14.38.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | evaṃ sthite tu tajjñānāṃ yadetatkartṛtvaṃ dṛśyate sukhaduḥkhādiṣu yogādiṣu vā tadasannatu mūrkhāṇām || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: this being so, whatever doership appears in pleasure, pain, and the like, or in practices such as yoga, is unreal for those who know the truth, but not for fools.

yataḥ kartṛtvaṃ nāma kimucyate | yo hyantasthāyā manovṛtterniścaya upādeyatāpratyayo vāsanābhidhānastatkartṛtvaśabdenocyate || 2 ||

Now, what exactly is this thing called doership? Inside the mind there is a firm feeling, a sense that says, this is worth having, this should be taken. That fixed habit of mind, called vasana, is what the word doership really means.

ceṣṭāvaśāttādṛkphalabhoktṛtvaṃ vāsanānurūpaṃ spandate puruṣaḥ spandānurūpaṃ phalamanubhavati | phalabhoktṛtvaṃ nāma kartṛtvāditi siddhāntaḥ || 3 ||

Driven by his own effort, a person moves according to the desire fixed in his mind, and he experiences a result that matches that movement. This experiencing of the result happens because of that doership. This is the settled teaching.

tathāca kurvato'kurvato vāpi svarge'pi narake'pi vā | yādṛgvāsanametatsyānmanastadanubhūyate || 4 ||

So whether a person acts or does not act, whether he is in heaven or in hell, whatever desire is fixed in his mind, that alone is what he experiences.

tasmādajñātatattvānāṃ puṃsāṃ kurvatāmakurvatāṃ ca kartṛtā natu jñātatattvānāmavāsanatvāt || 5 ||

So for people who have not known the truth, there is doership whether they act or do not act. But this is not so for those who have known the truth, because they are free of desire.

jñātātattvo hi śithilībhūtavāsanaḥ kurvannapi phalaṃ nānusaṃdadhāti athaca spandanamātraṃ kevalaṃ karotyasaktabuddhiḥ saṃprāptamapi phalamātmaivedaṃ sarvameva karmaphalamanubhavatyakurvannapi karoti magnamanāḥ || 6 ||

One who knows the truth has loosened his desires. Even while acting, he does not run after the fruit of the action. He does only the bare movement needed, his mind unattached. Even when a result comes to him, he takes it all simply as the self, as nothing but the fruit of past action. Even when he does nothing, he is acting, because his mind stays absorbed.

mano yatkaroti tatkṛtaṃ bhavati yanna karoti tanna kṛtaṃ bhavati ato mana eva kartṛ na dehaḥ || 7 ||

What the mind does, that becomes done. What the mind does not do, that does not become done. So the mind alone is the doer, not the body.

cittādevāyaṃ saṃsāra āgataścittamaya eva cittamātraṃ citta eva sthita iti vijñātam viṣayaścamṛgatṛsarvamupaśāntamabhūdvāsanāiveti jña evāstīti || 8 ||

This world has come from the mind alone. It is made only of mind. It is mind, and it rests in mind alone. This much is understood. The objects of the senses, like a mirage, have all quieted down. Once one sees, this is only a mental impression, only the knower is left.

ātmavidāṃ hi tanmanaḥ paramupaśamamāgataṃ mṛgatṛṣṇājalamiva varṣati jalade himakaṇa iva caṇḍātape vilīnaṃ turyadaśāmupāgataṃ sthitam || 9 ||

For those who know the self, the mind has come to complete peace. It is like the water of a mirage when a real cloud pours down rain, or a drop of ice melting in fierce sunlight, it has dissolved, and it rests, having reached the fourth state.

nānandaṃ na nirānandaṃ na calaṃ nācalaṃ sthiram | na sannāsanna caitēṣāṃ madhyaṃ jñānimano viduḥ || 10 ||

It is not joy, and it is not without joy. It is not moving, and it is not still, yet it stays steady. It is not existing, and it is not non-existing, and it is not something between the two. This is how the wise describe the mind of one who has known the truth.

na vāsanāmaye spandarase gaja iva palvale majjati tajjño mūrkhamanobhogabhūmimeva paśyati na sattattvaṃ || 11 ||

One who knows this does not sink, like an elephant in a swamp, into the current of movement made of desire. He only sees it as the fool's field of mental pleasure, he does not see it as the real truth.

