śrīrāma uvāca | mahākalpāntasargādau prathamo'sau prajāpatiḥ | smṛtyātmā jāyate manye smṛtyātmaiva tato jagat || 1 ||

English

Sri Rama said: At the beginning of the great dissolution and creation, I believe that the first Prajapati (lord of creatures) is born with the nature of memory, and from that memory, the world is born.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | mahāpralayasargādāvevametadraghūdvaha | smṛtyātmaiva bhavatyādau prathamo'sau prajāpatiḥ || 2 ||

English

Vasishtha said: O Raghava, at the beginning of the great dissolution and creation, it is indeed so; the first Prajapati is born with the nature of memory.

tatsaṃkalpātmakajagatsmṛtyātmaivamidaṃ tataḥ | bhāti saṃkalpanagaraṃ sthitaṃ pūrvaṃ prajāpateḥ || 3 ||

English

That world, which is of the nature of memory, thus appears from that, like a city of imagination, existing previously in the mind of Prajapati.

smṛtirna saṃbhavatyeva sargādau paramātmanaḥ | janmābhāvātkathaṃ kutra nabhasīva mahādrumaḥ || 4 ||

English

Memory does not exist at the beginning of creation by the Supreme Self, as there is no birth. How can a great tree exist in the sky?

śrīrāma uvāca | na saṃbhavati kiṃ brahman sargādau prāktanī smṛtiḥ | mahāpralayasaṃmohairnaśyati prāksmṛtiḥ katham || 5 ||

English

Sri Rama said: O Brahman, how can the previous memory not exist at the beginning of creation? How can the previous memory be destroyed by the delusions of the great dissolution?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | ye mahāpralaye prājñāḥ sarve brahmādayaḥ purā | kila nirvāṇamāyātāste'vaśyaṃ brahmatāṃ gatāḥ || 6 ||

English

Vasishtha said: All the wise beings, including Brahma and others, who attained liberation during the great dissolution, certainly reached the state of Brahman.

prāktanaḥ kaḥ smṛteḥ kartā tasmātkathaya suvrat | smṛtirnirmūlatāṃ yātā smarturmmuktatayā yataḥ || 7 ||

English

Who was the creator of the ancient memory? Therefore, O virtuous one, explain. Memory has become rootless because the rememberer has attained liberation.

ataḥ smarturabhāvena smṛtirvodeti kiṃ katham | avaśyaṃ hi mahākalpe sarve mokṣaikabhāginaḥ || 8 ||

English

Therefore, how does memory arise without the rememberer? Indeed, in the great cycle, all are partakers of liberation alone.

nānubhūte'nubhūte ca svataścidvyomni yā smṛtiḥ | sā jagadbhūriti prauḍhā dṛśyā sāstyeva citprabhā || 9 ||

English

The memory that exists in the self-luminous consciousness, whether experienced or not, is indeed the expansive universe, visible and luminous.

bhāti saṃvitprabhaiveyam anādyantāvabhāsinī | yattadetajjagaditi svayaṃbhūriti ca sthitam || 10 ||

English

This luminous consciousness shines eternally, without beginning or end. This is what is known as the universe and the self-existent.

anādikālasaṃsiddhaṃ yadbhānaṃ brahmaṇo nijam | sa ātivāhiko deho virājo jagadākṛtiḥ || 11 ||

English

That which is established from the beginningless time, the inherent radiance of Brahman, that is the transcendental body, Viraja, the form of the universe.

paramāṇāvidam bhāti trijagatsavanābhraxam | deśakālakriyādravyadinarātrakramānvitam || 12 ||

English

It shines as the supreme atom, pervading the three worlds, sky, and clouds. It is endowed with place, time, action, substance, day, night, and sequence.

paramāṇuḥ pravitataḥ tasyāste tādṛgeva ca | bhāti bhāsuratākāri tādṛggirikulaṃ punaḥ || 13 ||

English

The supreme atom, having pervaded, exists in that form. It shines, causing illumination, and again, it appears as a mountain range in that form.

tatrāpi tādṛgākāram eva pratyanusantatam | dṛśyam ābhāti bhārūpam etad aṅga na vāstavam || 14 ||

English

Even there, in that form, it appears continuously as a visible form. This form is not real, it is just an appearance.

ityastyanto naṃ saddṛṣṭerasaddṛṣṭeśca vā kvacit | asyāstvabhyuditaṃ buddhaṃ nābuddhaṃ prati vānagha || 15 ||

English

Thus, there is no end to the existence of the real and the unreal. The manifested knowledge of this is understood, not ununderstood, O sinless one.

buddhaṃ pratīdaṃ brahmaiva kevalaṃ śāntamavyayam | abuddhaṃ prati buddhyaitadbhāsuraṃ bhuvanānvitam || 16 ||

English

To the enlightened, this is only the eternal, peaceful Brahman | To the unenlightened, this appears as the luminous, world-filled universe

yathedaṃ bhāsuraṃ bhāti jagadaṇḍakajṛmbhitam | yathā koṭisahasrāṇi bhāntyananyānyapyanāvaṇau || 17 ||

English

Just as this luminous universe appears as a cosmic egg | Similarly, countless other universes shine in the cosmic ocean

yathā stambhe putrikāntastasyāḥ svāṅgeṣu putrikā | tasyāśca putrikāstyāṅge tathā trailokyaputrikā || 18 ||

English

Just as in a pillar, there is a doll, and within that doll, there are other dolls | Similarly, within the three worlds, there are other worlds

nābhinnā nāpi saṃkhyeyā yathādrāu paramāṇukāḥ | tathā brahma bṛhanmerau trailokyaparamāṇavaḥ || 19 ||

English

Just as atoms in a mountain are innumerable and indivisible | Similarly, Brahman in the vast Meru is the ultimate particle of the three worlds

sūryādyaṃśuṣu saṃkhyātuṃ śakyante laghavo'ṇavaḥ | utpadyante cidāditye trailokyaparamāṇavaḥ || 20 ||

English

Just as the rays of the sun are countless and light | Similarly, the ultimate particles of the three worlds arise in the conscious sun

yathāṇavo vahantyarkadīptiṣvapsu rajaḥsu ca | tathā vahanti cidvyomni trailokyaparamāṇavaḥ || 21 ||

English

Just as particles float in the rays of the sun, in water, and in dust, so do the ultimate particles of the three worlds float in the sky of consciousness.

śūnyānubhavamātrātma bhūtākāśamidaṃ yathā | sargānubhavamātrātma cidākāśamidaṃ tathā || 22 ||

English

Just as this physical space is merely the experience of emptiness, so is this consciousness space merely the experience of creation.

sargas tu sargaśabdārthatayā buddho nayaty adhaḥ | sa brahmaśabdārthatayā buddhaḥ śreyo bhavaty alam || 23 ||

English

Creation, when understood as the meaning of the word 'creation,' leads the mind downwards. But when understood as the meaning of the word 'Brahman,' the mind attains the highest good.

vijñānātmā śāsitā viśvabījaṃ brahmaivālaṃ svaṃ cidākāśamātram | yasmājjātaṃ yattadeveti vidyādvedyaṃ svāntarbodhasaṃbodhamātram || 24 ||

English

The knower, the ruler, the seed of the universe, is indeed Brahman itself, its own consciousness space. One should know that whatever is born from it is that itself. The known is merely the awareness within oneself.
