16.94.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | evaṃ vadati vai kumbhe cittatyāgaṃ muhurmmuhuḥ | antarvicārayansaumyo rājā vacanamabravīt || 1 ||

Śrīvasiṣṭha said: While Kumbha was speaking thus, repeatedly about the renunciation of the mind, the gentle king, reflecting within, spoke these words.

śikhidhvaja uvāca | hṛdayākāśavihago hṛdayadrumamarkaṭaḥ | bhūyobhūyo nirastaṃ hi samabhyetyeva me manaḥ || 2 ||

Śikhidhvaja said: The monkey of the heart-tree, the bird of the heart-sky, repeatedly comes back to me, even though it is driven away again and again.

jānāmi caitadādātuṃ matsyaṃ jāla ivākulam | tyāgamasya na jānāmi cittaṃ dravya ivottama || 3 ||

I know how to catch a fish with a net, but I do not know how to renounce the mind, which is like the best of substances.

cittasyaādau svarūpaṃ me yathāvadbhagavanvada | tataścittaparityāgaṃ yathāvadvada me prabho || 4 ||

O Lord, please tell me the true nature of the mind at the beginning. Then, O Lord, please tell me the true way to renounce the mind.

kumbha uvāca | vāsanaiava mahārāja svarūpaṃ viddhi cetasaḥ | cittaśabdastu paryāyo vāsanāyā udāhṛtaḥ || 5 ||

Kumbha said: O great king, know that the true nature of the mind is desire. The word 'mind' is just another name for desire.

tyāgastasyātisukaraḥ susādhyaḥ spandanādapi | rājyādapyadhikānandaḥ kusumādapi sundaraḥ || 6 ||

Renunciation is very easy and achievable for him, even easier than the movement of the eyelids. It brings more joy than a kingdom and is more beautiful than a flower.

mūrkhasya tu manastyāgo nūnaṃ duḥsādhyatāṃ gataḥ | pāmarasyeva sāmrājyaṃ tṛṇasyeva sumerutā || 7 ||

However, for a fool, renunciation of the mind is indeed difficult to achieve. It is like a commoner attaining sovereignty or a blade of grass becoming as great as Mount Meru.

śikhidhvaja uvāca | svarūpaṃ vedmi cittasya vāsanāmayamākulam | tyāgaḥ sa manye duḥsādhyaḥ vajranirgilanādapi || 8 ||

Shikhidhvaja said: I know the nature of the mind, which is full of desires and troubles. I think that renunciation is difficult, even more so than piercing a diamond.

96.94.9

saṃsṛtyāmodapuṣpasya duḥkhadāhānalasya ca | jagadabjamṛṇālasya mohamārutakhasya ca || 9 ||

In the cycle of existence, the flower of joy, the fire of sorrow's burning, the lotus of the world's debt, and the wind of delusion's sky.

śarīrayantravāhasya dṛtpadmabhramarasya ca | ayatnāccetasastyāgo yathā bhavati tadvad || 10 ||

Just as the body's vehicle, the bee hovering over the lotus, and the mind's renunciation happen effortlessly.

kumbha uvāca | sarvanāśo'sya yaḥ sādho cetasaḥ saṃsṛtikṣayaḥ | sa eva cittasaṃtyāga ityuktaṃ dīrghadarśibhiḥ || 11 ||

Kumbha said: O virtuous one, the complete destruction of the mind, which is the cessation of its wandering, is indeed the renunciation of the mind, as said by the far-sighted.

śikhidhvaja uvāca | cittatyāgādahaṃ manye cittanāśaḥ susiddhaye | abhāvaḥ śataśo vyādheḥ kathamasya anubhūyate || 12 ||

Shikhidhvaja said: I think that from the renunciation of the mind, the destruction of the mind is easily accomplished. How can the absence of hundreds of afflictions be experienced?

kumbha uvāca | ahaṃbījaścittadrumaḥ sasaśākhāphalapallavaḥ | unmūlaya samūlaṃ tamākāśahṛdayo bhava || 13 ||

Kumbha said: The tree of the mind, with the seed of 'I', having branches, fruits, and leaves, uproot it completely and become one with the heart of the sky.