And here is another example on this point. One person, even without falling into a pit, even while lying on a couch, because his mind is soaked in the impression of falling into a pit, feels the pain of falling into a pit. Another person, even while actually falling into a pit, because his mind has reached deep peace, feels the comfort of lying on a couch. So between these two, lying on a couch and falling into a pit, one has become, as it were, the doer of the fall into the pit, though he did not do it, and the second has become a non-doer of the fall into the pit, though he did it. Both happen because of the mind. So whatever the mind is, that is what a person becomes. This is the settled teaching.

tena tatra karturakarturvā nityamasansaktaṃ bhavatu ceto nahi kiṃcidasti ātmatattvavyatiriktaṃ yatra saṃsaktirbhāvyate | yatkiṃcididaṃ jagadgataṃ tatsarvaṃ śuddhacittatvādābhāsamavehi || 13 ||

So whether one is a doer or not a doer in this, let the mind always stay unattached. There is nothing at all apart from the true self in which attachment could ever form. Know that whatever exists in this world is nothing but appearance, because it is made only of pure mind.

144.38.14

So for this person who has understood what is to be understood, when it becomes settled certainty that the self is never touched by pleasure or pain, when it becomes settled certainty that no idea of a holder and a thing held stands apart from the self, when it becomes settled certainty, I, the doer and the enjoyer, am different from every single thing, and am as small as a thousandth part of the tip of a hair, or when it becomes settled certainty, whatever this is, all of it is only me, when it becomes settled certainty, I alone remain, present everywhere, lighting up every being, and I am never touched by pleasure or pain, then, his fever gone, the movements of his mind stay in the business of daily life only as play.

154.38.15

Even in danger, only joy remains for the one who knows this, like moonlight, it lights up his whole way of being in the world. Apart from the mind there is nothing else, and so this knower, even while acting, has become a non-doer, because the mind does not stain him. He does not feel the result of action, not even of the deliberate movement of his hands and feet.

evaṃ manaḥ sarvakarmaṇāṃ sarvehitānāṃ sarvabhāvānāṃ sarvalokānāṃ sarvagatīnāṃ bījaṃ tasminparihṛte sarvakarmāṇi parihṛtāni bhavanti sarvaduḥkhāni kṣīyante sarvakarmāṇi layamupayānti | mānasenāpi karmaṇāyatkṛtenāpi jño nākramyate na vivaśīkriyate na rañjanāmupaityavyatiriktāt || 16 ||

So the mind is the seed of all actions, all wishes, all states of being, all worlds, and all paths of life. When the mind is given up, all actions are given up with it. All suffering is destroyed. All actions dissolve away. Even by an action done with the mind, the one who knows the truth is never overpowered, never made helpless, and never stained, because he is never separate from his true self.

Take a child who builds a city with his mind and then wipes it out again. He experiences the building of that city, though his own mind made it, as if it had never been made, only as play. He does not see its pleasure or pain as something worth holding on to, or as real. He also sees the destroying of the city, though his mind made it, as merely done, nothing more. So even while feeling something like suffering in the game, he sees that it is not really suffering. In the same way, this person, even while truly acting, is never stained by it.

In this world, the very cause of suffering is this, dividing all things into what is to be rejected and what is to be accepted. And among the things called acceptable, nothing at all can be found that is imperishable and separate from the self. So this self does not act and does not enjoy. This thing called doership is only something wrongly placed on oneself, it has no reality.

āvaśyakaṃ tatsamyagdarśanamohānna vastuta iti yathābhūtavastuvicāraṇātkartṛtvabhoktṛtve na staḥindriyendriyārthadveṣābhilāṣādikā dṛṣṭayastaddṛṣṭīnāṃ dṛśyante nātaddṛṣṭīnām || 19 ||

This sense of doership seems necessary only because of the delusion of not seeing rightly, not because it is real. When one looks at things exactly as they are, being a doer and being an enjoyer do not exist at all. Feelings such as hatred and craving for the senses and their objects are seen only by those who see things that way. They are not seen by those who do not see things that way.

204.38.20

mokṣo'sti na saṃsāre svasaṃsaktamanasāmihāsaṃsaktamanasāṃ tvetatsarvamevāsti || 20 ||

Those whose minds cling to themselves find no freedom in this world. But for those whose minds do not cling, everything we have spoken of truly exists, right here.

As things truly stand, for the one who has understood, only the single reality of the self shines out. Out of it comes both the two and the one that different thinkers argue about. Out of it comes both being and not being. And it shows itself as holding every power there is, no different from that whole web of powers.

na bandho'sti na mokṣo'sti nābandho'sti na bandhanam | aprabodhādiduḥkhaṃ prabodhātpravilīyate || 22 ||

There is no bondage, and there is no freedom from it. There is no absence of bondage, and there is no binding either. This suffering exists because of not waking up to the truth. Once one wakes up to it, the suffering melts away completely.

The idea of freedom in this world is only imagined, and useless. The idea of bondage in this world is only imagined, and useless too. So give up everything, let go of any sense of I, stand firm in the self, stay steady, and act with wisdom. Rama, live on this way, here on this earth.
