Sri Vasishtha said: having brought yourself, like Vitahavya, to the state of one who has known all there is to know, remain always free from passion, fear and agitation, Raghava.
And other wise sages too, king, of great understanding, who had known all there is to know, went on living in their own kingdoms just as before. You too, wise one, stay just the same way.
The self is never caught by the coming and going of pleasure and pain, even though it is present everywhere. So why, strong-armed one, do you grieve for nothing?
Those who are liberated while living, like you, never come under the power of the changes of joy and anger, just as lions never come under the power of peacocks.
Sri Vasishtha said: Upholder of the Raghu line, these things such as moving through the sky are indeed the natural powers of things, and this is established as true.
This wondrous web of actions that is seen, and then arrived at again, Rama, is simply the nature of things. It is not what the knowers of the self value.
Even someone who does not know the self, and is not liberated, can get things like moving through the sky, Raghava, through the power of substances, past deeds, rites, and time.
This is not the concern of one who knows the self. The knower of the self is himself established in the self. Content with the self in the self, he does not run after ignorance.
All the things that exist in this world are known to be made of ignorance. Then how could a knower of the self, who has given up ignorance, sink into them?
Whether one knows the truth or does not know the truth, whoever strives in the right order by means of time, substances, and deeds, for him things like rising upward are achieved.
na tasyārtho nabhogatyā na siddhyā na ca bhogakaiḥ | na prabhāveṇa no mānairnāśāmarṇajīvitaiḥ || 18 ||
He has no use for moving through the sky, no use for powers, no use for pleasures, no use for glory, no use for honors, no use for hope, for death, or for life.
Like the ocean taking rivers into itself, he too, with whatever comes to him in due course, agreeable or not, stays as he is, honoring only the self.
But if someone, even without having realized the self, wants a whole array of powers, he attains them step by step through the substances that produce such powers.
It succeeds only in this way, by this very method alone — this is the fixed order of destiny. Not even the three-eyed god and the other great gods can make it come to nothing.
This is the very nature of things — each thing is established by itself, not by anything else. A thing never gives up its destiny, just as the moon never gives up its coolness.
Rama, the powers born from substances, from timing, from rituals, and from the use of mantras are exactly these powers — the ones by which things like flying through the sky are achieved.
In the same way, by the force of their own nature, the combinations of substance, timing, and action — when joined with the right method — quickly bring about their fixed result.
For someone who has gone beyond all this, Raghava, who has given up ignorance, for the knowledge of the self there is no such thing here as doing or not doing, O sinless one.
For someone of true understanding, methods involving substance, place, action, and time are of no help at all in reaching the state of the supreme self.
The gaining of the self dawns only when the whole web of desires is stilled. So how, and from what cause, could desire — which is the very opposite of that — ever arise, O sinless one?
Vitahavya made no effort at all out of a desire for knowledge; effort born of a desire for knowledge came only quickly, once he had risen up, there in the forest.
In this way, the powers born from timing, action, deed, substance, method, and one's own nature — one's own powers, gained step by step — come about exactly as one desires.
For the great ones, who are always content, who know the truth, whose minds are purified, and who have gone beyond all wanting, powers are of no help at all.
Sri Vasishtha said: Good man, the awareness that is bound by the impure thread of desire's imprint becomes here a partner in the burning states of pleasure and pain.
Listen, mighty-armed one, to the reasoning by which a yogi is not touched by disturbances such as the destruction of the body, even after hundreds and hundreds of years.
tathā dṛṣṭāri hi mano vikāramupagacchati | dṛṣṭamitram suhṛdyatvam svayamityanubhūyate || 45 ||
In the same way, seeing an enemy, the mind is indeed disturbed; seeing a friend, a feeling of friendliness arises — and this is felt as happening all by itself.
Toward tasty food the mind turns greedy, toward bad food it grows indifferent, and toward something bitter it feels distaste, all this happening on its own.
So too, when a harmful mind suddenly falls on the body of a renunciant full of calm, equal awareness, that harmful mind at once turns calm and even as well.
Because that sameness frees it from attachment, it does not go on to cut or harm, just as a traveler on the road does not needlessly join in the work of a village he passes through.
But once it moves away from the yogi's presence, it turns violent again, and wherever it then goes, it at once takes on the nature of that place, without doubt.
Awareness is present everywhere, in wood, in a clod of earth, in a stone, and the like, but there it exists only as bare existence, like a mute child.
anyacca śrṇu me rāma spando nāśasya kāraṇam | vikāraḥ sa ca cittottho vātajo vā jagatsthitau || 55 ||
Hear one more thing from me, Rama: movement is the cause of decay. As long as this world lasts, that movement comes either from the mind or from the breath.
Movement means the stirring of the life breaths. When that stirring goes still, the body turns as still as stone. Because he stayed fixed in that stillness through concentration, his body was never destroyed.
And this too is seen in the world: when movement stops, the body stays firm and fixed, like steady logs of wood, like the still limbs of a corpse that do not stir.
Then, listen: did that Vitahavya, the knower of truth, the best among those who have known all that is to be known, not become fully at peace once he gave up his body?
ye hi vijñātavijñeyā vītarāgā mahādhiyaḥ | vicchinnagranthayaḥ sarve te svatantrāstanau sthitāḥ || 63 ||
Those who have truly known what is to be known, who are free of craving, who are of great wisdom, whose inner knots are cut, all of them are free and independent even while still remaining in a body.
So, dear one, the mind of those who know the truth works like a crow landing just as the palm fruit falls, whatever it happens to think, it brings about fully, at once.
But when his awareness reached the point of being utterly free of the body, he then became one freed even from the body, fixed forever in that freedom.
vigatavāsanamāśu vipāśatāmupagataṃ mana ātmatayoditam | yadabhivāñchati tadbhavati kṣaṇātsakalaśaktimayo hi maheśvaraḥ || 68 ||
The mind that has dropped its desires, that has quickly become free of every bond, and has risen to the nature of the very self, whatever it wishes for comes true in an instant, for such a mind is the great lord himself, made of every power.
