श्रीवाल्मीकिरुवाच | मेघगम्भीरया वाचा विश्रब्धपदसुन्दरम् | इदं दशरथो वाक्यमुवाच मुनिनायकम् || १ ||

śrīvālmīkiruvāca | meghagambhīrayā vācā viśrabdhopadasundaram | idaṃ daśaratho vākyamuvāca munināyakam || 1 ||

English

Sri Valmiki said: With a voice deep as the rumbling of clouds, confident and melodious, King Dasharatha spoke these words to the leader of the sages.

हिन्दी

श्री वाल्मीकि ने कहा: मेघों की गर्जना के समान गम्भीर वाणी से, विश्वासपूर्वक और मधुर पदों वाली, राजा दशरथ ने मुनियों के नेता से ये वचन कहे।

भगवन्ह्यस्तनेन त्वं वाक्यसंदर्भजन्मना | कच्चिन्मुक्तोऽसि खेदेन तपःकार्श्यातिशायिना || २ ||

bhagavanhyastanena tvaṃ vākyasaṃdarbhajanmanā | kaccinmukto'si khedena tapḥkārśyātiśāyinā || 2 ||

English

O revered one, with your speech that is born of deep contemplation, are you free from the exhaustion that comes from the extreme austerity of your penance?

हिन्दी

हे भगवन्, आपकी गहन चिन्तन से उत्पन्न वाणी से, क्या आप अपनी तपस्या की अत्यन्त कठोरता से उत्पन्न थकान से मुक्त हैं?

ह्यस्तनोक्तो य आनन्दी विविक्तो वचसां गणः | अमृतावर्षणेनेव तेनैवाश्वासिता वयम् || ३ ||

hyastanokto ya ānandī vivikto vacasāṃ gaṇaḥ | amṛtāvarṣaṇeneva tenaivāśvāsitā vayam || 3 ||

English

The joyful and distinct group of words you have spoken, like a shower of nectar, has reassured us.

हिन्दी

जो आनन्दमय और विशिष्ट शब्दों का समूह आपने कहा है, वह अमृत की वर्षा के समान हमें आश्वस्त करता है।

चन्द्रांशव इवोत्सार्य तमांस्यमृतनिर्मलाः | अन्तःशीतलयन्त्येता महताममला गिरः || ४ ||

candrāṃśava ivotsārya tamāṃsyamṛtanirmalāḥ | antaḥśītalyantyetā mahatāmamalā giraḥ || 4 ||

English

Like the rays of the moon dispelling darkness, your pure and nectar-like words bring coolness to the hearts of the great ones.

हिन्दी

चन्द्रमा की किरणों के समान अंधेरा दूर करते हुए, आपकी शुद्ध और अमृतमय वाणी महान लोगों के हृदयों में शीतलता लाती है।

अपूर्वाह्लाददायिन्य उच्चैस्तरपदाश्रयाः | अतिमोहापहारिण्यः सूक्तयो हि महीयसाम् || ५ ||

apūrvāhlādadāyinya uccaiḥstarapadāśrayāḥ | atimohāpahāriṇyaḥ sūktayo hi mahīyasām || 5 ||

English

These verses, which bring unprecedented joy, are supported by lofty and firm words. They dispel great delusions and are indeed the hymns of the exalted ones.

ये श्लोक, जो अपूर्व आनन्द देते हैं, उच्च और दृढ़ शब्दों पर आधारित हैं। वे महान भ्रम को दूर करते हैं और वास्तव में उत्कृष्ट लोगों के स्तुति हैं।

आत्मरत्नावलोकैकदीपिका सरसात्मिकायमाद्युक्तिलतोदेति स वन्द्यः सुजनद्रुमः || ६ ||

ātmaratnāvalokaikadīpikā sarasātmikāyamādyuktilatodeti sa vandyaḥ sujanadrumaḥ || 6 ||

English

The one who shines with the unique light of self-realization and is endowed with the essence of grace, that noble tree is worthy of worship.

हिन्दी

जो आत्म-ज्ञान के अद्वितीय प्रकाश से चमकता है और जिसमें सरसता की आत्मा है, वह उत्तम वृक्ष पूजनीय है।

दुरीहितं दुर्विहितं सर्व सज्जनसूक्तयःप्रमार्जयन्ति शीतांशोस्तमःकाण्डमिवाङ्घ्रयः || ७ ||

durīhitaṃ durvihitaṃ sarva sajjanasūktayaḥpramārjayanti śītāṃśostamaḥkāṇḍamivāṅghrayaḥ || 7 ||

English

The good words of noble people cleanse all that is ill-conceived and ill-executed, like the cool rays of the moon cleanse the darkness.

