bhānuruvāca | mano hi jagatāṃ kartṛ mano hi puruṣaḥ paraḥ | manaḥkṛtaṃ kṛtaṃ loke na śarīrakṛtaṃ kṛtam || 1 ||
Bhanu said, the mind alone creates the worlds; the mind alone is the highest being. What the mind does is counted as done in this world; what the body does is not counted as done.
Having been ordinary brahmins, it is said that through the mind's own imagining, those lunar beings reached the state of Brahma. See here the power of the mind.
Whatever the mind imagines as a body indeed becomes a body. One who is not caught up in the thought I am this body is not troubled by the conditions of the body.
One who looks outward surely feels pleasure and pain and such things, but a yogi who looks inward does not feel the body's likes and dislikes.
śrībrahmovācakāhalyā bhagavanbhāno ko vātrendrastamonudayayorudantaśravaṇe pāvanī dṛṣṭireti hi || 6 ||
Brahma said, who is this Ahalya, lord Bhanu, and who is this Indra here? Hearing the story of these two who dispelled the darkness brings a pure and clear understanding.
That young woman was then won over by lovemaking with him, who was charming with his necklace and armlets, just as a creeper is won over by sweet honey.
Because their love was so thick and deep that they hid nothing, the king heard the story of what they had done wrong, and it stung him bitterly to hear it.
śāsaneṣu ca yatsaṅgo niḥśaṅkastena harṣitau | muhyāvo na mahīpāla svāṅgairapi vikartitaiḥ || 30 ||
whatever fearless closeness we feel during these punishments only makes us happier. O king, even when our own limbs are being cut, we do not lose our senses.
tato bhrāṣṭre parikṣiptāvakhinnāvevameva tau | ūcaturmuditātmānāvanyonyasmṛtiharṣitau || 31 ||
Then, thrown into a roasting pan, still without any distress, the two of them, happy at heart, delighted just by remembering each other, said the very same thing.
grathitau gajapādeṣu na khinnāveva saṃsthitau | evamevocaturbhūpamanyonyasmṛtiharṣitau || 32 ||
Tied at the feet of an elephant, still not distressed at all, they said the very same thing to the king again, delighted just by remembering each other.
Struck with a whip, still not distressed, they said just the same thing again, and this happened again and again with every other punishment the king devised.
Each time they were lifted out and asked, they said the very same thing again and again. Indra said to the king, for me the whole world is made of nothing but my beloved.
the mind that has settled onto something it holds dear stays just as it was. Holding on for a long time to what it wants, the mind remains fixed right there.
tadeva paśyatyacalaṃ na śarīraviceṣṭitam | na kāścana kriyā rājanvaraśāpādikā api || 42 ||
The mind sees only that fixed thing, unmoving, not the movements of the body. No action at all, o king, whether a blessing, a curse, or anything else, touches it.
No action is able to shake a mind that has become filled with such intense force. And when a person is joined with that intense force, he cannot be moved away from what he deeply desires,
Like a mountain scorched by the summer heat, touched at last by a garland of clouds, so is she to me, wherever I am, o king, whether I stand firm or fall,
there, apart from union with the one I want, I feel nothing else at all. The mind called by the name indra is joined with the mind called by the name ahalya's beloved,
na cālyate meruriva varaśāpabalairapi deho hi varaśāpābhyāmanyatvamiva gacchati nanu dhīraṃ mano rājanvijigīṣutayā sthitam || 49 ||
Like Mount Meru, the steady mind is not shaken even by the power of boons or curses; only the body actually turns into something else through a boon or a curse. Is it not so, O king, that the steady mind stays fixed, set on winning its goal?
etāni cātra manasāṃ na ca kāraṇāni rājañśarīraśakalāni vṛthotthitāni cetohi kāraṇamamīṣu śarīrakeṣu vārīva sarvavanakhaṇḍalatāraseṣu || 50 ||
These bodies here are not the cause of minds, O king; bodily fragments arise on their own, without real cause. The mind is in fact the cause behind these small bodies, just as water is the cause of the sap in every plant and vine of the forest.
ādyaṃ śarīramiha viddhi mano mahātmansaṃkalpito jagati tena śarīrasaṅghaḥ ādyaṃ śarīramadhitiṣṭhati yatra yatra tattadbhṛśaṃ phalati netaradasya puṃsaḥ || 51 ||
Know, O great soul, that here the mind is the first body; through the mind's will the whole mass of bodies comes into being in the world. Wherever this first body, the mind, takes its stand, that alone bears strong fruit for this person, nothing else does.
mukhyāṅkuraṃ subhaga viddhi mano hi puṃso dehāstataḥ pravisṛtāstarupallavābhāḥ naṣṭe'ṅkure punarudeti na pallavaśrīrnaivāṅkuraḥ kṣayamupaiti dalakṣayeṣu || 52 ||
Know, fortunate one, that the mind is the main sprout of a person; from it spring out the bodies, like the shoots of a tree. When the sprout dies, the beauty of the leaves does not rise again; but when the leaves die, the sprout itself does not perish.
dehe kṣate vividhadehagaṇaṃ karoti svapnāvanāviva navaṃ navamāśu cetaḥ citte kṣate tu na karoti hi kiṃcideva dehastataḥ samanupālaya cittaratnam || 53 ||
When the body is destroyed, the mind quickly creates a fresh new set of bodies, as if wandering in a dream. But when the mind is destroyed, the body then does nothing at all. So guard well this jewel, the mind.
In every direction, O king, I see only that doe-eyed woman; my mind is fixed on my beloved young woman, and I am always joyful. Whatever painful result belongs to your city and its people, brief or long-lasting, none of it do I see at all.