śikhidhvaja uvāca | cetasaḥ kiṃ mune mūlaṃ ko'kuṃraḥ ko'sya saṃbhavaḥ | kāḥśāstrāḥkeca vā skandhāḥ kathamunmūlyate ca saḥ || 14 ||

Shikhidhvaja said: O sage, what is the root of the mind? Who is the seed? What is its origin? What are its scriptures and branches? How is it uprooted?

kumbha uvāca | ahamarthodayo yo'yaṃ sa cittāvedanātmakaḥ | etaccittadrumnasyāsya viddhi bījaṃ mahāmate || 15 ||

Kumbha said: O wise one, the rise of the sense of 'I' is the essence of mental experience. Know this to be the seed of this tree of the mind.

paramātmāpadaṃ kṣetraṃ kṣetraṃ māyāmayasya tat | etasmātprathamodbhinnādaṃkuro'nubhavākṛtiḥ || 16 ||

The supreme state is the field, the field is full of illusion, from this first arising, experience the form.

niścayātmā nirākāro buddhiritveva socyate | asya buddhyabhidhānasya yāṅkurasya prapīnatā || 17 ||

The determined self is formless, it is considered as intelligence, the fullness of the sprout of this intelligence.

saṃkalparūpiṇī tasyāścittanāmamano'bhidhā | jīvo mithyopalambhātmā śūnyātmā hyupalopamaḥ || 18 ||

The form of resolution of that is called mind, the living being is the false apprehension, the self is empty, indeed it is a comparison.

stambhaḥ kāyo'yametasya snāyvasthirasarañjitaḥ | deśāntare'ṅkuroddeśe kālaspando'sya vāsanā || 19 ||

The pillar is this body, adorned with sinews, bones, and blood, in another place, the sprout's indication, the time's vibration is its impression.

śākhāyāścittavṛkṣasya dīrghā dūragatāstatāḥ | indriyāṇyalpabhogāśca bhāvābhāvātmayonayaḥ || 20 ||

The branches of the mind-tree are long and far-reaching, the senses are of little enjoyment, born of the nature of existence and non-existence.

vitapaughā mahānto'sya śubhāśubhaphalākulāḥ | īdṛśasyāsya cittasya durvṛkṣasya pratikṣaṇam || 21 ||

The great branches of this tree of the mind are filled with auspicious and inauspicious fruits. Such is the nature of this mind-tree, which is a bad tree, moment by moment.

śāstrāvilavanaṃ kurvanmūlakāṣe bharaṃ kuru | śikhidhvaja uvāca | cittadrumasya śākhādeḥ kurvāṇo'haṃ vikartanam || 22 ||

While engaging in the study of scriptures, fill the root with essence. Shikhidhvaja said: I am cutting the branches of the tree of the mind.

kathaṃ karomi mūlasya niḥśeṣakaṣaṇaṃ mune | kumbha uvāca | vāsanā vividhāḥ śākhāḥ phalaspandādinānvitāḥ || 23 ||

How do I completely destroy the root, O sage? Kumbha said: Various desires are the branches, accompanied by the trembling of fruits and other things.

abhāvitā bhavantyantarlūnāḥ saṃvidvalena te | asaṃsaktamanā maunī śāntavādavicāraṇaḥ || 24 ||

Those who are not cultivated become internally uprooted by the power of awareness. The one who is detached, silent, and engaged in peaceful speech and contemplation.

saṃprāptakārī yaḥ so'ntarlūnaścittalato bhavet | cittadrumalatājālaṃ pauruṣeṇa vikartayan || 25 ||

The one who has attained the state of action becomes internally uprooted from the creeper of the mind. By human effort, cutting the network of the mind-tree's creepers.

yastiṣṭhati sa mūlasya yogyo nikaṣaṇe bhavet | gauṇaṃ śākhāvilavanaṃ mukhyaṃ mūlavikartanam || 26 ||

One who stands firmly is fit for uprooting the root | The secondary is the cutting of branches, the primary is the uprooting of the root.

cittavṛkṣasya tena tvaṃ mūlakāṣaparo bhava | mukhyatvena mahābuddhe mūladāhamalaṃ kuru || 27 ||

Therefore, you should be focused on the root of the tree of the mind | O great wise one, completely burn the root with primary importance.

