tāmasaṅgābhidhāṃ viddhi yāvaddehaṃ ca bhāvinī | tayā yatkriyate karma na tadbandhāya vai punaḥ || 1 ||
For as long as the body lasts, know it by the name non-attachment. It goes on being there, and whatever action is done through it does not bind you again.
tāmasaṅgābhidhāṃ viddhi yāvaddehaṃ ca bhāvinītayā yatkriyate karma na tadbandhāya vai punaḥ || 2 ||
For as long as the body lasts, know it by the name non-attachment. It goes on being there, and whatever action is done through it does not bind you again.
A man whose power to think things through has grown a little, along with dispassion, draws good, pure qualities to himself - the way a bird goes to a lake full of water.
What can the objects of the senses do to a man whose vision is right? What can the workings of the mind do to him, or his worries, or his illnesses?
kva nabhomadhyasaṃsthendurmugdhairmaṇisamudgakaiḥ | mugdhayā'ṅganayā baddho mugdhendīvaraśaṅkayā || 7 ||
Where is the moon that sits in the middle of the sky - ever shut inside a foolish woman's jewel box, tied up there because she mistook it, in her innocence, for a blue lotus?
kva kaṭaprocchaladbhṛṅgamaṇḍalotpalśekharāḥ | mugdhastrīśvāsamadhurairmaśakairmathitā gajāḥ || 8 ||
Where are the great elephants, crowned with wreaths of lotus flowers, with swarms of bees rising off the musth on their temples - ever troubled by mosquitoes as soft as the breath of an innocent woman?
kva prāptabhūtiko dhīro jñātajñeyo vivekavān | ākrāntaḥ kila vikrāntovisayendriyadasyubhiḥ || 11 ||
Where is the steady, wise man, who has attained true greatness, who knows all there is to know, who has discrimination - where is he ever truly overpowered by the thieves that are the senses and their objects?
The objects of the senses are enemies: they carry off the power to reason while it is still young and weak, the way a fierce wind carries off a soft, tender vine whose stem has been cut.
Wicked enemies cannot break even a small piece of discrimination once it has grown mature and strong - just as a gentle breeze cannot shake a mountain so steady that it would stand firm even through the upheaval that ends a whole world age.
Storms of worry can never shake the flowering tree of discrimination once its great trunk cannot be seized by anything and it stands firmly, never unsteady.
Ask again and again, quietly: what is this world, what is this body? Look into it with the eye turned within, whether alone or together with good people.
Discrimination quickly clears away darkness. Through it, the highest state - the one pure reality - is seen, the way a bright lamp lets you see a thing clearly.
Once knowledge becomes clear, whatever there still is to know comes to a complete end - the way, when the sun rises over the earth, a clear, pure light appears.
The inquiry into scripture that awakens a person to the truth of Brahman - that very light of understanding is said to stand as if it were not different from the thing it knows.
The wise know, dear one, that true knowledge is the understanding of the self that comes from inquiry. What is to be known lies within that very knowledge - the way sweetness lies within milk.
The wise know the highest Brahman as the one thing to be known, whose nature is the same everywhere and free of any stain. The moment knowledge reaches it, it becomes clear all by itself.
jñānavānuditānando na kvacitparimajjati| jīvanmukto gatāsaṅgaḥ samrāḍātmeve tiṣṭhati || 24 ||
A man of knowledge, in whom joy has dawned, never drowns in trouble anywhere. Set free while still alive, with no attachment left, he stands like a king who rules over himself.
jñānavānhṛdyaśabdeṣu vīṇāvaṃśaravādiṣu| kāminyāḥ kāntagīteṣu saṃbhogamalineṣu ca || 25 ||
The man of knowledge - amid sounds that please the heart, such as the notes of the lute and the flute, amid the lovely songs of a passionate woman, and amid pleasures soiled by physical union...
kartaryādikarānteṣu gambhīramurajeṣu ca | tatāvanaddhasuṣiracitravādyasvaneṣu ca || 28 ||
And in cymbals and other hand-instruments, in the deep sound of drums, and in the notes of stringed instruments, skin drums, flutes, and other varied instruments.
The man of knowledge, amid the rows of soft young shoots on banana-tree trunks, and amid the vine-slender limbs of the daughters of gods and gandharvas at play in the garden of Nandana.
In none of these, even among things within his own reach, does he, his mind unattached, fix delight in touch anywhere, O Rama; resolute, like a swan on the sands of a desert.
