Nirvāṇa I, Chapter 1निर्वाण प्रकरण · सर्ग १

श्रीवाल्मीकिरुवाच । उपशमप्रकरणादनन्तरमिदं श्रृणु । त्वं निर्वाणप्रकरणं ज्ञातं निर्वाणदायि यत् ॥ १ ॥

śrīvālmīkiruvāca | upaśamaprakaraṇādanantaramidaṃ śrṇu | tvaṃ nirvāṇaprakaraṇaṃ jñātaṃ nirvāṇadāyi yat || 1 ||

Sri Valmiki said: Listen now to this, which follows directly after the Book of Peace. This is the Book of Liberation, and it grants liberation to the one who knows it.

श्री वाल्मीकि ने कहा: अब यह सुनो, जो शांति-प्रकरण के ठीक बाद आता है। यह मुक्ति का प्रकरण है, और इसे जान लेने से मुक्ति मिल जाती है।

कथयत्येवमुद्दामवचने मुनिनायके । श्रवणैकरसे मौनस्थिते राजकुमारके ॥ २ ॥

kathayatyevamuddāmavacane munināyake | śravaṇaikarase maunasthite rājakumārake || 2 ||

As the great sage went on speaking like this, his words flowing freely, the young prince sat in silence, giving himself wholly to listening.

जब महान ऋषि इस तरह बोलते चले जा रहे थे, उनके शब्द खुलकर बह रहे थे, तब युवा राजकुमार चुपचाप बैठा था, पूरी तरह सुनने में डूबा हुआ।

मुनिवागर्थनिक्षिप्तमनस्यस्ततपःक्रिये । राजलोके गतस्पन्दे चित्रार्पित इव स्थिते ॥ ३ ॥

munivāgarthanikṣiptamanasyastatapḥkriye | rājaloke gataspande citrārpite iva sthite || 3 ||

And all the people gathered in the king's court, their minds fixed on the meaning of the sage's words, had stopped every other activity; they sat motionless, still as a painted picture.

और राजसभा में बैठे सभी लोग, अपना मन मुनि के शब्दों के अर्थ पर टिकाए हुए, हर दूसरा काम छोड़ चुके थे; वे बिना हिले-डुले, मानो किसी चित्र में बने हों, वैसे बैठे थे।

वसिष्ठवचसामर्थं विचारयति सादरम् । लसदङ्गुलिभङ्गेन मुनिसार्थे स्फुरद्भुवि ॥ ४ ॥

vasiṣṭhavacasāmarthaṃ vicārayati sādaram | lasadaṅgulibhaṅgena munisārthe sphuradbhuv || 4 ||

That whole company of sages, seated on the shining ground, sat pondering the meaning of Vasishtha's words with deep respect, their fingers moving in a graceful, glinting way.

ऋषियों की वह पूरी मंडली, उस चमकती हुई भूमि पर बैठी हुई, वसिष्ठ के शब्दों के अर्थ पर पूरे आदर से विचार कर रही थी, उनकी उंगलियां हल्के-हल्के, चमकते हुए ढंग से हिल रही थीं।

विस्मयालोकनोल्लासप्रोत्फुल्लनयनालिनि । पुरन्ध्रिवर्गे गम्भीरतरुमञ्जरितां गते ॥ ५ ॥

vismayālokanollāsaprotphullanayanālini | purandhrivarge gambhīratarumañjaritāṃ gate || 5 ||

And the row of women there, their eyes wide open and sparkling with the joy of watching in wonder, looked just like a tall, stately tree that had burst into full blossom.

और वहां बैठी स्त्रियों की पंक्ति, अचरज से देखने के आनंद में उनकी आंखें पूरी तरह खुली और चमक रही थीं, बिल्कुल किसी ऊंचे, भारी वृक्ष की तरह लग रही थीं जो पूरी तरह फूलों से लद गया हो।

खे वासरचतुर्भागदेशे दिनकरे स्थिते किंचिज्ज्ञानोदयात्सौम्ये किंचिच्छममुपेयुषि ॥ ६ ॥

khe vāsaracaturbhāgadeśe dinakare sthite kiñcijjñānodayātsaumye kiñciśśamamupeyuṣi || 6 ||

By then the sun stood in the sky at the point of the day's last quarter, grown gentle as though a little wisdom had dawned in it, as though it too had found a little peace.