cittakaṇṭakakhaṇḍasya bhavatyevamacittatā | śikhidhvaja uvāca | ahaṃbhāvātmanaścittadrumabījasya he mune | ko'nalo dahanākhye'smin karmṇyarthakaro bhavet || 28 ||

Thus, the state of being without mind arises from the destruction of the thorns of the mind | Shikhidhvaja said, 'O sage, what fire in this action called burning is effective for the seed of the tree of the mind which is the ego?

kumbha uvāca | rājan svātmavicāro'yaṃ ko'haṃ syāmiti rūpadhṛk | cittadurdumabījasya dahane dahanaḥ smṛtaḥ || 29 ||

Kumbha said, 'O king, this self-inquiry, 'Who am I?' is the burning for the burning of the seed of the evil tree of the mind.

śikhidhvaja uvāca | mune mayā svayā buddhyā bahuśaḥ pravicāritam | yāvannāhaṃ jagannorvīvanamaṇḍalamaṇḍitam || 30 ||

Shikhidhvaja said, 'O sage, I have often reflected with my own intellect | Until I realized that I am not this world adorned with the circle of the earth.

nādreṣṭaṭaṃ na vipinaṃ na parṇaspandanādi ca | jaḍatvānn na ca dehādi na māṃsāsthyasṛgādi ca || 31 ||

I am not the earth, not the forest, not the trembling of leaves, etc. Due to inertness, I am not the body, nor flesh, bones, blood, etc.

karmendriyāṇyapi na ca na ca buddhīndriyāṇi ca | na mano nāpi ca matirnāhaṃkāraśca jāḍyataḥ || 32 ||

Nor am I the organs of action, nor the organs of perception, nor the mind, nor the intellect, nor the ego, due to inertness.

kaṭakatvaṃ yathā hemni tathāhaṃtvaṃ cidātmani | jaḍaṃ tv asadrūpatayā tena tannāsti he mune || 33 ||

Just as the quality of being a bracelet is in gold, so is the sense of 'I' in the conscious self. That which is inert and unreal does not exist, O sage.

saṃniveśanivāsātmā sarvārthādiḥ pare pade | vidyate nānyadanyatvānnabhasīva mahādrumaḥ || 34 ||

The self is the abode of all meanings in the supreme state. It exists without any otherness, like the great tree in the sky.

jānannapīti bhagavannahaṃtvamalamārjanam | antaryajjñāṃ na jānāmi tena tapye ciraṃ mune || 35 ||

O Lord, even though I know that the sense of 'I' is a cleansing of impurities, I do not know the inner knower. Therefore, I suffer for a long time, O sage.

kumbha uvāca | etāvanmātrakaṃ vṛndaṃ yadi na tvaṃ mahīpate | jaḍatvāt tanmahābud'dhe yo'si tadvad me'nagha || 36 ||

Kumbha said: If you, O King, do not consider this group to be so insignificant due to its inertness, then, O wise one, speak to me in that manner.

śikhidhvaja uvāca | cinmātramahamacchātmavedanaṃ viduṣāṃ vara | yatra bhāvāḥ svadante te nirṇīyante ca yena vā || 37 ||

Shikhidhvaja said: I am pure consciousness, the experience of the self, O best among the wise. Where those feelings are experienced and determined by it.

evaṃrūpasya me lagnaṃ nūnaṃ malamakāraṇam | sakāraṇaṃ vāhamiti yatpadaṃ ca na vedmyaham || 38 ||

Thus, the attachment to my form is certainly without cause. Whether it is with cause or without cause, I do not know that state.

asadetadanātmīyaṃ pramārṣṭuṃ malamātmanaḥ | mune yadā na śaknomi tena tapye sudaāruṇam || 39 ||

That non-existent, non-self impurity is unable to be removed from the self. O sage, when I am unable to do so, I suffer greatly.

kumbha uvāca | brūhi kiṃ tanmahābāho lagnaṃ tava malam mahat | sthito'si yena saṃsārī satā vāpyathavā'satā || 40 ||

Kumbha said: Tell me, O mighty-armed one, what is that great impurity attached to you? By which you are situated in the world, whether it is real or unreal.

