Know the eight-fold city to be the living being which is the arising of senses in the womb. Whatever one meditates upon quickly, one perceives accordingly.
Pure consciousness arises, which is the unblemished perception. From that, the infinite self-awareness arises, endowed with the eight-fold city of the living being.
It is not due to oneness, not due to infinity, not due to being unknowable, not due to being flawless, not due to non-existence, not due to multiplicity, not due to emptiness, the supreme state is established.
cetyādibuddhyā tat kiñcinn na manastāṃ ca gacchati na ca jīvatvam āyāti na ca puryaṣṭakātmikā || 7 ||
By the intellect that begins with consciousness, it does not attain the state of mind, nor does it attain the state of life, nor does it become the eight-fold city.
Therefore, the individual soul, which is the embodiment of consciousness and consists of the mind, is said to be merely an illusion, and this is taught for instruction.
In that state of complete tranquility, knowledge remains. Where even the vast sky appears as small as an atom, and a great mountain appears as minute as a mustard seed.
How can that which is seen be obtained as a real object? Even with effort, it is obtained like the water of a mirage.
This is the thought of ignorance, such as the eightfold city of the individual soul and so on. It is the imagination of the self, which is completely unreal.
As if attaining the state of individual soul, situated in the concept of the eightfold city, the power is stained with defects and is inclined towards awakening consciousness.
I am the sprout today, I am the sun today, I am the rain cloud today. As the cloud stands, so does the self, in the form of existence and non-existence.
In Brahman, the self itself is established, shines, and reflects. Even without a body, it becomes dual due to its inherent nature of pure consciousness.
Due to the omnipresence of consciousness, sentience is always present in the mind. Just as the nature of gold is insentient, so is the inert nature of the bracelet.
The mind, which is of the nature of sentience and insentience, perceives itself as it is seen. Just as whatever state it perceives, it becomes that state.
Just as a village seen in a dream becomes real at that moment, similarly, the body moves from one body to another, and this body is of the nature of reflection.
vastu dṛṣṭamadṛṣṭaṃ ca svapne samanubhūyate | jīvasvapne jagadrūpaṃ viddhi vedyavidāṃ vara || 44 ||
In a dream, both seen and unseen objects are experienced. Know that in the dream of the individual soul, the form of the world is experienced, O best among the knowers of the knowable.
The self is formless and is the essence of the mind. Its emptiness is extremely vast. Its air-like nature is like a great tree, and its body-like nature is like Mount Meru.
Being free from passion through the natural order, one is liberated without any state. The state of deep sleep is the only state where the inert are embraced.
sthāvarādyāsvavasthāsu kalpavṛkṣadaśāsu ca | bhavatyeva suṣuptastho ghanamohaśilāghanaḥ || 56 ||
In all states of existence, whether inanimate or animate, and in the state of the wish-fulfilling tree, one remains in a state of deep sleep, as dense as a stone.
suṣuptatāsya jaḍatā svapnottheyam hi sansṛtiḥ | yaḥ prabodho'sya sā muktistajjāgradyā tu turyatā || 57 ||
The inertness of deep sleep is the cause of this worldly existence. The awakening from this state is liberation, and the state of wakefulness is the fourth state.
Liberation comes from the awakening of the individual self. From this awakening, one attains the supreme self, just as copper, when purified, becomes gold.
The liberation that comes from the awakening of the individual self is said to be of two kinds: one is liberation while living, and the other is liberation after death.
jīvanmuktirhi turyatvaṃ turyātītaṃ padaṃ tataḥ | bodho jīvaḥ prabodho'yaṃ sa ca buddhiprayatnataḥ || 60 ||
Liberation while living is the state of the fourth. The state beyond the fourth is the supreme state. The individual self is consciousness, and this awakening is through the effort of the intellect.
Falsely imagined in one's own heart, it is established as stable. In the inner space of beings, there is nothing other than the power of consciousness.
Seeing that very consciousness as something else, the foolish one indeed laments. In the inner space of beings, there is nothing other than the supreme consciousness.
Wherever the world is seen, it is amazingly manifested by illusion. Just as various illusions arise from the reflections in a pot of water, so too the world appears diverse.
Similarly, in the inner space of beings, the false cycle of transmigration arises. Bondage is the bond of impressions, and liberation is the abode of impressions.
The end of desires is deep sleep; in dreams, the state flickers. This dense delusion of desires is the individual soul, experiencing the state of immobility and so forth.
The intermediate desires are the animal beings; the bodily desires are the human beings. When the inner life ends, external objects like pots are born.
jīvaikyādubhayoḥ sattā grāhyagrāhakayostadā | ātmānātmasamālīḍho bahirantaryadā citā || 68 ||
From the unity of the individual soul, both the subject and the object exist. When the self and the non-self are united, the consciousness pervades both inside and outside.
The single consciousness, the self, shines as the form of internal and external arts. The wonder of the three worlds of consciousness is sufficient without the concept of differences.
Just as the ocean casts off all distinctions of water, remaining only as pure space, similarly, this entire universe, having cast off all distinctions, is the pure, primordial, supreme state, free from all afflictions and fully awakened.
