16.20.1

bhushuṇḍa uvāca | āsītkiccitpurā kalpe jagadyacchiramāsthitam | sanniveśena caitadvadadyāpi ca na dūragam || 1 ||

Bhushunda said: Once, long ago, in a past age, there was a world that lasted a long time; and in how it was arranged, this world too, even today, is not very different from it.

tadetadvṛttamabhyāsādvartamānena varṇitam | mayā munīndra bodhāya prāgjanmasāmyadarśinā || 2 ||

I have told you this happening from my long experience, since I now live in the present, so that you may understand, best of sages - for I have watched world after world come to birth, and have seen how alike they all are.

adya me phalitaṃ puṇyaiścirakālopasaṃbhṛtaiḥ | nirvighnameva paśyāmi yadbhavantaṃ mune tataḥ || 3 ||

Today my merit, gathered over a long time, has come to fruit, sage, for I see you now with nothing standing in the way.

idaṃ nīḍamimāṃ śākhāmahaṃ cāyamayaṃ drumaḥ | adya pāvanatāṃ prāptānyetāni tava darśanāt || 4 ||

This nest, this branch, I myself, and this tree - today all these have become pure through the sight of you.

idamarghyamida pādyaṃ gṛhītvā vihagārpitam | nūnaṃ pāvanatāṃ nītvā śeṣeṇādiśa cāśu bhoḥ || 5 ||

Please take this welcome water and this water for the feet, offered by a bird; you have surely made them pure by taking them - now tell me quickly, sir, what else you wish.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | idam arghyaṃ ca pādyaṃ ca bhūyo dattavati svayam | bhuśuṇḍavihage tasminn idaṃ rāmāham uktavān || 6 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: When Bhushunda the bird had himself offered this welcome water and foot water once again, I said this to him, Rama:

bhrātaraste vihaṅgeśa tādṛksattvā mahādhiyaḥ | iha kasmānna dṛśyante tvamevaiko hi dṛśyase || 7 ||

Your brothers, king of birds - beings just as great, just as wise as you - why are none of them seen here? You alone are seen.

bhuśuṇḍa uvāca | tiṣṭhatāmiha naḥ kālo mahān atigato mune | yugānāṃ paṅktayaḥ kṣīṇā divasānām ivānagha || 8 ||

Bhushunda said: In the time we have stayed here, sage, a great length of time has gone by; rows of ages have passed like rows of days, sinless one.

etāvatātha kālena sarva eva mamānujāḥ | tanūs tṛṇam iva tyaktvā śive pariṇatāḥ pade || 9 ||

In all this time, every one of my younger brothers has dropped his body like a blade of grass, and has passed into the blessed state.

dīrghāyuṣo mahānto'pi santo'pi balino'pi ca | sarva eva nigīryante kālenākalitātmanā || 10 ||

However long-lived, however great, good, or strong they were - all of them are swallowed up by time, whose nature no one can grasp.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | skandhavyūḍhārkaśaśiṣu vahatsvavirataṃ javāt | vātaskandhātivāteṣu kaccittāta na khidyase || 11 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: In the bands of wind that carry the sun and the moon, blowing on and on without a stop, with great speed, in these fierce, strong winds - tell me truly, dear one, does this not trouble you?

dagdhodayāstaśailendravanavyūhai ravēḥ karaiḥ | ciramatyantamāsannaiḥ kaccittāta na khidyase || 12 ||

By the sun's rays that scorch the forests on the mountains of sunrise and sunset, rays that stay so long, so very close to you - surely this does not trouble you, dear one?

indoratha karaiḥ śītaiḥ pāṣāṇīkṛtavāribhiḥ | āsannakarakāpātaiḥ kaccittāta na khidyase || 13 ||

And by the moon's cold rays, that turn water to stone, with hailstones falling so close by - surely this does not trouble you, dear one?

ajasramiha viśrāntaiḥ kalpajīmūtamaṇḍalaiḥ | paraśucchedanīhāraiḥ kaccittāta na khidyase || 14 ||