तब तक सूरज आकाश में दिन के आखिरी पहर की जगह पर आ चुका था, वह इस तरह नरम पड़ गया था मानो उसमें थोड़ा ज्ञान उदय हो गया हो, मानो उसे भी थोड़ी शांति मिल गई हो।

श्रवणायेव संशान्ते वितानस्पन्दमालिते मौनं मरुति मन्दारमधुरामोददायिनि ॥ ७ ॥

śravaṇāyeva saṃśānte vitānaspandamālite maunaṃ maruti mandāramadhurāmodadāyini || 7 ||

And the wind fell completely still, as if to listen, barely stirring the canopy above, breathing out the sweet fragrance of mandara flowers.

और हवा पूरी तरह थम गई, मानो सुनने के लिए, ऊपर लगे शामियाने को बस हल्का सा हिलाते हुए, मंदार के फूलों की मीठी खुशबू फैलाते हुए।

पुष्पदामसुषुप्तासु महाभ्रमरपंक्तिषु ज्ञातज्ञेयतया नूनं सम्यग्ध्यानवतीष्विव ॥ ८ ॥

puṣpadāmasuṣuptāsu mahābhramarapaṃktiṣu jñātajñeyatayā nūnaṃ samyagdhyānavatīṣviva || 8 ||

The long rows of bees, asleep on garlands of flowers, looked exactly like those who, having known all there is to know, now sit deep in true meditation.

फूलों की मालाओं पर सोए हुए भौंरों की लंबी पंक्तियां बिल्कुल वैसी लग रही थीं जैसे कोई व्यक्ति सब कुछ जान लेने के बाद गहरे ध्यान में डूबा बैठा हो।

मुक्ताजालकलापान्तर्गतास्वन्तरभूमिषु कचत्यपगतस्पन्दं तोये श्रोतुमिवास्थिते ॥ ९ ॥

muktājālakalāpāntargatāsvantarbhūmiṣu kacatyapagataspandaṃ toye śrotumivāsthite || 9 ||

And the water in the inner courtyard, gleaming within its spread of pearl-like drops, had grown perfectly still, as though it too stood there only to listen.

और भीतरी आंगन का पानी, मोतियों जैसी बूंदों के जाल के बीच चमकता हुआ, पूरी तरह स्थिर हो गया था, मानो वह भी बस सुनने के लिए वहां खड़ा हो।

गृहान्तरं प्रविष्टेषु गवाक्षे दूरमंशुषु विश्रामार्थमिवादीर्घं नभःपान्थेषु शीतलम् ॥ १० ॥

gṛhāntaraṃ praviṣṭeṣu gavākṣe dūramṃśuṣu viśrāmārthamivādīrghaṃ nabhaḥpāntheṣu śītalam || 10 ||

The rays of sunlight, travelers of the sky come from far away, slipped through the window into the room, cool now, as if pausing there a while to rest.

सूरज की किरणें, जो दूर आकाश की यात्री थीं, खिड़की से होकर कमरे के भीतर आ गईं, अब ठंडी पड़ चुकी थीं, मानो कुछ देर वहां आराम करने रुकी हों।

मुक्ताजालप्रभाजालभस्मनोद्धूलितात्मनि । शंसतीव शमं शाम्यद्दिनदेहे दिवातपे ॥ ११ ॥

muktājālaprabhājālabhasmanoddhūlitātmani | śaṃsatīva śamaṃ śāmyaddinadehe divātape || 11 ||

And the heat of day, its brightness now powdered like ash with a web of pearly light, seemed to speak of peace, as the body of the day itself grew calm.

और दिन की धूप, जिसकी चमक अब मोतियों जैसी रोशनी की जाली से मानो राख से ढकी हुई थी, जैसे शांति की बात कह रही थी, क्योंकि दिन का पूरा शरीर ही शांत पड़ता जा रहा था।

करे लीलासरोजेषु शेखरेषु च भूभृताम् । श्रुत्वा सुरसमामोदादवृत्तिषु मनस्स्विव ॥ १२ ॥

kare līlāsarojeṣu śekhareṣu ca bhūbhṛtām | śrutvā surasamāmōdādavṛttiṣu manassviva || 12 ||

It seemed to settle on hands holding lotuses in play, and on the crowned heads of kings, as if on minds that had grown still on hearing him, filled with a joy like that of the gods.

