Sri Vasishtha said: on this very point, people tell an old story, a conversation between two brothers, sons of a sage, on the bank of the river that flows by three paths.
Its peaks and caves reach up into Brahma's world, and there the deep, humming echo of Sama-Veda chanting sounds, as if the mountain itself were singing.
When the sharabhas, eager to leap into the sky, stretch and roar, the sound rolls through the mountain's winding caves, as if it were laughing at the clouds of the end of the age.
āsīdabhyuditajñānastaporāśirudāradhīḥ | munirdīrghatapā nāma tapo mūrtamivāparam || 11 ||
There lived a sage named Dirghatapa. His wisdom had fully awakened. He was a great mass of austerity, noble minded, as if penance itself had taken on a body once again.
Pavana was only half awake to it, like a lotus half open at dawn twilight. Out of foolishness he had not fully reached that knowledge, and he remained standing in his place, wavering.
tato vahatyakalite kāle kalitakāraṇe | saṃvatsarśate jīrṇadīrghadehalatāyuṣi || 16 ||
Then, as time flowed on, unnoticed yet the known cause of everything, a hundred years passed, and the long vine of his body's life grew old and withered.
He gave up delight in this world, this world so rich in things that break and pass away, so frightening with its hundreds of happenings, and his life was worn thin and shattered by old age.
In his home in the mountain cave, the sage Dirghatapa gave up his body, the nest of the bird called awareness, the way a porter sets down a heavy load.
He passed into the state where all mental activity had fallen silent, the dwelling place of pure, undiminished consciousness, free of all passion, like the scent of a flower fading into the open sky.
With the yoga method she had practiced for a long time, the one her husband had given her, she gave up her body while it was still fresh, the way a bee leaves a lotus plant.
Punya said: Why, my child, are you making your grief so heavy, the one thing that blinds a person? It is terrible, streaming with tears, like a lotus covered in rain in the monsoon season.
That is the place of all beings, the true form of those who have mastered themselves. Why do you grieve for a father who has reached his own true nature?
This is the kind of thinking that has taken hold of you here, born out of confusion, that in this world you grieve for our father, even though he is not someone to be grieved for.
My child, thousands of mothers and fathers have already passed away for you, many of them, like the many channels a flowing stream cuts, forest after forest.
My child, if mothers, fathers, and sons are to be grieved for out of love, then why are those thousands who have passed away, one after another, not grieved for?
This whole world you see, fortunate one, is seen only within the error of the waking state. In the highest truth, wise one, you have no friend and no relative.
na nāśa iva hi bhrātaḥ paramārthena vidyate | mahatyapi cirātapte marāviva payolavāḥ || 37 ||
Brother, in truth there is no such thing as destruction at all, no more than there is water, even a few drops, in a vast desert scorched by the sun for a long time.
This endless world flickers like a mirage in the desert made wide by ignorance. It trembles with waves made of the flow of good and bad. To those who still carry their old habits of mind, this water does not look like a mirage at all.