The man of knowledge, amid clustered dates, kadamba fruit, jackfruit, and the like, amid the many kinds of grape, cucumber, walnut, bimba fruit, and citron.
And amid the many kinds of wine, honey-wine, date-liquor, flower-liquor, and spirits, amid curd, milk, ghee, milk-preserve, fresh butter, cooked rice, and the like.
In none of these does he become attached; his body content, his mind unattached, his relish in tasting is like a Brahmin's relish for pieces of his own flesh.
The man of knowledge, amid the abodes of Yama, the Moon, Indra, Rudra, the Sun, and the Wind, and amid the peaks of Meru, Mandara, Kailasa, Sahya, and Dardura.
The glorious one, his mind unattached, does not even wish to see some of these; his mind fully content, self-respecting, silent, and unshaken toward enemies.
The man of knowledge, amid jasmine, coral-tree flowers, red lotus, lotus, and the rest, amid white water-lily, blue lotus, punnaga, ketaki, and agarwood.
And amid the branches of kadamba, mango-blossom, rose-apple, mango, kimshuka, and ashoka trees, amid hibiscus, atimukta creeper, sauvira, bimba, and patala flowers.
aśanisvanaghoṣeṇa nagasphoṭaraveṇa ca | airāvaṇaninādena samyagdhyānī na kampate || 47 ||
By the crash of the thunderbolt, by the sound of a mountain splitting apart, and by the trumpeting of Airavata, the truly meditative man does not tremble.
vahatkrakacakāṣeṇa sitāsidalanena ca | śarāśaninipātena kampate na svarūpataḥ || 48 ||
By the grinding of a saw cutting into him, by the slash of a bright sword, and by the fall of arrows or a thunderbolt, he does not tremble in his true self.
Even while he moves about through all this, he is never troubled and never lifted into joy. His mind stays always free inside, and he goes on doing things only as if he were their doer.
apavitramapathyaṃ ca viṣasiktaṃ malādyapi | bhuktvā jarayati kṣipraṃ klinnaṃ naṣṭaṃ ca mṛṣṭavat || 56 ||
Even if he eats something unclean and unwholesome, filth soaked in poison and the like, he digests it quickly, whether it is rotten or spoiled, as if it were delicious food.
Whether he tastes a bimba fruit, a bitter antidote paste, milk, sugarcane juice, water, or plain grain, the knower of truth keeps his mind unattached and finds them all the same.
maireyamadirākṣīraraktamedorasāsavaiḥ | rūkṣāsthitṛṇakeśāntairna hṛṣyati na kupyati || 58 ||
Whether he is given wine, liquor, milk, blood, fat, bodily fluid, or fermented spirits, or dry bones, straw, and hair, he is neither pleased nor angered.
Toward things whose form is lasting or short-lived, toward things pleasant or unpleasant, he never feels joy or sorrow, because he always keeps a steady, glowing evenness of mind.
Because he has let go of all clinging, because the very way the world exists is not something to rely on, because he has truly known everything there is to know, and because his own mind is free of craving.
But the senses quickly swallow up a man who does not know the truth, who finds no rest, who has not reached his own self, who has no firm footing, just as a deer swallows down a tender shoot.
As he is swept along in the ocean of worldly existence, tossed by the waves of his own desires, crying out in great distress, the sense organs, like sea-monsters, swallow him whole.
But floods of doubt cannot sweep away a man who keeps inquiring, who has reached the good state, whose mind rests in his own self, just as floods of water cannot sweep away a mountain.
sarvasaṃkalpasīmānte viśrāntā ye pare pade| teṣāṃ labdhasvarūpāṇāṃ merureva tṛṇāyate || 66 ||
For those who have come to rest at the far end of all wish and thought, in the highest state, and who have found their own true nature, even Mount Meru feels no bigger than a blade of grass.
For those whose minds have opened out wide, the whole world is like a bit of old dry grass; poison and nectar are the same to them; a single moment and a thousand ages are equal.
Knowing that the world is nothing but pure awareness, these people move about with joyful minds, since the world, being made of that very awareness, lies within them.
In this waking cage of objects, which is nothing but a stirring of pure awareness, what is there to reject and what is there to accept? This is what the knowers of truth hold.
O sinless one, give up any other confusion, all this is nothing but pure awareness. What can this vast form made of awareness give up, and what can it seek?
This shoot that is yet to spring up from the ground is itself nothing but awareness spreading out; in the same way, it already stands present as the sprout of what is real.