śikhidhvaja uvāca | cittadrūmasya yadbījamahaṃbhāvaśca me malam | tacca tyaktuṃ na jānāmi tyaktaṃ tyaktamupaiti mām || 41 ||

Shikhidhvaja said: The seed of the tree of the mind is the sense of 'I', which is my impurity | I do not know how to abandon it, and even when abandoned, it comes back to me

kumbha uvāca | kāraṇājjāyate kāryaṃ yattatsarvatra saṃbhavet | anyattvasaddvicandrābhaṃ dṛṣṭametanna vidyate || 42 ||

Kumbha said: From a cause, an effect is born, and that is possible everywhere | However, something that is unreal, like the illusion of two moons, is not seen

kāraṇājjāyate kāryamahaṃbhāvādbhavāṅkuraḥ | iti kāraṇamanviṣya kathayasva mamādhunā || 43 ||

From a cause, an effect is born, and from the sense of 'I', the sprout of existence arises | Therefore, seeking the cause, tell me now

śikhidhvaja uvāca | mune'hamiti doṣasya vedanaṃ vedmi kāraṇam | tadyathopaśamaṃ yāti tanme vada munīśvara || 44 ||

Shikhidhvaja said: O Sage, I know the cause of the suffering of the fault of 'I' | Tell me, O great sage, how it can be pacified

citaścetyonmukhatvena duḥkhāyāyamahaṃsthitaḥ | cetyopaśamanaṃ brūhi mune tadupaśāntaye || 45 ||

With the mind turned towards the objects of the senses, I am situated in sorrow | Tell me, O Sage, the pacification of the senses for that pacification

kumbha uvāca | kāraṇaṃ kāraṇajño'si vedaṇasya vadāśu me | tatastvāṃ bodhayiṣyāmi kāraṇākāraṇakramam || 46 ||

Kumbha said: You are the knower of the cause, tell me quickly the cause of perception. Then I will enlighten you about the order of cause and effect.

vedyavedanarūpasya cetyasañcetanasya me | akāraṇaṃ kāraṇatāṃ yadyātaṃ tava tadvada || 47 ||

Tell me the cause and non-cause of the perceptible and imperceptible, conscious and unconscious forms. If it has reached you, then tell me that.

śikhidhvaja uvāca | cetyacetanarūpasya vedyasaṃvedanākṛteḥ | iyaṃ padārthasatteha dehādi kāraṇaṃ mune || 48 ||

Shikhidhvaja said: O sage, the cause of the perceptible and imperceptible, conscious and unconscious forms, is the body and other material objects.

śarīrāditayodeti vedaṇaṃ vastusattayā | asatyābhāsayā spando yathā pavanalekhayā || 49 ||

Perception arises from the body and other material objects due to their existence. Just as the movement of air creates an illusion, so does the perception.

asattā vastusattāyā nāvagacchāmyahaṃ yathā | ahaṃtvavedanaṃ cittabījaṃ samupaśāmyati || 50 ||

I do not comprehend the non-existence of material existence. The perception of the ego is the seed of the mind that calms down.

kumbha uvāca | vidyate yadi dehādivastusattā tadasti te | abhāvāddehasattādeḥ kiṃniṣṭhaṃ tava vedanam || 51 ||

Kumbha said: If the existence of the body and other things is real, then it exists for you. If there is no existence of the body, what is your feeling?

śikhidhvaja uvāca | yasyopalabhyate kiṃcitsvarūpaṃ kalanātmakam | asadrūpaṃ kathaṃ tatsyātprakāśaḥ syātkathaṃ tamaḥ || 52 ||

Shikhidhvaja said: How can that which is perceived to have some form and is changeable be non-existent? How can there be light and darkness?

hastapādādisaṃyuktaḥ kriyāphalavilāsavān | sadānubhūyamāno'yaṃ deho nāsti kathaṃ mune || 53 ||

Endowed with hands, feet, and other limbs, enjoying the fruits of actions, always experienced, how can this body not exist, O sage?

kumbha uvāca | kāraṇaṃ yasya kāryasya bhūmipāla na vidyate | vidyate neha tatkāryaṃ tatsaṃvittistu vibhramaḥ || 54 ||

Kumbha said: O king, if the cause of an effect does not exist, then that effect does not exist here. That perception is indeed an illusion.