हिन्दी

सज्जन पुरुषों के शुभ वचन सभी दुर्भावनाओं और गलत कार्यों को साफ करते हैं, जैसे चाँदनी की ठंडी किरणें अंधेरे को दूर करती हैं।

तृष्णालोभादयोऽस्माकं संसारनिगडा मुनेतवोक्त्या तनुतां याताः शरदीवासिताम्बुदाः || ८ ||

tṛṣṇālobhādayo'smākaṃ saṃsāranigaḍā munetavoktyā tanutāṃ yātāḥ śaradīvāsitāmbudāḥ || 8 ||

English

Our desires and greed, which are the shackles of worldly existence, become thin and disappear through the words of the sage, like autumn clouds.

हिन्दी

हमारी इच्छाएँ और लोभ, जो संसार की बेड़ियाँ हैं, ऋषि के वचनों से पतली होकर गायब हो जाती हैं, जैसे शरद ऋतु के बादल।

संप्रवृत्ता वयं द्रष्टुमात्मानमपकल्मषम्रसाञ्जनानीतदृशो जात्यन्धा इव काञ्चनम् || ९ ||

saṃpravṛttā vayaṃ draṣṭumātmānamapakalmaṣamrasāñjanānītadṛśo jātyandhā iva kāñcanam || 9 ||

English

We are engaged in seeing the self, which is pure and free from blemishes, with eyes anointed with the collyrium of emotion, like those blind from birth seeing gold.

हिन्दी

हम अपने आप को देखने में लगे हुए हैं, जो शुद्ध और दोषरहित है, भावना के अंजन से अंजन लगे नेत्रों से, जैसे जन्म से अंधे सोने को देखते हैं।

संसारवासनानाम्नी मिहिका हृदयाम्बरेप्रवृत्ता तनुतां गन्तुं त्वदुक्तिशरदेव नः || १० ||

saṃsāravāsanānāmnī mihikā hṛdayāmbarepravṛttā tanutāṃ gantuṃ tvaduktiśaradeva naḥ || 10 ||

English

The desires of worldly existence, like a cloud in the sky of the heart, become thin and disappear through your words, like autumn.

हिन्दी

संसार की वासनाएँ, हृदय के आकाश में बादल की तरह, आपके वचनों से पतली होकर गायब हो जाती हैं, जैसे शरद ऋतु।

मुने मन्दारमञ्जर्यस्तरङ्गा वामृताम्भसः | न तथा ह्लादयन्त्यन्तर्यथोदारधियां गिरः || ११ ||

mune mandāramañjaryastaraṅgā vāmṛtāmbhasaḥ | na tathā hlādayantyantaryathodāradhiyāṃ giraḥ || 11 ||

English

O sage, the waves of the nectar-like waters of the Mandara blossoms do not delight the noble-minded as much as your words do.

हिन्दी

हे मुनि, मन्दार के फूलों की अमृत जैसी जलराशि की तरंगें उतनी प्रसन्न नहीं करतीं जितनी आपकी बातें उदार बुद्धि वालों को करती हैं।

यद्यद्राघव संयाति महाजनसपर्यया | दिनं तदिह सालोकं शेषास्त्वन्धा दिनालयः || १२ ||

yadyadrāghava saṃyāti mahājanasaparyayā | dinaṃ tadih sālokaṃ śeṣāstvandhā dinālayaḥ || 12 ||

English

O Raghava, whatever day passes in the company of great people, that day is illuminated; the rest are like blind days.

हिन्दी

हे रघुवंशी, जो भी दिन महान लोगों के साथ बीतता है, वह दिन प्रकाशित होता है; बाकी दिन अंधे दिनों के समान हैं।

राम राजीवपत्राक्ष प्रकृतार्थमिहाव्ययम् | मुनिमाबोधय पुनः प्रसादे समवस्थितम् || १३ ||

rāma rājīvapatrākṣa prakṛtārthamihāvyayam | munimābodhaya punaḥ prasāde samavasthitam || 13 ||

English

O Rama, lotus-eyed one, explain the natural meaning here without delay. Awaken the sage again, who is established in grace.

हिन्दी

हे राम, कमल नयन, यहाँ प्राकृतिक अर्थ बिना विलंब के समझाओ। पुनः उस मुनि को जगाओ, जो कृपा में स्थित है।

इत्युक्तो भूभृता तत्र रामाभिमुखमास्थितः | उवाचेदमुदारात्मा वसिष्ठो भगवान्मुनिः || १४ ||

ityukto bhūbhṛtā tatra rāmābhimukhamāsthitaḥ | uvācedamudārātmā vasiṣṭho bhagavānmuniḥ || 14 ||

English

Thus addressed by the king, Rama faced him and the noble-minded sage Vasistha spoke these words.

