass, is twofold. One is of the nature of Brahman, the other is born of delusion. Listen to these two.
pūrvarūḍhajagadbhrāntibhūtatanmātrarañjanāt | bhūtānāṃ saṃbhavaḥ prokto bhrāntijo dṛśyasaṅgataḥ || 23 ||
The origin of beings that arises from delusion is said to be due to the enjoyment of the subtle elements of the world, which is a prior illusion.
In the absence of the world illusion, the nature of beings itself becomes manifest. That is said to be of the nature of Brahman, not born of a womb.
Thus situated, that mosquito arose due to the influence of the world illusion, not from Brahman. O Rama, listen to the sequence of its activities.
kṣamekṣuśaṣpakakṣādipuñjaguñjeṣu guñjatā | svāyuṣo'rdhaṃ dinaṃ tena sarvaṃ bhuktam vivalgatā || 26 ||
In the fields of sugarcane, grass, and birds, while humming, half of one's lifespan is spent, and everything is enjoyed in that state.
śādvalodaradolāyāṃ dolanaṃ bālalīlayā | ciramārabdhameten sārdhaṃ maśikayā svayam || 27 ||
In the swing made of grass, the child swings playfully for a long time, along with the female mosquito.
dolāśramārtastatrāsau yāvadvivśrāmyati kvacit | tāvaddhariṇapādāgragiripātena cūrṇitaḥ || 28 ||
Exhausted from swinging, he rests there for a while, but is crushed by the fall of a deer's hoof from a mountain.
hariṇānanasaṃdarśatyaktaprāṇatayā tayā | pūrvakramagṛhītākṣaḥ sa jāto hariṇastataḥ || 29 ||
Seeing the face of the deer, he dies, and due to his previous actions, he is reborn as a deer.
viharanhariṇo'raṇye vyādhena dhanuṣā hataḥ | vyādhānanagadṛṣṭitvātsaṃjāto vyādha eva saḥ || 30 ||
While roaming in the forest as a deer, he is killed by a hunter with a bow. Due to seeing the hunter's face at the time of death, he is reborn as a hunter.
vyādho vaneṣu viharansaṃyāto munikānanam| tatra viśrāntavānsaṅgānmuminā pratibodhitaḥ || 31 ||
A hunter, wandering in the forest, entered the hermitage of a sage. There, he rested and was awakened by the sage.
bhrāntaḥ kimidamādīrghaduḥkhāya dhanuṣā mṛgān| haṃsi pāsi na kasmāttvaṃ tantraṃ jagati bhaṅgure || 32 ||
Confused, why do you kill deer with your bow, causing long-lasting suffering? You kill and protect, but why do you not realize the transient nature of the world?
āyurvāyuvighaṭṭitābhrapaṭalīlambāmbuvadbhaṅguraṃ bhogā meghavitānamadhyavilasatsaudāmanīcañcalāḥ| lolā yauvanalālanā jalarayaḥ kāyaḥ kṣaṇāpāyavānputra trāsamupetya saṃsṛtivaśānnirvāṇamanviṣyatāṃ || 33 ||
Life is as fragile as water droplets hanging from clouds dispersed by the wind. Pleasures are as fleeting as lightning flashing in the sky. Youth is fickle, the body is ephemeral, and wealth is like a mirage. O son, seek liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