kāraṇena vinā kāryaṃ śarīraṃ na kadācana | vidyate yasya no bījaṃ taddravyaṃ kveva jāyate || 55 ||

Without a cause, the body as an effect never exists. Where does the substance come from if there is no seed?

akāraṇaṃ tu yatkāryaṃ sadivāgre'nubhūyate | taddrṣṭurvibhramādviddhi mṛgatṛṣṇājalopamam || 56 ||

Whatever effect is perceived as existing without a cause, know that to be an illusion of the observer, like the mirage water.

avidyamānameva tvaṃ viddhi mithyābhramoditam | nātiyatnavato'pyetanmṛgatṛṣṇāmbu labhyate || 57 ||

Know that which is non-existent to be a false illusion. Even with great effort, this mirage water cannot be obtained.

asato dvīndubimbāderna yuktaṃ kāraṇekṣaṇam | vandhyātanayasarvāṅgamaṇḍanaṃ kasya rājate || 58 ||

It is not appropriate to search for the cause of non-existent things like the reflection of the moon. Who would adorn the whole body of a barren woman's son?

kāraṇena vinā kāryaṃ śarīrādyasthipañjaram | avidyamānamevedaṃ viddhyasaṃbhava to nṛpa || 59 ||

Know that the body, which is an effect without a cause, is non-existent due to its impossibility, O King.

hastapādādiyuktasya śarīrasya munīśvara | nityamālakṣyamāṇasya pitā kasmānna kāraṇam || 60 ||

O great sage, why is the father not the cause of the body, which is always perceived with hands, feet, etc.?

kumbha uvāca | kāraṇābhāvato rājan pitā nāma na vidyate | asato yattu saṃjātamasadeva taducyate || 61 ||

Kumbha said: O King, there is no such thing as a father without a cause. Whatever arises from non-existence is itself non-existent.

padārthānāṃ ca kāryāṇāṃ kāraṇaṃ bījamucyate | saṃbhavatyanga jagati na bījena vināṅkuraḥ || 62 ||

The cause of all objects and actions is called the seed. In this world, a sprout cannot exist without a seed.

tasmānna kāraṇaṃ yasya kāryasyehopapadyate | bījābhāve hi tannāsti tatsaṃvittistu vibhramaḥ || 63 ||

Therefore, that which has no cause cannot be justified in this world. Indeed, without a seed, it does not exist; such awareness is an illusion.

avaśyaṃ khalu yannāsti nirbījaṃ tanmatibhramaḥ | dvīndutvamarubhūmyambuvandhyāputradashāsamam || 64 ||

Indeed, that which does not exist is without a seed and is a delusion of the mind. It is like the illusion of seeing two moons, a mirage, a barren woman's son, and the equality of the sky and the earth.

śikhidhvaja uvāca | pitāmahānāṃ putrāṇāṃ pitṛṇāṃ ca jagattraye | ādyaḥ pitāmahaḥ kasmātpūrvotpattau na kāraṇam || 65 ||

Shikhidhvaja said: In the three worlds, among the ancestors and their sons, why is the first ancestor not considered the cause of the initial creation?

Due to the eternal absence of its own seed, the cause, the grandfather, although seen as different, does not exist due to illusion.

mṛgatṛṣṇāmbuvadbhrāntirūpa evāvabhāsate | pitāmahārthakāritvamapi tasya bhramātmakam || 68 ||

It appears as an illusion like the mirage water, and even the purpose of the grandfather is illusory.

pitāmahodare tasya mithyāpratyayataḥ sthitiḥ | ghanā tava nivṛttaiva mārjayiṣyāmyathetarat || 69 ||

In the belly of the grandfather, there is a false notion of existence, which is dense and will be removed.

tasmāccidātmakatayātmani cittato'yaṃ nityaṃ svayaṃ kacati bhūmipa devadevaḥ | tenaiva padmaja iti svayamātmanātmā proktaḥ svarūpa iti śāntamidaṃ samastam || 70 ||

Therefore, this consciousness, which is the self, always shines by itself in the self. Thus, the lord of the earth, the god of gods, is called Padmaja, the self of the self, the true form. This entire universe is peaceful.
