śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | mano buddhirahaṃkāra indriyādi tathānagha | acetyacinmayaṃ sarvaṃ kva te jīvādayaḥ sthitāḥ || 1 ||
Sri Vasishtha said: Rama, the mind, the intellect, the ego, the senses and the rest - all of this is unconscious, made only of matter. Then where do the individual soul and the rest actually stand?
It is the one Self alone, the great Self, that gives rise to this diversity - just as it is the one moon alone that appears as many, through a diseased eye, through water, through a vessel, and through mirrors.
Know this, Rama: when folly wastes away, the mind is struck down together with all its kin, the way the sky's dullness clears easily once the cloud in it has melted away.
When the mind reaches the state of no-mind, the confusion of its latent desires wastes away - like the pearls of a necklace coming apart when the thread is cut, Rama.
The restlessness of your beautiful eyes, shaped like fresh lotuses, stayed even when your folly had calmed - like a lake that goes on stirring in the wind.
sāmānye ca lagantyeva jane kulagurorgiraḥ | atyudāramatau rāma na laganti kathaṃ tvayi || 11 ||
Even in an ordinary person, the words of the family guru do take hold - so how, Rama, could they fail to take hold in you, whose mind is so much greater and nobler?
Rama, we have always been the family teachers of you and your whole line of Raghu kings. Let this good word I have spoken be quickly held in your heart like a necklace, Rama.
