17.13.1

bhushuṇḍa uvāca | jagatprasararūpasya na deśa upayujyate | na kālo dhāraṇe stambha ālokasyāmbare yathā || 1 ||

Bhushunda said: The world, which is of the nature of expansion, does not require a place, nor does time require support, just as the sky does not require support for its light.

manomana-nir-māṇamātrametajjagat-trayam | śāntaṃ tanu laghu svacchaṃ vātāntaḥ saurabhādapi || 2 ||

The three worlds are merely the creation of the mind. They are peaceful, subtle, light, and pure, even more fragrant than the wind.

ciccamatkṛtimātrasyā sādho jagadaṇoḥ kila | vātāntaḥ saurabhaṃ meruranyānubhavayogataḥ || 3 ||

O sage, the entire universe is merely the wonder of consciousness. Just as the fragrance of the wind is experienced by others, so is the experience of the universe.

yaṃ pratyudeti sargo yaṃ sa evainaṃ hi cetati | padārthaḥ saṃniveśaṃ svamiva svapnaṃ pumāniva || 4 ||

That which arises in the mind is the same as the one who perceives it. The object of perception is like a dream, perceived by the individual as real.

atraivodāharantīmamitihāsaṃ purātanam | yadvṛttaṃ devarājasya trasareṇūdare purā || 5 ||

In this context, they narrate an ancient story that happened in the womb of Trasarenu, the wife of the king of the gods.

kvacitkadācitkasmiṃścitkiṃcitkalpadrume'bhavat | kasyāṃcidayugaśākhāyāṃ phalaṃ jagadudumbaram || 6 ||

In some part of the Kalpadruma, there was a fruit called Jagadudumbara on some branch of some era.

77.13.7

sasurāsurabhūtaughamaśakāhitaghughumam | śailamāṃsalapātāladyubhūmyugrakapāṭakam || 7 ||

It was filled with a multitude of gods, demons, and beings, and was adorned with various ornaments and jewels.

87.13.8

ciccamatkṛticārūccairvāsanārasapīvaram | vividhānubhavāmodaṃ cittāsvādamanoharam || 8 ||

It was a marvel of consciousness, filled with delightful experiences and pleasing to the mind.

97.13.9

bṛhadbrahmataruprauḍhasattāvrataṭikotigam | ahaṃkāramahāvr̥ntaṃ samālokasamujjvalam || 9 ||

It was the great tree of Brahman, filled with the essence of existence and the radiance of self-awareness.

107.13.10

mokṣaddhāravikāsyāsyaṃ saridabdhiśirāvṛtam | mātrāpañcakakośasthaṃ tarattārakasīkaram || 10 ||

It was the face of liberation, covered with the waters of the ocean and rivers, and contained within the five sheaths of elements.

kalpāvasānajaraṭhaṃ kākakokilagāmyatha patitaṃ śāntimāyātaṃ kvāpyantāvāsanaṃ gatam || 11 ||

At the end of the kalpa, the old body, accessible to crows and cuckoos, fell and attained peace, reaching some final resting place.

tatrābhūdamarādhīśaḥ śakrastribhuvaneśvaraḥ kṣaudrakumbhaniṣaṇṇānāṃ kṣudrāṇāmiva nāyakaḥ || 12 ||

There, the lord of the gods, Indra, the ruler of the three worlds, became like the leader of small beings sitting around a pot of honey.

gurūpadeśasvābhāsātsa kṣīṇāvaraṇo'bhavat mahātmā bhāvitāntātmā pūrvāparavidāṃ varaḥ || 13 ||

Through the practice of the teachings of the guru, he became free from impurities, a great soul, purified in his inner self, and the best among those who know the past and the future.

nārāyaṇādiṣu tataḥ kadācidvīryaśāliṣu kvacideva nilīneṣu satsvekaḥ sasurādhipaḥ || 14 ||

Then, sometimes, among the powerful ones like Narayana and others, he alone, along with the king of the gods, remained hidden.

