Book 6 of the Yoga Vasishtha, chapter 49 — 36 verses in Sanskrit, Devanagari and IAST, with a plain English and Hindi translation of every verse.
The English and Hindi are machine translations, not yet reviewed by a scholar. How they are madeये कैसे बने
Vasishtha said: O dear one, that which is a change in the original state of something is called a modification, like the transformation of milk into curd.
Milk does not return to its original state after becoming curd. Similarly, Brahman, which is pure and unchanging, remains the same in the beginning, middle, and end.
The apparent modification seen in the beginning, middle, and end is merely a disturbance of consciousness. There is no real modification in the unchanging.
Sri Rama said: When there is always the pure and non-dual Brahman, what is the origin of ignorance, which is of the nature of the illusion of knowledge?
Vasishtha said: This entire universe is the reality of Brahman. It was, it is, and it will be, unchanging, without beginning or end. There is no ignorance, this is certain.
Even in the sequence of the signified and the signifier, denoted by the word 'Brahman,' there is no difference. This sequence is to teach the absence of duality.
You, I, the hopes of the world, the sky, the earth, and even fire, etc., are all merely Brahman, without beginning or end. There is no ignorance, even in the mind.
The sequence of calculations such as 'This jiva is made of ignorance' is fabricated by the best of scholars for the enlightenment of the unenlightened.
yuktyaiva bodhayitvaiṣa jīva ātmani yojyate | yadyuktyāsādyate kāryaṃ na tadyatnaśatair api || 19 ||
Only by reasoning is this jiva enlightened and united with the Self. If a task is accomplished by reasoning, it cannot be achieved even with hundreds of efforts.
asaṃvedyamahāsaṃvitkoṭimātraṃ jagattrayam | ekapratyayavānantaḥ kurvannapi na lipyase || 24 ||
The three worlds are insignificant compared to the great consciousness, which is beyond comprehension. Though acting with a single intention, you are not affected.
That which is without beginning or end, which is pure existence, is the supreme state. You are established in that pure consciousness which is all-pervading and one with the self.
That which is Brahman, the self, and the fourth state, and that which is ignorance and nature, is non-dual and one with the self, like clay in a hundred pots.
The nature of the self is not different, just as a pot is made of clay. The inner self is the essence of existence, just as the pot is essentially clay.
The difference between the two arises from ignorance and dissolves with knowledge. Just as the illusion of a snake in a rope arises from ignorance and dissolves with knowledge.
no cetpatati citkṣetre kalanābījakaṃ tataḥ | cittāṅkurā na jāyante sukhaduḥkhalavadrumāḥ || 35 ||
If the seed of mental agitation does not fall into the field of consciousness, then the sprouts of the mind, which are the trees of happiness and sorrow, do not arise.
The duality in the world, which is unreal and born of ignorance, should be abandoned by the destruction of ignorance, as you have attained knowledge. By the splendor of the state of being one with the Self, there is no fear of existence, indeed there is no sorrow, this is the essence of the highest truth for us.
