Sri Rama said: Brahmin, through the working of complete knowledge, my desires have begun to melt away, and I have surely come to rest in the state of one who is free while still alive.
By stopping the movement of the breath, when desires melt away, tell me, Brahmin, how does one come to rest in the state of one who is free while alive?
Sri Vasishtha said: The method for crossing over this world is called by the name yoga. Know that it is of two kinds, and both have the nature of calming the mind.
Sri Rama said: Of these two, which is the better one — the one that is easy and free of suffering, so that once it is simply understood, no disturbance troubles a person again?
Sri Vasishtha said: Although both kinds are called by the name yoga, still, in common use, that name has come to mean above all the practice joined with the breath.
In the work of crossing over this world, one way is yoga, and the other is knowledge. These two means alone are said to be equal, and both give the very same result.
For some people, yoga is hard to achieve; for others, a settled and sure knowledge is hard to achieve. But for me, good man, a settled knowledge is what I favor, because it alone is easy to achieve.
Because yoga must be gained through concentration, the right posture, a fitting place, and such conditions, it does not become easy. And any wavering in these is not good at all.
Indeed, the scriptures speak of only two ways, best of the Raghus — knowledge and yoga. Of these, the knowledge I have described to you sits within you, and it is spotless about what is to be known.
This yoga is known through the breath moving in and out; its seat is firm within the body's cave. It gives endless powers, good man, and it gives understanding too. Listen.
O prince, once you reach, by stilling the movement of the breath at your mouth, a steady state with your mind fixed on the imperishable, then, deeply settled here through this method of yoga, you will dwell in the highest state, where even speech falls silent.