वह मानो खेल-खेल में कमल पकड़े हाथों पर और राजाओं के मुकुट पहने सिरों पर जा टिकी, मानो उन मनों पर, जो उसे सुनकर शांत हो गए थे और देवताओं जैसे आनंद से भर गए थे।

बालकेष्वज्ञलोकेषु लीलापक्षिषु सादरम् । भोजनार्थं वधूलोकमुपरुन्धत्स्वनारतम् ॥ १३ ॥

bālakeṣvajñalokeṣu līlāpakṣiṣu sādaram | bhojanārthaṃ vadhūlokamuparundhatsvanāratam || 13 ||

It reached the innocent children too, and the pet birds that kept the young women endlessly and eagerly busy with feeding them.

वह मासूम बच्चों तक भी पहुंची, और उन पालतू पक्षियों तक भी जो जवान स्त्रियों को बार-बार, उत्सुकता से, खिलाने में व्यस्त रखते थे।

भ्रमद्भ्रमरपक्षोत्थवातधूतरजस्यलम् । कौमुदे परिविश्रान्ते चामरेष्वक्षिपक्ष्मसु ॥ १४ ॥

bhramadbhramarapakṣotthavātadhūtarajasyalam | kaumude pariviśrānte cāmareṣvakṣipakṣmasu || 14 ||

Thick now with the pollen that the whirling wings of bees had stirred into the air, it settled upon fluttering eyelashes that moved like fans, once the water-lily had folded fully to rest.

भौंरों के मंडराते पंखों से हवा में उड़े पराग-कणों से भरी हुई, वह पंखे जैसी थरथराती पलकों पर जा टिकी, जब कुमुदिनी पूरी तरह मुंद चुकी थी।

रश्मिष्वगगुहोन्मुक्तच्छायाजालभयादिव । गवाक्षादिष्विवोड्डीय प्रविष्टेषु गृहान्तरम् ॥ १५ ॥

raśmiṣvagaguhonmuktacchāyājālabhayādiva | gavākṣādiṣvivōḍḍīya praviṣṭeṣu gṛhāntaram || 15 ||

The rays of light, as though frightened by the web of shadows spilling out from the mountain caves, seemed to fly in through the windows and take shelter inside the house.

प्रकाश की किरणें, मानो पहाड़ की गुफाओं से फैलती परछाइयों के जाल से डरकर, खिड़कियों से उड़कर घर के भीतर शरण लेती हुई जान पड़ीं।

आसीद्दिनचतुर्भागसत्तावेदनतत्परः । भेरीपटहशङ्खानां दिङ्मुखापूरको ध्वनिः ॥ १६ ॥

āsīddinacaturbhāgasattāvedanatatparaḥ | bherīpaṭahaśaṅkhānāṃ diṅmukhāpūrako dhvaniḥ || 16 ||

Then there arose the sound of kettledrums, drums, and conch shells, filling every direction, announcing that the day's fourth quarter had come.

तभी नगाड़ों, ढोलों और शंखों की आवाज़ उठी, जो हर दिशा में फैल गई, यह बताते हुए कि दिन का चौथा पहर आ चुका है।

तेन तत्तारमप्याशु वचोऽन्तर्धानमाययौ । मौनं जलदनादेन मायूर इव निस्वनः ॥ १७ ॥

tena tattāramapyāśu vaco'ntardhānamāyayau | maunaṃ jaladanādena māyūra iva nisvanaḥ || 17 ||

Because of that sound, Vasishtha's speech, loud as it was, quickly fell silent, like a peacock's cry drowned out by the roar of thunderclouds.