हिन्दी

राजा द्वारा ऐसा कहे जाने पर, राम उनकी ओर मुँह करके खड़े हुए और उदार मन वाले मुनि वसिष्ठ ने ये बातें कहीं।

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच | राघव स्वकुलैकेन्दो यन्मयोक्तं महामते | कच्चित्स्मरसि वाक्यार्थं पूर्वापरविचारितम् || १५ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | rāghava svakulaikendō yanmayōktaṃ mahāmatē | kaccitsmarasi vākyārthaṃ pūrvāparavicāritam || 15 ||

English

Vasistha said: O Raghava, the sole lord of your clan, O wise one, do you remember the meaning of the words I spoke, which have been considered in sequence?

हिन्दी

वसिष्ठ ने कहा: हे रघुवंशी, अपने कुल के एकमात्र स्वामी, हे बुद्धिमान, क्या तुम उन शब्दों के अर्थ को याद करते हो जो मैंने कहे थे, जिन्हें क्रमबद्ध रूप से विचारा गया है?

उत्पत्तीनां विचित्राणां सत्त्वादिगुणभेदतः | कच्चित्स्मरसि सर्वासां विभागमरिमर्दन || १६ ||

utpattīnāṃ vicitrāṇāṃ sattvādiguṇabhedataḥ | kaccitsmarasi sarvāsāṃ vibhāgamariumardana || 16 ||

English

O destroyer of enemies, do you remember the various distinctions of all the strange creations according to the differences in the qualities beginning with sattva?

हे शत्रुओं के नाशक, क्या आप सत्त्व आदि गुणों के भेद से सभी विचित्र उत्पत्तियों के विभाग को स्मरण करते हैं?

कश्चित्सर्वमसर्वं च सदसच्च सदोदितम् | रूपं स्मरसि वेत्स्येव विविक्तं परमात्मनः || १७ ||

kaścitsarvamasarvaṃ ca sadasaccasadoditam | rūpaṃ smarasi vetsyeva viviktaṃ paramātmanaḥ || 17 ||

English

Do you remember or will you know the distinct form of the Supreme Soul, which is described as everything and not everything, real and unreal, and eternal?

हिन्दी

क्या आप याद करते हैं या जानेंगे परमात्मा के विविक्त रूप को, जो सब कुछ और सब कुछ नहीं, सत् और असत्, और सनातन के रूप में वर्णित है?

यथेदमुदितं विश्वं विश्वेशादेव चेश्वरात् | कच्चित्स्मरसि तत्साधो साधुवादैकभाजन || १८ ||

yathedamuditaṃ viśvaṃ viśveśādeva ceśvarāt | kaccitsmarasi tatsādho sādhuvādaikabhājana || 18 ||

English

O virtuous one, do you remember that this universe, which has been described, originates from the Lord of the universe, the Supreme Lord?

हे साधु, क्या आप याद करते हैं कि यह विश्व, जिसका वर्णन किया गया है, विश्वेश्वर, परमेश्वर से उत्पन्न है?

रूपं कच्चिदविद्याया बलाद्भङ्गुरमाततम् | अनन्तमन्तवच्चैव सम्यक्स्मरसि सन्मते || १९ ||

rūpaṃ kaccidavidyāyā balādbhaṅguramātatam | anantamantavaccaiava samyaksamarasi sanmate || 19 ||

English

O wise one, do you correctly remember the form of ignorance, which is forcefully fragile, both endless and having an end?

हिन्दी

हे बुद्धिमान, क्या आप बलपूर्वक भंगुर, अनंत और अंतवाले अज्ञान के रूप को ठीक से याद करते हैं?

चित्तमेव नरो नान्यदिति यत्प्रतिपादितम् | लक्षणादिविचारेण कच्चित्स्मरसि साधु तत् || २० ||

cittameva naro nānyaditi yatpratipāditam | lakṣaṇādivicāreṇa kaccitsmarasi sādhu tat || 20 ||

English

O virtuous one, do you remember the teaching that a person is indeed the mind and nothing else, as established through the examination of characteristics and other considerations?

हिन्दी

हे साधु, क्या आप याद करते हैं कि मनुष्य वास्तव में मन है और कुछ और नहीं, जैसा कि लक्षणों और अन्य विचारों के परीक्षण द्वारा स्थापित किया गया है?

