For those who live in a tree like this, the finest of trees, how could misfortune ever come? Tiger among sages, our misfortunes come only from being unsteady.

146.21.14

Sri Vasishtha said: Great-minded one, at the ends of the ages, when the winds of disaster are blowing and the moon and the sun are falling, how do you remain free of all distress?

156.21.15

Bhushunda said: When, at the end of the age, the working order of the world collapses, then, like an ungrateful man deserting a true friend, I leave my nest.

ākāśa eva tiṣṭhāmi vigatākhilakalpanaḥstabdhaprakṛtisarvāṅgo mano nirvāsanaṃ yathā || 16 ||

I stay alone in the open sky, every thought gone, my whole body and nature stilled, like a mind free of all desire.

pratapanti yadādityāḥ śakalīkṛtabhūdharāḥvāruṇīṃ dhāraṇāṃ baddhvā tadā tiṣṭhāmi dhīradhīḥ || 17 ||

When the suns blaze and burn, shattering the mountains to pieces, then, holding fast to the meditation of water, I stay calm and steady-minded.

When the world, with Meru and everything else dissolved away, turns into a single ocean, then, holding fast to the meditation of wind, my mind stays unmoved in that flood.

brahmāṇḍapāramāsādya tattvānte vimale padesuṣuptāvasthayā tāvattiṣṭhāmyacalarūpayā || 20 ||

Having reached beyond the cosmic egg, at the far end of all the elements, in that pure state, I stay there without moving, for as long as it lasts, in a state like deep dreamless sleep.

Until the lotus-born one again takes up the work of creation, I go there, enter the cosmic egg, and live in that home of birds.

226.21.22

Sri Vasishtha said: King of birds, you remain unbroken through your states of concentration like this at the ends of the ages — so why do other yogis not remain this way?

236.21.23

Bhushunda said: Brahmin, this is destiny, the power of the supreme lord, and it cannot be crossed. Being what I am, I must be this way; being what they are, others must be that way.

246.21.24

na śakyate tolayitumavaśyaṃ bhavitavyatā | yadyathā tattathaitaddhi svabhāvasyaiva niścayaḥ || 24 ||

What is bound to happen cannot be weighed or measured. Whatever a thing is, it is exactly that — this alone is the fixed rule of its own nature.

By the power of my own will alone, age after age, again and again, this tree comes into being just like this, on this very mountain peak.

266.21.26

Sri Vasishtha said: You have a life so long it reaches all the way to liberation; you are a foremost guide and teacher; you hold both knowledge and its right use, and you are steady; your mind moves in a way fit for yoga.

276.21.27

You have seen many kinds of great creation come and go. Tell me, good friend, what wonders do you remember in this course of the world?

Garuda before his wings had grown, and the birth of the oceans - these and other such memories belong to the world's very recent past. Even children remember them, dear one - what is there to dwell on in them?

Garuda as the mount, then a bird as the mount; a bird as the mount, then a bull as the mount; a bull as the mount, then Garuda as the mount again - I have known this, having lived through it.