उस आवाज़ के कारण वसिष्ठ के शब्द, जो ऊंचे स्वर में थे, जल्दी ही थम गए, जैसे बादलों की गड़गड़ाहट में मोर की पुकार दब जाती है।

आक्षुब्धा क्षुब्धपक्षालिः पञ्जरस्था खगावली । भूकम्पे तरसाऽऽतालीपल्लवेव वनावली ॥ १८ ॥

ākṣubdhā kṣubdhapakṣāliḥ pañjarasthā khagāvalī | bhūkampe tarasā'tālīpallaveva vanāvalī || 18 ||

The caged birds grew agitated, their wings fluttering wildly in rows, the way a whole forest shakes violently, like palm-fronds, in an earthquake.

पिंजरों में बंद पक्षी बेचैन हो उठे, उनके पंखों की पंक्तियां बुरी तरह फड़फड़ाने लगीं, ठीक जैसे भूकंप में पूरा जंगल ताड़-पत्तों की तरह जोर से हिलने लगता है।

आययुर्भयवित्रस्ता बाला धात्रीकुचान्तरम् । सारवं प्रावृषीवाब्दाः प्रोन्नतं श्रृङ्गकोटरम् ॥ १९ ॥

āyayurbhayavitrastā bālā dhātrīkucāntaram | sāravaṃ prāvṛṣīvābdāḥ pronnataṃ śrṛṅgakoṭaram || 19 ||

The children, terrified, ran to hide against their nurses' breasts, like thundering rain-clouds in the monsoon rushing to a high mountain's hollow peak.

डरे हुए बच्चे भागकर अपनी धाय माताओं की छाती से जा लिपटे, जैसे वर्षा ऋतु में गरजते बादल किसी ऊंचे पर्वत की खोखली चोटी की ओर दौड़ पड़ते हैं।

उत्तस्थुरवतंसेभ्यो भूभृतां भ्रमरस्रजः । ईषत्करालवाहाभ्यः सरिद्भ्योऽम्बुकणा इव ॥ २० ॥

uttasthuravataṃsebhyo bhūbhṛtāṃ bhramarasrajaḥ | īṣatkarālavāhābhyaḥ saridbhyo'mbukaṇā iva || 20 ||

The garlands of bees flew up from the ear-ornaments of the kings, like droplets of spray rising off rivers whose currents had grown a little wild.

राजाओं के कानों के आभूषणों से भौंरों की मालाएं उड़ चलीं, जैसे उन नदियों से पानी की बूंदें उठती हैं जिनकी धारा थोड़ी उग्र हो चली हो।

एवं प्रक्षुभिते तस्मिन्गृहे दाशरथे तदा । प्राप्ते वासरवृद्धत्वे शान्तशङ्खस्वने शनैः ॥ २१ ॥

evaṃ prakṣubhite tasmingṛhe dāśarathe tadā | prāpte vāsaravṛddhatve śāntaśaṅkhasvane śanaiḥ || 21 ||

So it was, in Rama's hall, with everything thrown into commotion, that the day advanced further and the sound of the conch slowly died away.

इस तरह राम के उस सभा-भवन में जब सब कुछ हलचल में था, तब दिन और आगे बढ़ चुका था और शंख की आवाज़ धीरे-धीरे शांत हो गई थी।

संहरन्प्रस्तुतं वस्तु वचो मधुरवृत्तिमत् । उवाच मुनिशार्दूलः सभामध्ये रघूद्वहम् ॥ २२ ॥

saṃharanprastutaṃ vastu vaco madhuravṛttimat | uvāca muniśārdūlaḥ sabhāmadhye raghūdvaham || 22 ||

Then that tiger among sages, gathering up the matter at hand into words of sweet cadence, spoke there in the middle of the assembly, to Rama.

तब ऋषियों में श्रेष्ठ उस मुनि ने, जिस बात पर चर्चा चल रही थी उसे समेटते हुए, मीठे और सधे शब्दों में, सभा के बीच राम से कहा।

राघवानघ वाग्जालं मयैतत्प्रविसारितम् । तेन चित्तखगं बद्ध्वा क्रोडीकृत्यात्मतां नय ॥ २३ ॥

rāghavānagha vāgjālaṃ mayaitatpravisāritam | tena cittakhagaṃ baddhvā kroḍīkṛtyātmatāṃ naya || 23 ||

Rama, sinless one, I have spread out this net of words. Use it to catch the bird that is your mind, hold it close, and lead it into oneness with the Self.