By the endless banks of doomsday clouds that rest here without a break, and by mist that cuts like an axe - surely this does not trouble you, dear one?

viṣamairjāgataiḥ kṣobhairuccaitarapadasthitaḥ | kathaṃ na kṣobhamāyāti kalpavṛkṣo'yamunnataḥ || 15 ||

Standing in so high a place, facing the world's harsh storms, how does this tall wish-granting tree not shake?

bhushuṇḍa uvāca nirālambāspadā brahman sarvalokāvahelitā tucchēyaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ madhyē vihagajīvikā || 16 ||

Bhushunda said: Brahmin, a bird's life rests on nothing solid; the whole world looks down on it - among all creatures, this life of a bird is the most worthless.

īdṛśēṣu ca bhūtēṣu nirjanēṣu vanēṣu ca kalpitāsthāsthitirdhātrā śūnyē vā vyomavartmani || 17 ||

And for creatures like this, in empty, lonely forests or on the bare path of the sky, the creator has given only an uncertain foothold to stand on.

kathamasyāṃ prabho jātau jātasya cirajīvinaḥ āśāpāśanibaddhasya vihagasya viśokitā || 18 ||

So how, my lord, can a bird born into such a life, living long yet bound by the rope of hope, ever be free from sorrow?

vayaṃ tu bhagavannityamātmasantoṣamāsthitāḥ na kadācana nīrūpe muhyāmo jātavibhramaiḥ || 19 ||

But we, my lord, always stay content within ourselves; before the formless truth, we are never confused by the illusions that arise.

svabhāvamātrasantoṣṭāḥ kaṣṭairmuktā viceṣṭitaiḥ kṣipāmaḥ kevalaṃ kālamasminbrahmannijālaye || 20 ||

Content with just our own nature, free from the troubles that come with restless striving, we simply pass our time here, Brahmin, in this home of our own.

na jīvitānna maraṇātkarmadehasya rodhanam | yathā sthitena tiṣṭhāmastathaivāstaṃgatehitāḥ || 21 ||

Neither life nor death brings an end to this body shaped by our past deeds. Just as we stay the same while it stands, so we stay the same as it sets.

ālokitā lokadaśā dṛṣṭā dṛṣṭāntadṛṣṭayaḥ | nūnaṃ saṃtyaktamasmākaṃ manasā cañcalaṃ vapuḥ || 22 ||

We have seen the ways of the world, and seen example after example of them. Surely our mind has now given up this restless body.

anāratanijāloke nityaṃ cāparitāpini | kalpāgasyopari sadā vedmi kālakalāgatim || 23 ||

By our own steady light, which never stops and never burns, here on this mountain that lasts through the ages, we always know time's passing, down to its smallest piece.

ratnaguccaprakāśākhye brahman kalpalatāgṛhe | prāṇāpānapravāheṇa vedmi kalpamakhāṇḍitam || 24 ||

Here, Brahmin, in this bower of wishing vines, called the glow of a bunch of jewels, we keep count of the whole age, without a break, through the flow of our breath in and out.

avijñātadivārātrau hyasminnuccaiḥ śiloccaye | jānāmi nijayā buddhyā lokakālakramasthitim || 25 ||

On this high, rocky mountain, where day and night cannot be told apart, we know, by our own understanding, the order in which the world and time unfold.

sārāsāraparicchedi bodhādviśrāntimāgatam | nirastacāpalaṃ śāntaṃ susthiraṃ me mune manaḥ || 26 ||

Sage, our mind can tell what is real from what is not, and it has come to rest through understanding. It is free of restlessness now, calm, and steady.

saṃsāravvyavahāroththairāśāpāśairasanmayaiḥ | udgārairiva bhūkāko na vaivaśyaṃ vrajāmyaham || 27 ||

The false chains of desire that come from worldly life do not take hold of us. We are not like a crow gone wild over scraps of food.

