15.11.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | iti saṃcintya janako yathāprāptāṃ kriyāmasau | asaktaḥ kartumuttasthau dinaṃ dinapatiryathā || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: thinking this, Janaka got up to carry out the task before him, free of attachment, just as the sun rises to bring on the day.

iṣṭāniṣṭāḥ parityajya cetasā vāsanāḥ svayam | yathāprāptaṃ cakārāsau jāgratyeva suṣuptavat || 2 ||

Giving up, in his own mind, both liked and disliked desires, he did whatever task came to him, awake yet as if in deep sleep.

35.11.3

saṃpādya tadahaḥkāryamāryāvarjanapūrvakam | anayaccharvarīmekastayaiva dhyānalīlayā || 3 ||

Having finished that day's work, after first honoring the venerable ones, he alone spent the night in that same play of meditation.

manaḥ samarasaṃ kṛtvā saṃśāntaviṣayabhramam | śarvaryāṃ kṣīyamāṇāyāmitthaṃ cittamabodhayat || 4 ||

Making his mind calm and even, its confusion about the objects of the senses fully stilled, as the night was ending he spoke thus to teach his own mind.

O restless mind, this world is not for your own happiness. Come to peace. From peace comes calm happiness, the true essence one gains.

yathā yathā vikalpaughānsaṅkalpayasi helayā | tathā tathaiti sphāratvaṃ saṃsārastava cintayā || 6 ||

The more you carelessly build up floods of thoughts and imaginings, the more this world of yours keeps growing and spreading through your own worrying.

śataśākhatvamāyāti sekena viṭapī yathā | anantādhitvamāyāsi śaṭhabhogecchayā tathā || 7 ||

Just as a tree grows a hundred branches when it is watered, so you fall into endless torment through your craving for deceitful pleasures.

cintājālavilāsotthā janmasaṃsārasṛṣṭayaḥ | tasmāttyaktvā vicitrāṃ tvaṃ cintāmupaśamaṃ vraja || 8 ||

Births and worlds are creations that arise from the play of this web of thoughts. So give up your restless, many-colored thinking, and go to peace.

saṃsārasṛṣṭitaralāmimāṃ tulaya sundara | asyāṃ cetsāramāpnoṣi tadetāmeva saṃśraya || 9 ||

Weigh this unsteady creation of the world, O good mind. If you find any real substance in it, then hold on to that very thing.

āsthāṃ yasmātparityajya dṛśyadarśanalālasāt | maitadgṛhāṇa mā muñca svecchayā viharecchayā || 10 ||

Since your attachment comes from the eagerness to see the visible world, give up that attachment. Yet do not grasp this world, and do not let it go either. Move through it exactly as you wish, at your own will.

idaṃ dṛśyamasatsadvāpyudetvastamupaitu vā | sādho viṣamatāṃ gaccha maitadīyaiguṇāguṇaiḥ || 11 ||

Whether this visible world is real or unreal, whether it appears or disappears, O good one, do not let its good and bad qualities throw you off balance.

manāgapi na saṃbandhastava dṛśyena vastunā | avidyamānarūpeṇa saṃbandhaḥ ko'yamīdṛśaḥ || 12 ||

You do not have even the slightest connection with any visible thing. What kind of connection could there even be with something whose very form does not exist?

asadetattu saccettvaṃ tathāpi kila sundara | saṅgaḥ sadasatoḥ kīdṛgvad tvaṃ martyajīvayoḥ || 14 ||

But even if this world is unreal and you, O good mind, are real, tell me, what kind of tie could there be between the real and the unreal, between the mortal and the living self?

asattvametacca na sadvyorevāsatoḥ satoḥ | saṃbandha iti citreyamapūrvaivākṣarāvalī || 15 ||

Non-existence itself is not something that exists. So to speak of a connection between these two, the unreal and the real, is a strange, truly unheard-of string of words.

tasmānmahādhiṃ muñca tvaṃ mūkamullāsamāhara | saṃkṣubdhāmbudhimāviṣṭāṃ tyajābhavyāmimāṃ sthitim || 16 ||

So let go, O mind, of your great anguish, and take up a quiet joy instead. Give up this wretched state, caught as it is in a churning sea.

kandukālātavadvyarthamātma naiva parijvalan | mā mohamalamāsādya mandatāṃ gaccha sanmate || 17 ||

Blazing pointlessly all on your own, like a tossed ball, like a whirled firebrand, do not fall into the stain of delusion and sink into dullness, O right-minded one.

na tadihāsti samunnatamuttamaṃ vrajasi yena parāṃ paripūrṇatām | tadavalambya balādatidhīratāṃ jahihi cañcalatāṃ śaṭha re manaḥ || 18 ||

There is nothing here so great that through it you could reach complete and highest fullness. Relying on just this, hold firm with all your strength, and give up your restlessness, O deceitful mind.