हे राघव, हे निष्पाप, मैंने यह शब्दों का जाल फैलाया है। इससे अपने मन रूपी पक्षी को पकड़ो, उसे गोद में लेकर अपने आत्मा के साथ एक कर दो।

कच्चिद्गृहीतो भवता मद्गिरामर्थ ईदृशः । त्यक्त्वा दुर्बोधमक्षीणो हंसेनेवाम्भसः पयः ॥ २४ ॥

kaccidgṛhīto bhavatā madgirāmartha īdṛśaḥ | tyaktvā durbodhamakṣīṇo haṃsenevāmbhasaḥ payaḥ || 24 ||

I trust you have grasped the sense of my words in this way, taking it whole and setting aside what is hard to understand, as a swan takes only the milk from the water.

मुझे उम्मीद है कि तुमने मेरी बातों का मतलब इसी तरह समझा है, जो बात समझने में मुश्किल थी उसे छोड़कर, बाकी सारी बात को अपना लिया है, जैसे हंस पानी में से सिर्फ दूध निकाल लेता है।

विचार्यैतदशेषेण स्वधियैवं पुनःपुनः । अनेनैव पथा साधो गन्तव्यं भवताधुना ॥ २५ ॥

vicāryaitadśeṣeṇa svadhiyaivaṃ punaḥpunaḥ | anenaiva pathā sādho gantavyaṃ bhavatādhunā || 25 ||

Think this over completely with your own mind, again and again, in just this way. Good man, this is the very path you must walk now.

अपने मन से इस बात को बार-बार, पूरी तरह सोचो। हे अच्छे इंसान, अब तुम्हें बस इसी रास्ते पर चलना है।

अनयैव धिया राम विहरन्नैव बध्यसे । अन्यथाधः पतस्याशु विन्ध्यखाते यथा गजः ॥ २६ ॥

anayaiva dhiyā rāma viharannaiava badhyase | anyathādhaḥ patasyāśu vindhyakhāte yathā gajaḥ || 26 ||

With this very understanding, Rama, you can move freely in the world and not be bound. Otherwise you will fall down at once, like an elephant into a pit in the Vindhya hills.

हे राम, इसी समझ के साथ जीने से तुम बंधन में नहीं फँसोगे। नहीं तो तुम फौरन नीचे गिर जाओगे, जैसे कोई हाथी विंध्य पहाड़ के गड्ढे में गिर जाता है।

सुगृहीतं धिया राम मद्वचो न करोषि चेत् । तत्पतस्यवटे त्यक्तदीपो वान्धो निशास्विव ॥ २७ ॥

sugṛhītaṃ dhiyā rāma madvaco na karoṣi cet | tatpatasyavāṭe tyaktadīpo vāndho niśāsviv || 27 ||

Rama, if you do not truly take hold of my words with your mind, then you will fall into a pit, like a man who has thrown away his lamp, or a blind man, walking at night.

हे राम, अगर तुमने मेरी बातों को अपने मन से ठीक से नहीं पकड़ा, तो तुम गड्ढे में गिर जाओगे, जैसे रात में दीया फेंक देने वाला आदमी या कोई अंधा आदमी गिर जाता है।

असङ्गेन यथाप्राप्तो व्यवहारोऽस्य सिद्धये । इत्येव शास्त्रसिद्धान्तमादायोदारवान्भव ॥ २८ ॥

asaṅgena yathāprāpto vyavahāro'sya siddhaye | ityeva śāstrasiddhāntamādāyodāravānbhava || 28 ||

Carry on with whatever activity comes to you, without attachment, so as to accomplish this goal. Take up just this conclusion of the scriptures, and be a noble, large-hearted person.

जो भी काम सामने आए उसे बिना किसी मोह के करते जाओ, ताकि यह मकसद पूरा हो सके। शास्त्रों की इसी बात को मानकर बड़े दिल वाले, उदार इंसान बनो।

हे सभ्या हे महाराज रामलक्ष्मणभूमिपाः । सर्व एव भवन्तोऽद्य तावद्व्यापारमाह्निकम् ॥ २९ ॥

he sabyā he mahārāja rāmalakṣmaṇabhūmipāḥ | sarva eva bhavanto'dya tāvadvyāpāramāhnikam || 29 ||

Members of the assembly, great king, Rama and Lakshmana and the other rulers of the earth, all of you, carry out today's daily round of duties.

