śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | tataḥ sa jīvo bhagavandṛṣṭavāndehasambhramam | ādisarge nabhaḥsaṃsthaḥ kāmavasthāmupaiti hi || 1 ||
Sri Vasishtha said: Then, my lord, that soul, having seen the confusion of having a body, comes to a state of desire while it rests in empty space at the start of creation.
īśvara uvāca | parasmatparame vyomni pūrvoktakramato vapuḥ | jīvaḥ paśyati sampannaṃ sa ca svapnanaro yathā || 2 ||
Ishvara said: In that space higher than the highest, in the way told before, the soul sees a body take shape, just as a man in a dream sees one.
Because the mass of pure consciousness is present everywhere, even the man in a dream is its work. Just as he instantly creates things, the soul too, even now, carries a body in the same way.
Thinking, I am eternal, unseen, I am the Person, it gives itself that name. Through this, at once, it becomes the first Person, well known by that name.
Thus, in one creation, he is first, and then becomes Sadashiva. In another creation he is called Vishnu, and in another, the Grandfather Brahma, born from a navel.
pitāmahaḥ sa kasmiṃścitkasmiṃścidapi cetaraḥ| sa ca saṃkalpapuruṣaḥ saṃkalpānmūrtimāsthitaḥ || 6 ||
In some creation he is the Grandfather Brahma, and in some other he is someone else again. He is the Person made of will, and through will alone he takes on a form.
puṣṭaḥ prathamasaṅkalpastāṃ manomūrtimāsthitaḥ| yadyathā kalpayatyāśu tattathānubhavaty alam || 7 ||
He is the first act of will, now grown full, and he takes on that form made of mind. Whatever he quickly imagines, and however he imagines it, that he fully experiences, exactly so.
tattvasadrūpamakhilaṃ śūnyavetālako yathā| bhramadṛṣṭyā tu sadrūpamityahaṃtā jagadgatiḥ || 8 ||
This whole world, which looks like a real, true thing, is like a ghost in empty space. Only to eyes confused by illusion does it look real. This sense of I is the way the world goes.
draṣṭādipuruṣastvevaṃ svayaṃ saṃpadyate hi yaḥ| sa nimeṣaṃ prati vyoma samudetyatha nīyate || 9 ||
This Person, who becomes the seer and all that follows, comes into being by himself in this way. With every blink of an eye, he rises up into the sky, and then is carried off.
Some of these are seen by one another, because their inner tendencies run alike. Some are never seen by each other at all, though the one true, seeing self sees them all.
World after world seems to arise everywhere, but none of them truly comes to be in the real. In the highest space, they are, of themselves, nothing but that space.
svayaṃ ca sadasadrūpā līyante svapnaśailavatsargairna deśa ākrānto na ca kālo na kartṛtā || 14 ||
Being themselves both real and unreal, they melt away like a mountain seen in a dream. These creations occupy no true place, no true time, and involve no true doer.
na caite tatsvarūpā vā na kalpyaṃ nāpi ca kṣaṇaḥna cedaṃ jāyate kiṃcinna ca kiṃcana naśyati || 15 ||
These are not truly of that real nature, nor can they even be grasped as real for a single moment. Nothing here is ever truly born, and nothing ever truly dies.
sarvaṃ saṃkalparūpeṇa ciccmatkurute citi | svapnapattnanirmāṇapātotpātanavajjagat || 16 ||
Consciousness itself, taking the form of will, conjures up everything within itself, as consciousness. The world is like a city built and torn down in a dream.
Even a thing that place and time seem to touch, they do not really touch it — the real world, just as it is, is exactly the same. And through the Meru-mountain of a single thought, what is untouched can look as if it is touched.
Just as place and time become as vast as they become, the real world too comes about in just the same way — exactly as the one who does everything wills it.
Everything from Rudra down to a blade of grass comes into being moment by moment. Some are as small as the tiniest speck; others are a little bigger, like a small particle.
eṣa eva kramasteṣāṃ sati vā'sati sargake | asyāḥ saṃsāramāyāyā evaṃbhūtārthabhāvanāt || 22 ||
This is exactly the order in which they come about, whether this creation is real or not — because the illusion of the world is imagined to be a real thing exactly like this.
Through practice, when all sense of difference dies down, one reaches the auspicious state, Shiva. The highest awareness itself lasts only half of one hundredth of the time of a single blink.
If, by its own nature, this awareness rolls about like this, then this very restlessness appears. But that same awareness, whose nature is knowing, truly rests in itself, like the space that seems shut inside a stone.
tadanādyavabhāsātma brahmaśabdena gīyateasminprauḍhiṃ gate sarge mahāciddyotanaṃ na ca || 25 ||
That whose shining has no beginning is called by the name Brahman. And even when this creation grows to its fullness, the great awareness does not shine out any more than before.
A tiny, atom-sized share of unreal direction, place and time has joined together and come to each living being, through the way the gross elements and their subtle essences roll into one another.
Dear one, deer, plants, insects, gods, demons and all the rest come to be within that one thing which is eternal, vast, endless and firm — they stand strung together like a garland.
sadasadgrathitaṃ viśvaṃ viśvage viśvakarmaṇi | na taddūre na nikaṭe nordhve nādho na tena me | na pūrvaṃ nādya na prātarnā sannāsanna madhyamam || 28 ||
The universe, woven out of what is and what is not, lives in that one who fills everything and does everything. That one is not far and not near, not above and not below, and is not mine either. That one is not the past, not today, not tomorrow morning; not something that is, not something that is not, and not something in between.
anubhavakalanāmṛte'sya mātā bhavati na sarvavikalpaneṣvasatsu | phaladuruvibhavā pramāṇamālā sthitimupayāti na vāriṇīva vahniḥ || 29 ||
Only through direct experience can this reality truly be known — not through any of the unreal alternatives the mind imagines. Real proof, which bears great fruit, cannot take a firm place in what is unreal, just as fire cannot stay alight in water.
Sri Vasishtha said: After saying this, Nilakantha, the blue-throated god, released his handful of cupped flowers onto me, and crossed the hollow of the sky together with his company.
When Umesha, lord of the three worlds, had left, I stood still for a moment. Then, after first remembering, I, with a fresh and pure mind, took up again the worship of my chosen god — the very worship that, in my tranquility, I had wished to give up.