वाक्यार्थश्चाखिलः कच्चित्त्वया राम विचारितः| ह्यस्तनस्य विचारस्य रात्रौ हृदि निवेशितः || २१ ||

vākyārthaścākhilaḥ kaccittvayā rāma vicāritaḥ| hyastanasya vicārasya rātrau hṛdi niveśitaḥ || 21 ||

English

O Rama, have you considered the meaning of all the statements? The thoughts of the night are placed in the heart.

हिन्दी

हे राम, क्या आपने सभी वाक्यों के अर्थ पर विचार किया है? रात के विचारों को हृदय में रखा गया है।

भूयोभूयः परामृष्टं हृदये सुनियोजितम्| प्रयोजनं फलत्युच्चैर्न हेलाहतसंस्थितेः || २२ ||

bhūyobhūyaḥ parāmṛṣṭaṃ hṛdaye suniyojitam| prayojanaṃ phalatyuccairna helāhatasaṃsthiteḥ || 22 ||

English

Repeatedly examined and well-placed in the heart, the purpose bears fruit abundantly, not for the one who is negligent.

हिन्दी

बार-बार परीक्षा की गई और हृदय में अच्छी तरह से स्थापित, उद्देश्य उत्कृष्ट फल देता है, उदासीन व्यक्ति के लिए नहीं।

भाजनं त्वं विविक्तानां वचसां शुद्धिशालिनाम्| विविक्तहृदयः कण्ठे मुक्तानामिव राघव || २३ ||

bhājanaṃ tvaṃ viviktānāṃ vacasāṃ śuddhiśālinām| viviktahṛdayaḥ kaṇṭhe muktānāmiva rāghava || 23 ||

English

You are the vessel of pure and distinct words, O Raghava, like a string of pearls around the neck of one with a pure heart.

हिन्दी

तुम शुद्ध और अलग शब्दों के पात्र हो, हे रघुवंशी, जैसे एक मोती की माला शुद्ध हृदय वाले के गले में।

श्रीवाल्मीकिरुवाच| कमलासनपुत्रेण मुनिना समहौजसा| एवं वितीर्णावसरो रामो वाक्यमुवाच ह || २४ ||

śrīvālmīkiruvāca| kamalāsana putreṇa muninā samahaujasā| evaṃ vitīrṇāvasaro rāmo vākyamuvāca ha || 24 ||

English

Valmiki said: Thus, when the opportunity arose, Rama spoke these words to the sage, the son of Brahma, who was full of vigor.

हिन्दी

वाल्मीकि ने कहा: इस प्रकार, जब अवसर आया, राम ने ब्रह्मा के पुत्र, ऊर्जा से भरे हुए मुनि से ये शब्द कहे।

श्रीराम उवाच| भगवन्सर्वधर्मज्ञ तवैवैतद्विजृम्भितम्| यदहं परमोदारो बुद्धवान्वचनं तव || २५ ||

śrīrāma uvāca| bhagavansarvadharmajña tavaivaitadvijṛmbhitam| yadahaṃ paramodāro buddhvānvacanaṃ tava || 25 ||

English

Rama said: O Lord, knower of all duties, this is indeed your grace that I, being very noble, have understood your words.

हिन्दी

राम ने कहा: हे भगवान, सभी धर्मों के ज्ञाता, यह आपका ही कृपा है कि मैं, बहुत उदार होकर, आपके शब्दों को समझ गया हूँ।

यदादिशसि तत्सर्वं तथैव न तदन्यथा | अपास्तनिद्रेण मया वाक्यार्थो हृदि चिन्तितः || २६ ||

yadādiśasi tatsarvaṃ tathaiva na tadanyathā | apāstanidreṇa mayā vākyārtho hṛdi cintitaḥ || 26 ||

English

Whatever you command, I will do exactly that and not otherwise. With my sleep gone, I have contemplated the meaning of your words in my heart.

हिन्दी

जो आप आदेश करते हैं, मैं उसे ठीक उसी तरह करूँगा, न कि किसी और तरह से। मेरी नींद उड़ गई है, और मैंने आपके शब्दों के अर्थ को अपने हृदय में सोचा है।

भवान्धकारक्षतये भवतोक्तिविवस्वता | ह्यः प्रसादितमाह्लादि वाग्रश्मिपटलं प्रभो || २७ ||

bhavāndhakārakṣataye bhavatoktivivasvatā | hyaḥ prasāditamāhlādi vāgraśmipataḷaṃ prabho || 27 ||

English

For the destruction of the darkness of existence, by the radiance of your words, O Lord, today your graceful and joyful speech is like the rays of the sun.