हे सभा के लोगों, हे महाराज, हे राम, लक्ष्मण और बाकी राजाओं, आप सब आज के दिन के अपने रोज़ के काम कर लीजिए।

कुर्वन्त्वयं हि दिवसः प्रायः परिणताकृतिः । शेषं विचारयिष्यामो विचार्यं प्रातरागताः ॥ ३० ॥

kurvantvayaṃ hi divasaḥ prāyaḥ pariṇatākṛtiḥ | śeṣaṃ vicārayiṣyāmo vicāryaṃ prātarāgatāḥ || 30 ||

This day has almost come to its close, so let it be done now. Tomorrow morning, once we have gathered again, we will think over what is still left to think over.

आज का दिन लगभग खत्म होने को है, इसलिए यह अभी कर लीजिए। जो भी सोचना बाकी है, उस पर हम कल सुबह फिर मिलकर सोचेंगे।

श्रीवाल्मीकिरुवाच । इत्युक्ता मुनिना तेन सा सर्वैव तदा सभा । प्रोत्तस्थौ पद्मवदना सविकासेव पद्मिनी ॥ ३१ ॥

śrīvālmīkiruvāca | ityuktā muninā tena sā sarvaiva tadā sabhā | protastau padmavadanā savikāseva padminī || 31 ||

Sri Valmiki said: When the sage had spoken thus, that whole assembly, its faces like lotuses, then rose up, like a pond of lotuses opening into bloom.

श्री वाल्मीकि ने कहा: मुनि के ऐसा कहने पर, वह पूरी सभा, जिसके सारे चेहरे कमल जैसे थे, तब उठ खड़ी हुई, जैसे कमलों से भरा तालाब खिल उठता है।

राजानः स्तुतराजानः कृतराघववन्दनाः । परिष्टुते वसिष्ठे ते जग्मुरात्मनिवेशनम् ॥ ३२ ॥

rājānaḥ stutarājānaḥ kṛtarāghavavandanāḥ | pariṣṭute vasiṣṭhe te jagmurātmaniveśanam || 32 ||

The kings, those celebrated kings, bowed to Rama, paid their respects to Vasishtha, and then went to their own homes.

वे राजा, वे नामी राजा, राम को प्रणाम करके और वसिष्ठ का आदर करके अपने-अपने घर चले गए।

विश्वामित्रेण सहितो वसिष्ठो गन्तुमाश्रमम् । उत्तस्थावासनाच्छ्रीमान्नमस्कृतनभश्चरः ॥ ३३ ॥

viśvāmitreṇa sahito vasiṣṭho gantumāśramam | uttasthāvāsanācchrīmānnmaskṛtanabhaścaraḥ || 33 ||

Together with Vishvamitra, the glorious Vasishtha rose from his seat to go to his hermitage, honored by the beings who move through the sky.

विश्वामित्र के साथ तेजस्वी वसिष्ठ अपने आश्रम जाने के लिए आसन से उठे, और आकाश में घूमने वाले देवताओं ने उन्हें प्रणाम किया।

दशरथप्रभृतयो राजानो मुनयस्तथा । यथानुरूपं वक्तारमनुगम्य मुनिं चिरम् ॥ ३४ ॥

daśarathaprabhṛtayo rājāno munayastathā | yathānurūpaṃ vaktāramanugamya muniṃ ciram || 34 ||

Dasharatha and the other kings, and the sages as well, each in the manner fitting to them, escorted the sage who had spoken, for a long while.

दशरथ और बाकी राजा, और मुनि लोग भी, अपने-अपने ठीक तरीके से, उस बोलने वाले मुनि के साथ काफी दूर तक गए।

आपृच्छ्य केचिद्गगनं ययुः केचिद्वनान्तरम् । केचिद्राजगृहं सन्तो भृङ्गाः पद्मोत्थिता इव ॥ ३५ ॥

āpṛcchya kecidgaganam yayuḥ kecidvanāntaram | kecidrājagṛhaṃ santo bhṛṅgāḥ padmotthitā iva || 35 ||

Then, having taken leave, some went off into the sky, some into the forest, and some to the royal palace, like bees rising up from a lotus.

