Book 5 of the Yoga Vasishtha, chapter 21 — 30 verses in Sanskrit, Devanagari and IAST, with a plain English and Hindi translation of every verse.
The English and Hindi are machine translations, not yet reviewed by a scholar. How they are madeये कैसे बने
Then the two of them, now fully accomplished, masters of both knowledge and its practice, wandered through that forest as they wished, free of any fault.
Then, after some time, the two of them reached the state beyond all becoming. Free of body and free of any bond of affection, they grew still, like two lamps going out.
In this way, the ties of kinship among people who have worn bodies before are endless. So tell me, blameless one, what does anyone really gain by holding on to them, and what does anyone really lose by giving them up?
By dwelling on it, worry grows, just as fire grows with fuel. By not dwelling on it, it dies out, just as fire dies without fuel.
This is the state of Brahman: clear, free of desire, free of any sickness. Once you reach it, mighty-armed one, even a confused person stops being confused.
ekaṃ vivekaṃ suhṛdam ekāṃ prauḍhasakhīṃ dhiyam | ādāya viharann eva saṃkaṭeṣu na muhyati || 9 ||
Take clear judgment as your one friend, and a steady, mature mind as your one companion. Simply by living with these two, you will not lose your way, even in danger.
Through detachment, through the teachings, and through qualities like true greatness, one should, by one's own effort, raise up one's own mind, in order to fend off misfortune.
When the mind is full and content, the whole world turns into streams of nectar for that person, just as for a man wearing sandals, the whole earth feels covered in leather.
Through detachment, the mind, which left to itself only heads toward ruin, becomes full. Through craving, it turns empty, the way a muddy pond dries up in autumn.
For those whose minds are helpless in the grip of craving, the heart turns hollow, its cavity laid bare, like the ocean after the sage Agastya drank it dry.
For minds free of longing, the three worlds fit in a lotus cup, a journey of many miles is no bigger than a cow's hoofprint, and half a blink of an eye lasts as long as a great cosmic age.
śītatā sā na śītāṃśor na himācalakandare | na rambhācandanāvalyāṃ niḥspṛheṣu manaḥsu yā || 19 ||
The coolness found in minds free of craving is not found in the cool-rayed moon, not in a cave in the Himalayas, not in rows of banana trees and sandalwood.
na tathā bhāti pūrṇendur na pūrṇaḥ kṣīrasāgaraḥ | na lakṣmīvadanaṃ kāntaṃ spṛhāhīnaṃ yathā manaḥ || 20 ||
The full moon does not shine like this, the brimming ocean of milk is not this bright, and even the lovely face of the goddess Lakshmi does not shine like this. Only a mind free of craving shines this way.
Just as a streak of cloud dims the moon, and just as a smear of soot dims something coated with nectar, in the same way, the demoness called craving corrupts a man from within.
Craving forms the branches of the mind's tree, and they block out the horizon in every direction. When those branches are cut away, the great tree of the mind itself dissolves into formlessness.
When the stump of the mind, with its great branch of craving cut away, comes to rest, then steadiness, though it is one single thing, grows a hundred new branches.
Dwelling on something is what we call a movement of the mind, and the mind runs on hope and craving. Since the mind's movements come from this craving, give up craving and go to the state beyond mind.
yo yayā vartate vṛttyā sa tayaiva vinā kṣayīataścittopaśāntyarthaṃ tadvṛttiṃ prakṣayaṃ naya || 29 ||
Whatever runs on some particular activity dies out the moment that activity stops. So, to bring the mind to rest, put an end to its activity completely.
Great soul, still every last craving in yourself. Cast off the bondage of worldly existence and set your mind free. The ropes and shackles in the mind are these bad desires. Once they have fallen away completely, who is not free?
