śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | ākāśaḥ śabdatanmātraṃ sparśatanmātrako'nilḥ | tatsaṅgotkarṣajaṃ tejastacchāntiścetyapāṃ sthitiḥ || 1 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: Space is the subtle element of sound, wind is the subtle element of touch, from their combination arises fire, and from its pacification comes the state of water.

bhūreṣāṃ saṅghaḥ svapnābhe jagadbhāne kramastviti | kathaṃ nāma kilāmūrtādvyomno mūrtiḥ pravartate || 2 ||

English

The combination of these elements creates the world, which appears like a dream. How can the formless sky produce forms?

gatvā sudūramapyetajjñapteścetparikalpyate | tadādāveva satyarathe doṣo'sminka ivāmale || 3 ||

English

Even if one goes very far in this knowledge, if it is imagined, then what fault is there in the pure truth from the beginning?

jñaptirevātivimalā svarūpātmani bhāti yat | tadeva jagadityuktaṃ satyamityeva satyataḥ || 4 ||

English

That knowledge which shines as the pure self is indeed the world. It is said to be the truth, truly the truth.

na kvacitsanti bhūtāni pañca kuṭyādayo na vā | asantyapyanubhūtāni nanu svapnadaśāsviva || 5 ||

English

The five elements do not exist anywhere, nor do the sense organs. Though they do not exist, they are experienced like in a dream state.

svabhāva eva vimalo yathā svapne purādivat | kacatyevaṃ jāgratīdaṃ jagadvadvastutastu kham || 6 ||

English

The nature is inherently pure, just as in a dream, it appears as a city, etc. Similarly, this world appears in the waking state, but in reality, it is space.

cetanākāśa evāhaṃ tadevedaṃ jagatsthitam | ityahaṃ jagadityekaṃ khamevaikaṃ śilāghanam || 7 ||

English

I am the conscious space, and this world is established in that. Thus, I and the world are one, just like the space is one and solid.

yadādisargajananaṃ yatkalpāntavivartanam | yadvā bhuvanasansthānaṃ taddhi vyoma nirākṛti || 8 ||

English

That which is the creation at the beginning, that which is the transformation at the end of the kalpa, or that which is the establishment of the worlds, that indeed is the formless space.

sati vā'sati vā dehe nirduḥkhasukhatvamakṣayaṃ mokṣaḥ | buddhe'male svabhāve nirbhara viśrāntirastu sarveha || 9 ||

English

Whether the body exists or not, the state of being free from pleasure and pain is eternal liberation. May there be complete rest in the pure, natural state of the intellect.