फिर विदा लेकर कुछ लोग आकाश में चले गए, कुछ जंगल में चले गए, और कुछ राजमहल की तरफ गए, जैसे भौंरे कमल से उड़कर बिखर जाते हैं।

वसिष्ठपादयोस्त्यक्त्वा पुष्पाञ्जलिमनाविलम् । दारैरनुगतो राजा प्रविवेश गृहान्तरम् ॥ ३६ ॥

vasiṣṭhapādayostyaktvā puṣpāñjalimanāvilam | dārairanugato rājā praviveśa gṛhāntaram || 36 ||

Having placed a clean handful of flowers at Vasishtha's feet, the king, accompanied by his queen, went into the inner chamber of his home.

वसिष्ठ के चरणों में साफ फूलों की अंजलि चढ़ाकर, राजा अपनी रानी के साथ अपने घर के अंदर के कमरे में गए।

रामलक्ष्मणशत्रुघ्नाः प्राप्तस्य स्वाश्रमं गुरोः । अभ्यर्च्य चरणौ भक्त्या त्वाजग्मुर्नृपमन्दिरम् ॥ ३७ ॥

rāmalakṣmaṇaśatrughnāḥ prāptasya svāśramaṃ guroḥ | abhyarcya caraṇau bhaktyā tvājagmurnṛpamandiram || 37 ||

Rama, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna worshipped with devotion the feet of their guru, who had gone to his own hermitage, and then came to the royal palace.

राम, लक्ष्मण और शत्रुघ्न ने अपने गुरु के चरणों की श्रद्धा से पूजा की, जो अपने आश्रम जा चुके थे, और फिर वे राजमहल आए।

सदनानि समासाद्य श्रोतारः सर्व एव ते । सस्नुरानर्चुरभ्येयुर्देवान्विप्रान्पितृंस्तथा ॥ ३८ ॥

sadanāni samāsādya śrotāraḥ sarva eva te | sasnurānarcuhabhyeyurdevānviprānpitṛṃstathā || 38 ||

All those who had listened reached their own homes, bathed, performed worship, and paid their respects to the gods, the brahmins, and the ancestors.

सुनने वाले वे सभी लोग अपने-अपने घर पहुँचकर नहाए, पूजा की, और देवताओं, ब्राह्मणों और पितरों को प्रणाम करने गए।

यथाक्रमं स्वभृत्यान्तैर्विप्राद्यैश्च परिच्छदैः । समं बुभुजिरे भोज्यं वर्णधर्मक्रमोदितम् ॥ ३९ ॥

yathākramaṃ svabhṛtyāntairviprādyaiśca paricchadaiḥ | samaṃ bubhujire bhojyaṃ varṇadharmakramoditam || 39 ||

In due order, together with their whole household, from the brahmins down to their own servants, everyone ate the food prescribed for their class according to the rule of duty.

सही क्रम से, अपने पूरे घर-परिवार के साथ, ब्राह्मणों से लेकर अपने नौकरों तक, सबने अपने-अपने वर्ण के नियम के हिसाब से बना खाना खाया।

अस्तं गते दिनकरे समं दिवसकर्मभिः । अभ्यागते रात्रिकरे समं रजनिकर्मभिः ॥ ४० ॥

astaṃ gate dinakare samaṃ divasakarmabhiḥ | abhyāgate rātrikare samaṃ rajanikarmabhiḥ || 40 ||

The sun set, and with it the day's tasks came to an end. The moon rose, and with it the night's tasks began.

सूरज डूब गया, और उसके साथ दिन के काम खत्म हो गए। चाँद निकल आया, और उसके साथ रात के काम शुरू हो गए।

स्थित्वा तल्पेषु कौशेयशयनेष्वासनेषु च । भूचरा मुनिराजानो राजपुत्रा महर्षयः ॥ ४१ ॥

sthitvā talpeṣu kauśeyaśayaneṣvāsaneṣu ca | bhūcarā munirājāno rājaputrā maharṣayaḥ || 41 ||

The earthbound ones, the royal sages, the princes, and the great seers, then settled themselves on couches, on silken beds, and on seats.