paropaśamadharmiṇyā vayamālokśītayā | paśyanto jāgatīṃ māyāṃ dhiyā dhairyaṃ upāgatāḥ || 28 ||

With a mind at deep peace, cool with its own light, we watch the world's illusion, and we stay steady and unafraid.

bhīmāsvapi mahābuddhe daśāsvacalabuddhayaḥ | vinirmalopalākārāḥ saṃprāptāsu yathākramam || 29 ||

Wise one, even when frightening things happen to us one after another, our mind does not waver. It stays like a clean, spotless stone.

iyamārambhasubhagā taralā jāgatī sthitiḥ | bhūyo bhūyaḥ parāmṛṣṭā na ca kiṃca na bādhate || 30 ||

This state of the world looks pleasant only at first, and it never stops shifting. But we have looked at it again and again, and now none of it troubles us at all.

sarvāṇyeva prayāntyeva samāyānti ca vā na vā | bhagavanbhūtajālāni bhayamasmākamatra kim || 31 ||

Lord, all beings, every one of them, come and go, or do not come at all. What is there for us to fear in that?

bhūtajālataraṅgiṇyā viśantyāḥ kālasāgare | vayaṃ saṃsārasaritastataṭasthā apyanādṛtāḥ || 32 ||

This river of the world is made of countless beings, like waves, flowing into the ocean of time. We stand on its bank and pay it no mind.

nojjhāmo na ca gṛhṇīmastiṣṭhāmo neha ca sthitāḥ | mṛdupādā dṛśā kūrā vayamasmindrume sthitāḥ || 33 ||

We do not throw anything away, and we do not hold on to anything either. We stay, but we are not tied down here. Soft-footed and sharp-eyed, we live in this tree.

vītaśokabhayāyāsai stvādṛśaiḥ puruṣottamaiḥ | tuṣṭairanugṛhītāḥ smaḥ saṃsthitā vigatāmayāḥ || 34 ||

Great men like you, free of grief, fear, and tiredness, and pleased with us, have blessed us with their grace. So we stay settled, free of every trouble.

tatastataśca paryastaṃ luṭhitaṃ na ca vṛttiṣu | nāparāmṛṣṭatattvārthamasmākaṃ bhagavanmanaḥ || 35 ||

Lord, our mind does not get pulled this way and that, and it does not get stuck in changing moods. It has truly understood the meaning of the truth.

nirvikāre gatakṣobhe cātmanyupaśamaṃ gate | cittaraṅgāḥ prabuddhāḥ smaḥ parvaṇīva mahābdhayaḥ || 36 ||

The self inside us does not change, has no unrest, and rests in peace. Even so, the waves of our mind still rise up, the way the sea swells at full moon.

bhavadāgamanād brahmannidānīṃ muditāśayāḥ | mandaroddhūtasarvāṅgaḥ kṣīrodo yena tanyate || 37 ||

Brahmin, since you came, our hearts are now full of joy, the way the Ocean of Milk swells all over when Mount Mandara churns it.

nātaḥ parataraṃ kiṃcinmanye kuśalamātmanaḥ | santo yadanugamyante saṃtyaktasakalaiṣaṇāḥ || 38 ||

I think there is nothing better for the self than this: getting to be with good people who have given up wanting anything at all.

āpātamātraramyehyo bhogebhyaḥ kimavāpyate | satsaṅgacintāmaṇitaḥ sarvasāramavāpyate || 39 ||

What do we really get from pleasures that feel sweet only for a moment? From the company of good people, a wishing-jewel, we get everything that truly matters.

406.20.40

snigdhagambhīramasṛṇamadhurodāradhīravāk | trailokyapadmakośe'smiṃstvamekaḥ ṣaṭpadāyase || 40 ||

Your voice is warm, deep, smooth, sweet, generous, and calm. In this cup of the lotus that is the three worlds, you alone are the bee.

Even though I had already reached the highest self, I think my birth here, today, has still borne fruit, because seeing you has quieted whatever wrong I had done. Good one, the company of the good truly drives away every fear.
