13.90.1

bhānuruvāca | athendreṇaivamuktō'sau rājā rājīvalocanaḥ | muniṃ bharatanāmānaṃ pārśvasaṃsthamuvāca ha || 1 ||

Bhanu said: After Indra had spoken to him in this way, the lotus-eyed king turned and spoke to the sage named Bharata, who was sitting beside him.

rājovāca | bhagavansarvadharmajña pashyāmi sudurātmanaḥ | bhṛśamasyamukhe sphāraṃ dhārṣṭyaṃ maddārahāriṇaḥ || 2 ||

The king said, O lord, you who know all dharma, I see great, open insolence on the face of this very wicked man who has stolen my wife.

pāpānurūpamasyāśu śāpaṃ dehi mahāmune | yadavadhyavadhātpāpaṃ vadhyatyāgāttadeva hi || 3 ||

O great sage, give him at once a curse fitting his sin. The sin of killing someone who should not be killed, and the sin of sparing someone who should be killed, are exactly the same sin.

ityukto rājasimhena bharato munisattamaḥ | yathāvatpravicāryāśu pāpaṃ tasya durātmanaḥ || 4 ||

Spoken to in this way by the lion among kings, Bharata, the best of sages, quickly and properly thought over the sin of that wicked man.

sahānayā duṣkṛtinyā bhartṛdrohābhibhūtayā | vināśaṃ vraja durbuddhe iti śāpaṃ visṛṣṭavān || 5 ||

He pronounced this curse: go to your destruction, you of wicked mind, along with this evil woman who has betrayed her husband.

tataśtau rājabharatau pratyūcatu-ridaṃ vacaḥ| sudurmātī yuvāṃ yābhyāṃ kṣapitaṃ duścaraṃ tapaḥ|| 6||

Then those two replied with this speech to the king and Bharata: you two are very evil-minded, for by you our hard-won austerity, difficult to perform, has been ruined.

anena śāpadānena kiṃcidbhavati nāvayoḥ| dehe naṣṭe na nau kiṃcinnnaśyati svāntarūpayoḥ|| 7||

This curse you have given does nothing at all to us. Even if the body is destroyed, nothing of us two, whose true nature is the inner self, is destroyed.

svāntaṃ hi nahi kenāpi śakyate nāśituṃ kvacit| sūkṣmatvāccinmayatvāccca durdṛṣyatvāccca viddhi nau|| 8||

The inner self can never be destroyed by anyone, anywhere. Know that we two are this way, because we are subtle, because we are made of consciousness, and because we are hard to notice.

śrībhānuruvāca| sughanasnehasaṃbaddhamanaskāveva śāpataḥ| patitau bhūtale vṛkṣavicyutāviva pallavau|| 9||

Shri Bhanu said: their minds bound together by deep, thick love, the two of them fell to the ground because of the curse, like two leaves fallen from a tree.

atha vyasanasaṃsaktau mṛgayonimupāgatau| tato dvāvapi saṃsaktau bhūyo jātau vihaṃgamau|| 10||

Then, still caught in their misfortune, they were born as deer. After that, the two of them, still bound to each other, were born again as birds.

athāsmākaṃ vibho sarge mithaḥsaṃbandhabhāvanau | tapaḥparau mahāpuṇyau jātau brāhmaṇadampatī || 11 ||

Then, O lord, in our own age, still feeling their bond with each other, they were born as a brahmin couple, devoted to austerity and full of great merit.

O lord, even Bharata's curse upon them had power only over their bodies, it could not control their minds.

tāvadyāpi hi tenaiva mohasaṃskārahetunā | yatra yatra prajāyete bhavatastatra dampatī || 13 ||

Even today, because of that same lingering imprint of delusion, wherever the two of them are born, they become husband and wife there.

akṛtrimapremarasānuviddhaṃ snehaṃ tayoste prativīkṣya kāntamvṛkṣā api premarasānuviddhāḥ śṛṅgāraceṣṭākulitā bhavanti || 14 ||

Seeing their affection, steeped in the flavor of true, unfeigned love, even the trees around them become filled with that same flavor of love and grow restless with the gestures of romance.