हिन्दी

अस्तित्व के अंधकार को नष्ट करने के लिए, आपके शब्दों की चमक से, हे प्रभो, आज आपकी अनुग्रहपूर्ण और आह्लादकारी वाणी सूर्य की किरणों के समान है।

तदतीतमदीनात्मन्सर्वमन्तःकृतं मया | रम्यं पुण्यं पवित्रं च रत्नवृन्दमिवान्वितम् || २८ ||

tadatītamadīnātman sarvamantaḥkṛtaṃ mayā | ramyaṃ puṇyaṃ pavitraṃ ca ratnavṛndamivānvitam || 28 ||

English

That which has passed, O humble self, has all been internalized by me. It is delightful, meritorious, pure, and endowed with a collection of jewels.

हिन्दी

जो बीत गया है, हे विनम्र आत्मा, सब कुछ मेरे द्वारा अंतःकरण में समाहित किया गया है। यह रमणीय, पुण्यमय, पवित्र और रत्नों के समूह से युक्त है।

हितानुबन्धि हृद्यं च पुण्यमानन्दसाधनम् | शिरसा ध्रियते कैर्नो सिद्धैस्त्वदनुशासनम् || २९ ||

hitānubandhi hṛdyaṃ ca puṇyamānandasādhanam | śirasā dhriyate kairno siddhais tvadanuśāsanam || 29 ||

English

It is beneficial, pleasing, meritorious, and a means to attain bliss. Who among the accomplished does not hold your teachings on their head?

हिन्दी

यह हितकारी, हृदयविभोरक, पुण्यमय और आनंद का साधन है। सिद्धों में से कौन आपकी शिक्षाओं को अपने सिर पर नहीं रखता?

प्रतिक्षिपन्तः संसारमिहिकावरणं वयम् | प्रसन्नास्त्वत्प्रसादेन वर्षान्त इव वासराः || ३० ||

pratikṣipantaḥ saṃsāramihikāvaraṇaṃ vayam | prasannāstvatprasādena varṣānta iva vāsarāḥ || 30 ||

English

We who are engaged in worldly affairs, covered by material desires, are joyful by your grace, like days at the end of the rainy season.

हिन्दी

हम जो संसारिक व्यवहारों में लगे हुए हैं, भौतिक इच्छाओं से ढके हुए, आपकी कृपा से प्रसन्न हैं, जैसे वर्षा ऋतु के अंत के दिन।

आपातमधुरारम्भं मध्ये सौभाग्यवर्धनम् । अनुत्तमफलोदर्कं पुण्यं त्वदनुशासनम् || ३१ ||

āpātamadhurārambhaṃ madhye saubhāgyavardhanam | anuttamaphalodarkaṃ puṇyaṃ tvadanuśāsanam || 31 ||

English

Your command, which is sweet at the beginning, increases prosperity in the middle, and yields the best results at the end, is virtuous.

हिन्दी

आपका आदेश, जो शुरुआत में मधुर होता है, मध्य में सौभाग्य बढ़ाता है और अंत में सर्वोत्तम फल देता है, पुण्य है।

विकासिसितमम्लानमाह्लादितशुभाशुभम् । त्वद्वचःकुसुमं नित्यं श्रीमत्फलदमस्तु नः || ३२ ||

vikāsisiitamamlamāhlāditaśubhāśubham | tvadvacaḥkusumaṃ nityaṃ śrīmatphaladamastu naḥ || 32 ||

English

May your words, which are blooming, pure, and joyful, always bear auspicious fruits for us.

हिन्दी

आपके शब्द, जो खिले हुए, पवित्र और आनंदमय हैं, हमें हमेशा शुभ फल दें।

सकलशास्त्रविचारविशारद प्रसृतपुण्यजलैकमहाह्रद । भज भृशं विततव्रत संप्रति प्रसृततां हतकिल्बिष संततिम् || ३३ ||

sakalaśāstravicāravivishārada prasṛtapuṇyajalaikamahāhrada | bhaja bhṛśaṃ vitatavrata saṃprati prasṛtatāṃ hatakilbiṣa saṃtatim || 33 ||

English

O expert in the analysis of all scriptures, O vast ocean of flowing virtues, worship intensely with your vows now, and spread the continuity of virtues, destroying sins.

हिन्दी

हे सभी शास्त्रों के विश्लेषण में विशारद, हे बहते हुए पुण्यों का विशाल सागर, अब अपने व्रतों से तीव्रता से पूजा करो, और पापों को नष्ट करते हुए पुण्यों की संतति फैलाओ।
