Vasishtha said: Just as a Brahmin, neglecting his own nature, gradually accepts the status of a Shudra due to his wickedness, similarly, the Supreme Lord accepts the state of a living being.
yatkaroṣi yadaśnāsi yajjuhoṣi dadāsi yatna kartāsi na bhoktāsi tatra muktamatiḥ śamī || 12 ||
Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you sacrifice, whatever you give, whatever effort you make, you are not the enjoyer of the results. The mind is free from attachment.
santo'tītaṃ na śocanti bhaviṣyaccintayanti novartamānaṃ ca gṛhṇanti karma prāptamakhaṇḍitam || 13 ||
The wise do not grieve for the past, do not worry about the future, and do not cling to the present. They accept the actions that come to them without fragmentation.
Know that the mind, which is of the nature of one's own resolve and exists as long as the worldly existence, is the subtle form of the soul, beyond the gross.
Know that the supreme form, which is beyond beginning and end, is the truth, pure consciousness, without any differentiation. This is the third form, the universal form.
Sri Vasiṣṭha said: Abandoning the sense of 'I' and 'mine', as well as the concepts of existence and non-existence, that which is unattached, equanimous, pure, and established is called the fourth state.
That which is pure, equanimous, and peaceful is the state of a liberated being in life. This witnessing state in worldly activities is called the moment of the fourth state.
naitajjāgranna ca svapnaṃ saṃkalpānāmasaṃbhavātsuṣuptabhāvo nāpyetadabhāvājjaḍatā sthiteḥ || 25 ||
This is neither the waking state nor the dream state, nor is it the state of deep sleep due to the absence of mental constructs. It is not even inertness due to the absence of this state.
nirvikalpā hi citturyaṃ tadevāstīha netaratjāgratsvapnasuṣuptākhyaṃ trayaṃ rūpaṃ hi cetasaḥ || 36 ||
Indeed, the mind is without distinctions, and that alone exists here, not anything else. The three states of waking, dreaming, and deep sleep are the forms of the mind.
ghoraṃ śāntaṃ ca mūḍhaṃ ca ātmacittamihāsthitamghoraṃ jāgranmayaṃ cittaṃ śāntaṃ svapnamayaṃ sthitam || 37 ||
The mind, which is the self, is established here as terrible, peaceful, and dull. The terrible mind is in the waking state, the peaceful mind is in the dreaming state, and the dull mind is in the deep sleep state.
mūḍhaṃ suṣuptabhāvasthaṃ tribhirhīnaṃ mṛtaṃ bhavetyacca cittaṃ mṛtaṃ tatra sattvamekaṃ sthitaṃ samamtadeva yoginaḥ sarve yatnātsaṃpādayanti hi || 38 ||
The dull mind in the state of deep sleep is devoid of the three states and is considered dead. And the mind that is dead there, the pure existence alone remains. This is what all yogis strive to attain with effort.
Free from all mental constructs, abide in the fourth state, the pure self. Those who are established there are always good and liberated. These great sages are peaceful.