ādāvante ca yannāsti vartamāne'pi tasya ca | kaṃcitkālalavaṃ dṛṣṭā sattāsau saṃvido bhramaḥ || 72 ||
What does not exist at the beginning, does not exist at the end, and does not truly exist even now, its being, seen for some brief moment, is nothing but a confusion within awareness.
Knowing this, give up the mind that keeps running after existence and non-existence. Having come to the end of all becoming, be nothing but the light of awareness, free of all attachment.
O mighty-armed one, even while he acts with a mind free of all attachment, pleasure and pain do not stick to him, just as they do not stick to someone lost in a daydream.
gatasaṅgāṃ matiṃ kurvannkurvannapyāṅgayaṣṭibhiḥ | na lipyate sukhairduḥkhairmanorathadaśāsviva || 76 ||
One who keeps the mind free of attachment, even while acting with the limbs of the body, is not touched by pleasure or pain, the way a person is not touched by what happens in a daydream.
gatasaṅgamanā dṛṣṭyā paśyannapi na paśyati | etadanyasthacittatvādvālenāpyanubhūyate || 77 ||
One whose mind has let go of attachment does not truly see, even while looking with the eyes. This happens because the mind is fixed somewhere else, and even a child has felt it.
gatasaṅgamanā jantuḥ paśyannēva na paśyati | na śr̥ṇotyapi śr̥ṇvaṃśca na spṛśatyapi ca spṛśan || 78 ||
A being whose mind has let go of attachment does not see, even while looking; does not hear, even while listening; and does not touch, even while touching.
na jighrtyapi saṃjighrannunmiṣannimiṣannapi | padārthe ca patatyeva balātpatati nāpyayam || 79 ||
Even while smelling, he does not truly smell. His eyes go on opening and closing as ever, and though his eye falls on some object, it does not fall there by force.
Attachment is the cause of wealth. Attachment is the cause of the cycle of the world. Attachment is the cause of hope. Attachment is the cause of misfortune.
The wise call the giving up of attachment liberation. Giving up attachment ends rebirth. Give up your attachment to things, sinless one, and become free while you are still alive.
śrīrāma uvāca | sarvasaṃśayanīhāraśaraṇmāruta he mune | saṅgaḥ kimucyate brūhi samāsena mama prabho || 83 ||
Sri Rama said: Sage, you are the autumn wind that clears away the fog of every doubt. Tell me briefly, lord, what is called attachment.
But for those who are not liberated while alive, the wretched and the deluded, the impression in the mind stays joined to joy and sorrow, and it becomes a bond.
So, if you give up this kind of attachment, the one that disturbs your own self, and stay undisturbed, then even while acting, you will not be stained.
viharanvyavahāreṣu sukhaduḥkhadaśāsu ca | na vimuñcasi satsāmyaṃ tadasaṅgo'si rāghava || 92 ||
While you go about your daily dealings, and through states of pleasure and pain, if you never let go of true even-mindedness, then, Raghava, you are truly unattached.
And if the self you experience is seen to stay the same in every experience, and you simply accept whatever comes to you, then, Raghava, you are truly unattached.
By staying effortless, resting on this state of being unattached and on the steady state of freedom while alive, stay even-minded and at ease within yourself, and become free of craving, sinless one.
One whose mind rests in freedom while still alive, who stays silent, who has reined in the grip of the senses, and who is free of pride, conceit, and envy, that noble person remains free of all inner turmoil.
Always, even in the midst of the whole web of things, he stays even-minded, and inwardly his being is never crushed. Beyond the plain, natural action that comes in its own order, he does nothing else at all.
Whatever task comes to hand in its own time, he treats that alone as his own to do. He does it only with a mind free of any attachment, without weariness, and stays content within, in his own understanding.
So too, whether he meets misfortune or great prosperity, the wise, great-minded person never gives up his own true nature, just as the ocean of milk, even when churned by Mount Mandara, never gives up its whiteness.
Whether he gains an empire or misfortune, the state of a crawling reptile or the lordship of the gods, he stays free of dejection and free of elation, unchanged, like the moon, which keeps the same form through its waning and its waxing.
Inquire into the self, the self that is free of all agitation, free of every division, in which the many alluring shapes of results have grown quiet. Inquire with a mind that does not give way, so that you become one set upon the highest task.
With the understanding that has become pure through this unfolding, that is kindled, and that has fully grasped the self as the seen, rest firmly on that stainless, untroubled state, and here in this world you will never again be bound by the chains of birth.
