14.55.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | ityākarṇya tadā tatra rātrāvālapanam dvayoḥ | aham raghukulākāśaśaśāṅka raghunandana || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: O Rama, joy of Raghu's line, moon in the sky of the Raghu clan, I had heard, there, that night, the conversation between the two of them.

patitaḥ khātkadambāgre patrapuṣpaphalākule | tūṣṇīṃ nirvṛṣṭamuktātmā śṛṅgāgra iva toya daḥ || 2 ||

I fell from the sky onto the top of a kadamba tree thick with leaves, flowers and fruit. I was silent, my feelings spent, like a cloud resting on a mountain peak after it has poured out all its rain.

apaśyaṃ tatra dāśūraṃ śūramindriyanigrahe | pareṇa tapasā yuktaṃ tejaseva hutāśanam || 3 ||

There I saw Dashura, brave in mastering his senses, filled with the highest austerity, blazing like fire with his own brightness.

tejobhirdehaniṣkrāntaiḥ kāñcanīkr̥tabhūtalam | tāpayantaṃ pradeśaṃ taṃ bhuvanaṃ bhāskaro yathā || 4 ||

The light streaming from his body had turned the ground to gold, and he warmed that whole place the way the sun warms the world.

māmathālokya saṃprāptaṃ dāśūro'rghasaparyayā | vitīrṇaviṣṭaraṃ patrapūjayā paryapūjayat || 5 ||

Then, seeing that I had arrived, Dashura welcomed me with the offering of arghya. He gave me a seat and honored me fully with an offering of leaves.

dṛṣṭavāṃstamahaṃ vṛkṣaṃ korakottarakoṭaramdāśūrasyecchayā sarvairayatadbhirmṛgavrajaiḥ || 7 ||

I saw that tree, its hollow higher up filled with buds, and all around it, because Dashura wished it so, herds of deer that felt no fear at all.

sevyamānaṃ vanamiva latāmaṇḍalamaṇḍitam | smitena visphuṭamiva śvasanasphuritacchadam || 8 ||

It was frequented so much that it seemed like a whole forest. It was decked with a mass of creepers, seeming to break into a smile, its leaves trembling in the breeze.

latākoṭigatairbhrāntaiścāmarairindusundaraiḥ | śubhrābhraakhṇḍanikaraiḥ śarannabha ivāvṛtam || 9 ||

It was covered, like the autumn sky, with white tufts swaying at the tips of its creepers, beautiful as the moon, like clusters of bright, broken clouds.

104.55.10

prāleyakaṇapaddhatyā muktāvalyābhyalaṅkṛtam | sarvāvayavamevācchapuṣpapūraiḥ prapūritam || 10 ||

A line of dewdrops decked it like a string of pearls, and every part of it was filled to the brim with clear, white flowers.

vivāhāyeva veṣeṇa puṣpabhārātibhāriṇā | latāṅganānuṣaktena nāgareṇa kṛtopamam || 12 ||

It was like a young bridegroom dressed for his wedding, his clothes heavy with the weight of flowers, held close by the creepers clinging to him like women in love.

munibaddhoṭajākāralatāmaṇḍapamaṇḍitam | mañjarībhiḥ patākābhiryuktaṃ puramahotsave || 13 ||

It was decked with a bower of vines shaped like a hut, as if built by sages, hung with sprays of flowers like the banners of a great city festival.

144.55.14

mṛgakaṇḍūyanadhvastapuṣpadhūlividhūsaram | protsāritopāntavanaṃ vṛṣamallamivottitam || 14 ||

It was grey with flower-dust shaken loose where deer had rubbed themselves against it. It stood clear of the forest around its edges, as if it had pushed the woods back, and it rose up like a champion bull in a wrestling match.

pravālāruṇahastena kusumasmitaśobhinā | madhunā ghūrṇamānena prāntena pulakatviṣā || 16 ||

It had a hand red as young coral, shining with the smile of its flowers, swaying with its nectar as if drunk, the sheen of a thrill of joy along its edges,

nīrandhrpuṣpapūrṇena ghūrṇitena vanānilaiḥ | nidrālukuḍmaladṛśā stabakastanadhāriṇā || 17 ||

dense with flowers, leaving no gap, swaying in the forest breeze, its buds like drowsy, half-closed eyes, its clusters of flowers like breasts.

184.55.18

puṣpajālarajaḥpuñjakukumāruṇavāsasā | latāvitānanilayavātāyananiṣaṅgiṇā || 18 ||

It wore a robe reddened like saffron by clouds of pollen-dust from its web of flowers, and its canopy of vines formed the windows of its home.

nīlapuṣpalatādolālīlālāsyavilāsinā | āpādamastakaprāntaṃ sarvato nirmitālayam || 19 ||

It took delight, like a graceful dancer, in the swinging play of its blue-flowered vines, and its bower was built all around it, covering it from top to bottom.

vṛndena vanadevīnāṃ kokilālāpaśālinā | saṃdigdhamañjarījālamalinetreṇa bhāsinā || 20 ||

Forest-goddesses came to it in crowds. It was rich with the calls of cuckoos and full of light, and its bees were so lost among the mass of flower-clusters that even their eyes seemed confused.

214.55.21

avaśyāyopaśamitaratikhedairmadālasaiḥ | puṣpadhūlisamālabdhairāśliṣṭairnibiḍaṃ mithaḥ || 21 ||

Their weariness from passion soothed by the morning dew, languid with intoxication, smeared all over with flower-pollen, they clung to each other tightly.

puṣpāntarāntaḥpuragaiḥ kimapi praṇayocitam | dhvanadbhirabhitaḥ svacchamattāliyugalairvṛtam || 22 ||

It was surrounded on every side by pairs of bright, drunk bees, buzzing as they nested among the flowers, filling the air with something that felt strangely like love.