śastrajvālānalodbhārairayudhyata mahāsuraiḥ vijitastairmahāvīryairato vyadravadādrutam || 15 ||

He fought with the great demons who had the power of weapon-flames, but was defeated by their great might and thus fled hurriedly.

diśo daśa suvegena dudrāvābhidruto'ribhiḥ | na viśrāmāspadaṃ prāpa paraloka ivādhamaḥ || 16 ||

In all ten directions, he fled swiftly, pursued by enemies | He found no place of rest, like the lowest in the other world || 16 ||

tadbhāntadṛṣṭiṣvarriṣu manāk chidramavāpya saḥ | praśamaṃ kāyasaṃkalpaṃ nītvā svaṃ svāntare bahiḥ || 17 ||

In the eyes of those who were afraid, he found a small opening | He calmed his body's resolve and took himself inside || 17 ||

kamapyarkāṃśukośasthaṃ trasareṇuṃ viveśa saḥ | saṃvidrūpatayā padmakośaṃ madhukaro yathā || 18 ||

He entered a trembling particle of sunlight contained in a ray | Like a bee entering a lotus, he took the form of consciousness || 18 ||

sa tatrāśu viśaśrāma cirādāśvāsamāyayau | atha vismṛtasaṃgrāmo nivṛttiṃ samupāgamat || 19 ||

He quickly rested there, regaining his breath after a long time | Then, forgetting the battle, he attained peace || 19 ||

kalpitaṃ sadma tatrātha sa kṣaṇādanubhūtavān | tasminsadmani padmānte reme sva iva viṣṭare || 20 ||

He then experienced a created abode there in an instant | In that abode, at the end of the lotus, he enjoyed as if on his own bed || 20 ||

gṛhasthaḥ sa dadarśātha kalpitaṃ nagaraṃ hariḥ | maṇimuktāpravālādikṛtaprākāramandiram || 21 ||

Then the householder, Hari, saw the imagined city, adorned with walls and palaces made of jewels, pearls, and coral.

nagarāntargato'paśyattato janapadaṃ hariḥ | nānādrigramagovāṭapattnāraṇyarājitam || 22 ||

Then Hari saw a countryside within the city, adorned with various mountains, villages, cow sheds, towns, and forests.

tādṛgratiścetitavānsaśakro bhuvanaṃ tataḥ | sādryabdhyurvīnadīśāntaṃ sakriyākālakalpanam || 23 ||

Then, along with Indra, he created such a world, complete with oceans, mountains, rivers, and the passage of time.

247.13.24

tādṛgratiścetitavān sa śakrastrijagattataḥ | sapātālamahīvyomaviṣṭapārkādiparvatam || 24 ||

Then, along with Indra, he created the three worlds, complete with the underworld, the earth, the sky, and the mountains.

tatrātiṣṭhatsureśatve sa bhogabharabhūṣitaḥ | putro babhūva tasyātha kundo nāmātha vīryavān || 25 ||

There, he established himself as the lord of the gods, adorned with the splendor of enjoyments. Then, he had a son named Kunda, who was very powerful.

tato jīvitaparyante tyaktvā dehamaninditaḥ | nirvāṇamāyayau śakro niḥsneha iva dīpakaḥ || 26 ||

Then, at the end of his life, the unblemished one, abandoning his body, attained Nirvana like a lamp without oil.

kundastailokyarājo'bhūjjanayitvā sutaṃ nijam | kālena jīvitasyaante jagāma paramaṃ padam || 27 ||

Kunda, the king of the three worlds, having begotten his own son, at the end of his life, attained the supreme state.

tatputro'pi tathaivātha kṛtvā rājye sutaṃ nijam | jagāma jīvitasyaante pāvanaṃ paramaṃ padam || 28 ||

His son also, in the same manner, having established his own son in the kingdom, at the end of his life, attained the supreme purified state.

evaṃ pautrasahasrāṇi samatītāni sundara | tatrādyāpi sureśasya yeṣāṃ rājye sthitoṃ'śakaḥ || 29 ||

Thus, thousands of descendants have passed, O beautiful one, and even today, the share of the lord of the gods is established in their kingdom.

ityadyayāvadamareśvaravaṃśa eva saṃkalpite jagati śakrapadaṃ vidhatte | tasminkṣate'pi galite'pi hate'pi naṣṭe kvāpyambare dinakarātapapāvanāṇau || 30 ||

Thus, even today, the lineage of the lord of the gods continues to hold the position of Indra in this world. Even if it is diminished, dissolved, destroyed, or lost, the purifying sun remains somewhere in the sky.
