śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | jagatsaṃpannamevedaṃ saṃpannaṃ kiṃcideva na | śūnyameva ca bhāmātraṃ manovilasitaṃ sthitam || 1 ||
Vasishtha said: this world seems to have come into being, but really nothing has come into being at all. It is empty, just a flicker of light, nothing but a play of the mind.
It is like a painting without a wall to hold it, seen, yet made of nothing real. Though never made, this world appears as if made, a strange picture painted on empty space.
ābhāsamātraṃ hi jagaddhaṭāvaṭapaṭabhramaiḥ | āvartate na sadrūpātpṛthakkuḍyādayaḥ sthitāḥ || 6 ||
The world is merely an appearance, like the illusion of a pot, a pit, or a cloth. It does not exist apart from the one true reality, just as a wall and other things like it do not exist apart from clay.
sarvaśaktidhare deve kā nāma nanu śaktayaḥ | na saṃbhavantyāśriyante yābhirantarmanoguhāḥ || 9 ||
God holds every power there is, so what power could possibly be missing in him? These are the very powers that dwell even in the hidden depths inside the mind.
Look, Rama, the body is a child born of the mind alone, produced through imagination. That is why the wise call the mind's power one that holds every power there is.
Gods, demons, humans, and all the rest are made only by their own minds' imagining. When that imagining dies down, they too die out, like a lamp going out for lack of oil.
Raghava, you fail to see clearly, with a sharp eye, that this vast world has risen out of your own body. Why does your small mind get so confused, like someone who knows nothing?
Just as heat produces the illusion of a mirage, so the mind's own conviction produces all this. All of these, even Brahma and the other gods, appear, in truth, not to exist at all.
All the countless forms in this world are like seeing two moons where there is only one, they rise up like idle daydreams, made solid only by false knowledge.
Just as someone riding in a boat wrongly feels that the fixed posts on the shore are moving, in the same way, this endless chain of forms has always risen up as something unreal.
This whole world is nothing but Brahman itself. Then where could any otherness come from? What kind of thing would that even be? What would it be, and where would it even exist?
This is a mountain, this is a post, such grand illusions appear only because the mind's imagining is so firm. What is unreal is seen as if it were real.
For a careless person, this world is just the start of a fall into endless multiplicity. Give up thinking driven by desire and craving, Rama, and turn your attention to something else.
Just as a dream, however grand its events, is only an illusion and nothing real, know that this world too is just like that, one long dream, produced by the mind.
It looks like it offers great enjoyment, but when you grasp it, there is no real substance there, it is only a basket holding snakes of desire and hope. Give up this whole showy pretense of worldly life.
Knowing that all this is unreal, do not put your heart into it. A wise person, once he recognizes a mirage for what it is, does not go chasing after it.
That wealth is only a wish, shaped by a person's own imagination and rich only in appearance. The fool who runs after it becomes nothing but a vessel of sorrow.
vastunyasati loko'yaṃ yātu kāmamavastuni | yastu vastu parityajya yātyavastu sa naśyati || 28 ||
Let this world wander as it pleases among things that do not really exist, even while the real remains unseen. But the man who turns away from the real and goes after the unreal is ruined.
This is nothing but a confusion of the mind, like mistaking a rope for a snake and being afraid. Only because imagination takes so many different forms, the world keeps turning around, again and again, for a long time.
asadabhyuditairbhāvairjalāntaścandravaccalaiḥ | vañcyate bāla eva eha na tattvajño bhavādṛśaḥ || 30 ||
Only a child, only a fool, is fooled by things that never really arose, things that flicker like the moon's reflection in water. Someone who knows the truth, a person like you, is not fooled by them.
ya imaṃ guṇasaṃghātaṃ bhāvayansukhamīhate | pramārṣṭi sa jaḍo jāḍyaṃ vahnibhāvanayā svayā || 31 ||
The dull man who broods over this bundle of qualities and looks for happiness in it is trying to burn away his own dullness merely by picturing a fire in his mind, not by lighting a real one.
Though this world does not truly exist, it looks vast and full, the way water can form shapes that look like a woven cage, and the way a city seems to stand inside the heart simply because the mind pictures it there.
This world rises when the mind wants it to, and it dissolves when the mind stops wanting it. So it appears grand and full, though falsely, just like a city of the Gandharvas seen in the sky.
When a vast city, imagined by the mind in the heart, is destroyed, or when it grows bigger, tell me, what has really grown, whose is it, and what has really been damaged?
Just as children, for the sake of play, dream up a whole make-believe scene in their hearts, in the very same way this world keeps arising, endlessly, out of the mind.
Just as, when a magician's water-illusion collapses and vanishes, nothing of anyone's is truly lost, in the very same way, when this world, which arose falsely, is destroyed, nothing of anyone's is truly lost.
If what is unreal simply turns out to be unreal, then what, indeed, is lost, and to whom? So in this world there is truly no ground at all for joy or for sorrow.
What is completely unreal to begin with, what, indeed, is destroyed of it? And when there is no real destruction, wise one, what room is there for any sorrow?
Or take what is completely real, what, indeed, of it is ever destroyed? This entire world is nothing but Brahman itself, so how could pleasure or pain even arise?
Or again, take what is completely unreal, what kind of growth could it ever have? And when there is no real growth, wise one, what room is there for joy?
In this world, which is false everywhere, which is made entirely of this false multiplicity, what is there worth wanting, that a wise person should desire it?
And in this world, which is everywhere real, being made entirely of the true nature of Brahman, what is there in the three worlds worth rejecting, that the wise should avoid?
asatsadvā jagadyasya tenāsau sukhaduḥkhayoḥ | agamya eva mūrkhas tu tadvināśena duḥkhitaḥ || 44 ||
Whoever truly grasps the world as unreal, or as real, is, because of that understanding, beyond the reach of both pleasure and pain. But the fool is pained by the world's destruction.
Rama, whatever does not exist at the start and does not exist at the end does not really exist now, in the present, either. The person who longs for that unreal thing shows nothing but his own unreality.
ādāvante ca yatsatyaṃ vartamāne sadeva tat | yasya sarvaṃ sadeva syāttasya sattaiva dṛśyate || 46 ||
What is true at the beginning and at the end is indeed true now, in the present, as well. For the person for whom everything is real, only his own reality is seen.
Things that are not real, like the moon reflected in water, or the surface of the sky, only children long for these, and it only confuses the mind. Wise, excellent people do not long for them.
bālo hi vitatākārairvasturiktaiḥ prayojanaiḥ | saṃtoṣametyanantāya duḥkhāya na sukhāya tu || 48 ||
The fool indeed finds satisfaction in pursuits that look big and spread out but are empty of any real substance, and this satisfaction leads only to endless sorrow, never to happiness.
asadidamakhilaṃ mayā sametaṃ tviti vigṇayya viṣāditāstu mā te | sadiha hi sakalaṃ mayā sametaṃ tviti ca vilokya viṣāditāstu mā te || 50 ||
Think it over. All this is unreal, though it exists joined with me, and do not let that make you sorrowful. Or look at it this way. All this is indeed real, joined with me, and do not let that make you sorrowful either.
Sri Valmiki said, when the sage had finished speaking, the day came to an end and gave way to the evening rites, and the sun went down. The assembly bowed to him and went off to bathe. And along with the fading rays of the sun, the darkness of dusk came on.
