Sri Vasishtha said: Then, in a moment, Hara, like a pond of Gauri's lotuses, turned toward my awakening and took on, of his own accord, an outward blossoming.
Ishvara said: O sage, call forth deep reflection, and quickly come to know your own being alone. Do not grasp at what is meaningless as if it held meaning - it only trembles, the way the wind trembles.
draṣṭavyamihayatkiñcittaddṛṣṭaṃ kiṃ samaṃ bhramaiḥ na hi heyaṃ upādeyaṃ ceha paśyāmi tadvidaḥ || 4 ||
Whatever here can be seen, I have already seen it - what is it but the same as an illusion? Indeed I see nothing here to reject and nothing to take up, O knower of truth.
Either quickly turn to this state of seeing the outside world, so as to know what is outside - or else settle into it, and listen to what I have told you. What is the use of sitting there in silence?
Saying this, the trident-bearer said: do not turn into only the mind that knows the outer world. It is the breath that makes this body, this house, shake like a machine.
Once the breath is gone, the body gives up all its movement and stands still like a mute thing. The power that moves and cleans is one power; the power that feels and knows is consciousness.
That consciousness, even when it takes on a shape, stays as clear as open space - real existence alone is the reason for this. The breath and the body die when they part from each other, and the wind dies with them too.
The self that is pure consciousness stays as clear as open space and never dies - illusion has no hold on it. It is only inside the body made of mind and breath that this thing called mind seems to be born.
A reflection appears only in a mirror that is bright and without stain. A thing may stand right in front of it and truly exist, but without the mirror's power to reflect, no image shows.
Just as no reflection shows in a mirror covered with dirt, O chief of sages, so too nothing shows in a body once its breath has left, even though the body is still there.
Consciousness reaches everywhere, but it shows itself as movement and the like only where awareness swells up in a body. Consciousness free even of this taint of awareness is alone the highest good.
vidurdevaṃ tadābhāsaṃ sarvasattārthadaṃ tathā | sa hariḥ sa śivaḥ so'jaḥ sa brahmā sa sureśvaraḥ || 14 ||
The wise know this as God - the shining likeness of that, and also as the one who gives being and meaning to everything that exists. He is Hari, he is Shiva, he is the Unborn One, he is Brahma, he is the lord of the gods.
anilānalacandrārkavapuḥ sa parameśvaraḥ | sa eṣa sarvago hyātmā citkhaniścetanaḥ smṛtaḥ || 15 ||
That highest Lord has wind, fire, the moon and the sun as his body. He alone is this self that reaches everywhere - known as the one who is aware, the very source of consciousness.
He is the ruler of the gods, the one who upholds the gods, the maker of all, the god of gods, the lord of the sky. About this joy pouring out of the great consciousness, no one is truly confused.
ye nāma te jagatyete brahmaviṣṇuharādayaḥ | parasmatpariniryātā brahmaviṣṇuharādayaḥ || 17 ||
Those who in this world go by the names Brahma, Vishnu, Hara and the rest - these very ones, Brahma, Vishnu, Hara and the rest, have all come out from the Supreme.
This ignorance is a tangled mass holding the Vedas, the meaning of the Vedas, and the whole web of living beings. Then, from this endless ignorance, spreading out again and again,
taking on place and time as it spreads, what fixed order could anyone give in describing it? So this one is the highest father of Brahma, Vishnu, Hara and the rest.
The Great God is the root and seed of it all, as a tree is the source of its own shoots. Called by the name of all that exists, he is everything, and he alone creates every kind of awareness.
He gives existence to everything; he shines; he deserves reverence and worship, O knower of truth. He can be known directly, like a thing right before the eyes - always present, everywhere.
He is, by his very nature, something felt directly - so he is within everyone's reach. No invocation, no chant, nothing of that kind is needed to reach him.
nityāhūtaḥ sa sarvastho labhyate sarvataḥ svacityāṃ yāṃ vastudaśāṃ yāti tata eva mune śivam || 25 ||
He is always there, as if already called upon, present in all, and can be found on every side. Whatever real state one's own awareness reaches - it is from that very state, O sage, that the highest good comes.
Then one attains his true nature - he who comes before every sight of shape, of light, and of the mind; worthy of worship, worthy of bowing to, worthy of praise, worthy of offerings, the lord of the gods.
Know him as the final boundary of everything that can be known, even of the greatest things. Once someone has seen this self, the remover of old age, sorrow and fear, that person, like a roasted seed, never sprouts again.
Among all living beings, you are known as the one who gives freedom from fear, the first one, worthy of worship without any effort. You yourself are that unborn, highest state living within the self - so why do you stay confused, caught up in mere appearances?