234.55.23

kānanopāntanagarīghuṃghumākarṇanechchayā | kṣaṇamutkarṇamāśāntacāruvarvaṇaṭāṃkṛtaiḥ || 23 ||

For a moment, ears pricked up there, wanting to catch the far off hum of a town at the edge of the forest, amid the sweet cries sounding all around.

244.55.24

kṣaṇaṃ dalāgraviśrāntamugdhmugdhśirastayā | paśyadbhirindvaṃśukavajjālāmarṇavamekhalām || 24 ||

For a moment they rested their gentle, innocent heads on the tip of a leaf, watching the belt of the sea that looked wrapped in moonlight.

vanasthalīnāṃ tanayairnayaimūrtimivāsthitaiḥ | śubhaiḥ patrapuṭeṣvantarmṛgaiḥ sāratālāntaram || 25 ||

The young fawns of the forest glades, whose gentle ways made them look like living images, lay in lovely leaf cups deep inside the trunk.

264.55.26

nīḍaśvasatsuviśvastasuptamātrakapakṣiṇam | pākacyutaphalopāntabhūtakañcukamaṇḍalī || 26 ||

Birds slept there in their nests, utterly at ease, breathing softly, and a ring of skins lay scattered near the ripe fruit that had fallen.

saṃdigdhamūkabhramaraṃ gucchaiḥ pūjākṣasūtrakaiḥ | śyāmalīkṛtaparyantaṃ nīḍaiḥ pallavamaṇḍitaiḥ || 27 ||

The bees there were hushed, as if unsure whether to hum. Its clusters of flowers looked like strings of prayer beads, its edges had turned deep green, and it was decked with nests covered in fresh shoots.

284.55.28

sugandhitāśeṣavanaṃ puṣpameghīkṛtāmbaram | dhūlīkadambśabalaphalaughavalitaṃ tale || 28 ||

It filled the whole forest with fragrance and turned the sky into a cloud of flowers, and at its foot lay a mottled heap of dust and fallen fruit.

bahunātra kimuktena na kiṃcidapi vidyate| patraṃ yatra tarau yatra noṣyate vā na yujyate || 29 ||

Why say more? There was not one leaf on that tree left empty or unused.

patre patre mṛgāḥ suptā viśrāntāśca pade pade| kacche kacche khagā līnāstasya bhūruhabhūpateḥ || 30 ||

On every leaf of that king of trees, deer lay sleeping and resting at every spot, and in every hollow, birds nestled.

evaṃguṇaviśiṣṭaṃ taṃ samālokayato mama| mahotsavena sadṛśī sā babhūva tamasyinī || 31 ||

As I gazed at that tree, so full of such fine qualities, the night became like a great festival.

tataḥ kathābhī ramyābhiḥ sa tasya tanayo mayā| vijñānālokaramyābhirnīto bodhaṃ paraṃ punaḥ || 32 ||

Then, with delightful stories bright with the light of wisdom, I brought him, the son of Dashura, once again to the highest understanding.

āvayostatra citrābhiḥ kathābhiritaretaram| śarvarī sā vyatīyāya muhūrta iva kāntayoḥ || 33 ||

There, as we traded wondrous tales back and forth, that night passed for the two of us in a single moment, the way it does for two people in love.

prātaḥ pratanutāṃ yāte puṣparddhighanajālake | svargāṅganāṅgabhogābhe tārakānikare śanaiḥ || 34 ||

At dawn, the thick mass of stars, dense as a cluster of blossoms and looking like the lovely limbs of heavenly women, slowly began to fade.

ākadambanabhobhāgamupayātaṃ sutānvitam | ahaṃ visṛjya dāśūraṃ tato'maranadīṃ gataḥ || 35 ||

I left Dashura, who together with his son had risen into the region of the sky scattered with kadamba blossoms, and then I went on to the river of the gods.

tatrābhimatamāsādya sthānametya nabhastalam | praviśya khaṃ munīnāṃ ca madhyaṃ svastha iva sthitaḥ || 36 ||

There, having reached the place I wanted, arriving at the floor of the sky, I entered that space and stood, as if perfectly at ease, in the middle of the sages.

dāśūrākhyāyikaiṣā te kathitā raghunandana | jagataḥ pratibimbābhā satyākārāpyasanmayī || 37 ||

This, Raghunandana, is the story of Dashura that I have told you. It is like a reflection of the world, real in shape but made of what is not real.

384.55.38

svareṇucandanālepaiḥ samālabdhamakhaṇḍitamsvacchadābhogavipularaktāmbaraparicchadam || 38 ||

It was anointed all over with its own pollen and sandal paste, whole and unbroken, wrapped in a broad, bright red garment.

tasmādavāstavīṃ tyaktvā vāstavīmapi rañjanām | dāśūrasiddhāntadṛśā sadodāro bhavātmavān || 39 ||

So let go of both the false attachment and even the true attachment, through the understanding taught by Dashura, and always stay noble and in control of yourself.

tasmādvikalpaṃ malamātmanastvaṃ nirdhūya paśyāmalamātmatattvam | āsādayiṣyasyacirātpadaṃ tadbhaviṣyasījyo bhuvaneṣu yena || 40 ||

So shake off the impurity that is confusion in your own mind, and see the pure truth of yourself. You will soon reach that state, and because of it you will be worshipped in every world.