धरती पर रहने वाले वे लोग, यानी राजर्षि, राजकुमार और महर्षि, तब पलंगों पर, रेशमी बिस्तरों पर और आसनों पर बैठ गए।

संसारोत्तरणोपायं वसिष्ठवदनेरितम् । यथावदेकाग्रधियश्चिन्तयामासुरादृताः ॥ ४२ ॥

saṃsārottaraṇopāyaṃ vasiṣṭhavadaneritam | yathāvadekāgradhiyaścintayāmāsurādṛtāḥ || 42 ||

They reflected properly, with focused minds and full respect, on the means of crossing beyond worldly existence that Vasishtha had spoken.

उन्होंने ठीक से, एक ही जगह मन लगाकर और पूरे आदर के साथ, संसार से पार जाने के उस तरीके के बारे में सोचा, जो वसिष्ठ ने बताया था।

ततः प्रहरमात्रेण निद्रामामुद्रिताननाः । उत्स्वप्नसुन्दरीमीयुः पद्मा इव दिनार्थिनः ॥ ४३ ॥

tataḥ praharamātreṇa nidrāmāmudritānanāḥ | utsvapnasundarīmīyuḥ padmā iva dinārthinaḥ || 43 ||

Then, after only one watch of the night, their eyes closed, and they slipped into sleep, that beauty who rises in dreams, like day-lotuses that close up at night, longing for the day.

फिर रात का बस एक पहर बीतने पर, उनकी आँखें बंद हो गईं, और वे उस नींद में चले गए जो सपनों में उठने वाली सुंदरी है, जैसे दिन में खिलने वाले कमल रात में बंद होकर दिन का इंतज़ार करते हैं।

रामलक्ष्मणशत्रुघ्नाः प्रहरत्रयमेव तत् । वासिष्ठमुपदेशं ते चिन्तयामासुरक्षतम् ॥ ४४ ॥

rāmalakṣmaṇaśatrughnāḥ praharatrayameva tat | vāsiṣṭhamupadeśaṃ te cintayāmāsurakṣatam || 44 ||

But Rama, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna spent all three watches of that night pondering Vasishtha's teaching, whole and unbroken.

पर राम, लक्ष्मण और शत्रुघ्न ने उस रात के तीनों पहर वसिष्ठ की पूरी और बिना टूटी हुई शिक्षा के बारे में सोचते हुए बिताए।

प्रहरस्यार्धमात्रं ते तत आमुद्रितेक्षणाः । उत्स्वप्नमाययुर्निद्रां क्षणाद्विद्रावितश्रमाम् ॥ ४५ ॥

praharasyārdhamātraṃ te tat āmudritekṣaṇāḥ | utsvapnamāyayurnidrāṃ kṣaṇādvidrāvitaśramām || 45 ||

Then, for only half a watch, their eyes closed, and they too fell into that dream-born sleep, which drives away all weariness in a moment.

फिर सिर्फ आधे पहर के लिए उनकी आँखें बंद हुईं, और वे भी उस सपनों वाली नींद में चले गए, जो पल भर में सारी थकान मिटा देती है।

इति शुभमनसां विवेकभाजामधिगतसारतयोदिताशयानाम् । अभजत विरतिं तदा त्रियामा मलिननिशाकरवक्रतां जगाम ॥ ४६ ॥

iti śubhamanasāṃ vivekabhājāmadhigatasāratayoditāśayānām | abhajata viratiṃ tadā triyāmā malinaniśākaravakratāṃ jagāma || 46 ||

So it was that for those pure-hearted, discerning ones, whose minds had grown calm after grasping the essence of the teaching, the night then came to its end, while the pale moon sank low and dim toward the horizon.

इस तरह उन शुद्ध दिल वाले, समझदार लोगों के लिए, जिनका मन उस असली बात को समझकर शांत हो गया था, वह रात खत्म हो गई, और धुंधला चाँद झुकता हुआ नीचे की तरफ डूबने लगा।
