13.72.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | sūcī sā saṃbhavadvāṇī cintayitvetyakampanam | punastaddhehalābhāya bhavāmyāśu tapasvinī || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Sūcī, with a voice that rose up within her, thought steadily to herself, "To get that body back again, I shall quickly become an ascetic."

iti saṃcintya cittasthaṃ saṃhṛtya janamāraṇam | tadeva himavacchṛṅgaṃ jagāma tapase sthitam || 2 ||

Thinking this, she held back in her mind the killing of people, and went to that same peak of the Himalaya, settled on doing austerity.

apaśyadeva sūcitvaṃ sā tanmānasamātmani | prāṇavātātmikā prāṇaiḥ praviśya hṛtamānasam || 3 ||

She saw within herself her own needle-nature, that form made only of mind; becoming one with the vital breath, she entered through the breaths with her mind drawn inward.

athātmanyeva sūcitvaṃ paśyatyeva manomayam | prāṇavātaśarīrāsau jagāma himavacchiraḥ || 4 ||

Then, within herself, she saw her needle-form made purely of mind; and with the vital wind itself as her body, she went to the summit of the Himalaya.

dṛḍhadāvānale tatra sarvabhūtavivarjite | mahāmahāśilābhābhārūkṣe pāṃsuvidhūsare || 5 ||

There, where fierce forest fires burned, empty of every living creature, harsh with the look of huge rocks, and grey with dust,

tasthāvabhyuditevāsau nistṛṇe vipule sthale | marāvakasmātsaṃjātaśuṣkā tṛṇaśikhā yathā || 6 ||

on that vast, grassless ground, she stood as if newly risen, like a dry blade of grass that has suddenly sprung up in a desert.

susūkṣmasyaikapādasya sārdhenaivāśritorvarā | svasaṃvidekapādātma tapah kartuṃ pracakrame || 7 ||

Resting on the ground with barely half of one exceedingly thin foot, her very self reduced to a single point of awareness, she began her austerity.

sūkṣmapādatalenaiṣā vasudhāreṇusaṃkaṭī | nivārya tripadīṃ kṛtsnādyatnenordhvamukhī sthitā || 8 ||

Only the fine sole of her foot touched the dust of the earth; with great effort she held her whole foot from resting down fully, and stood there facing upward.

kṛṣṇatvahiṃsratātaikṣṇyavyāptāsyapavanāśanaiḥ | yatnātpadaṃ nibadhnantī reṇvaṇūpalasaṃkaṭe || 9 ||

With effort she planted that foot, blackened, fierce, and sharp-edged, in the crush of dust and grit and pebbles, its mouth as it were living only on the wind.

araṇye kṣubhitā saṃpaddūrālokārthamutthitām | pucchākoṭisthitāṃ vātālolāmanucakāra sā || 10 ||

She looked like some startled creature of the forest that has risen up to peer far into the distance — like the very tip of its tail, trembling in the wind.

mukharandhraviniṣkrāntā tasyā bhāskaradīdhitiḥ | sakhī babhūva sūcyābhā paścādbhāgaikarakṣiṇī || 11 ||

A ray of sunlight that had come out through the opening of her mouth became her friend, bright as a needle, and alone stood guard behind her.

kṣudre'pi svajane bhūte'pyeti vatsalatāṃ janaḥ | dīdhityāpi sakhīvṛttaṃ sūcyāṃ śucitayā bhṛtam || 12 ||

Even toward a lowly creature, if it is one's own, a person feels affection. And that ray of light too, out of its own purity, behaved like a true friend to the needle.

babhūva tasyāḥ svacchāyā dvitīyā tāpasī sakhī | evaṃ sūcīva malinā tayā paścātkṛteva sā || 13 ||

Her own shadow became a second friend in her austerity; and, dark like the needle herself, it seemed to take its place behind her.

sūcyā tayā sunirgatya supātākṣyā sma kūṇitaiḥ | paścātsakhyaabhayā sādhuranyonyācārakevalam || 14 ||

Having come forth clearly from the needle, with eyes half closed, she and her fearless friend behind her lived, after that, only by the way of mutual, good-natured companionship.

sūcyābhirekṣite yātā matiṃ drumalatādayaḥ | mahātapasvinīṃ sūcīṃ dṛṣṭvā notkaṇṭhayanti ke || 15 ||

Under the gaze of the needle, the trees and creepers and everything like them were stirred in their minds. Who, seeing that great ascetic woman Sūcī, would not feel drawn to her?

163.72.16

sthirabaddhapadāmenāṃ svamanoavṛttimutthitām | anilaṃ bhojayāñcakrurmukhanirgatabhāṃkṛtaiḥ || 16 ||

To her — her foot held perfectly still, standing there as nothing but a movement of her own mind — they fed the wind, with humming sounds coming out of their mouths.

prasūtāni bhaviṣyāṇi gīrvāṇānyāni vā ciram | kausumāni rajāṃsyasyā ityāsyaṃ paryapūrayan || 17 ||

With flowers already bloomed, flowers yet to bloom, and even heavenly ones — for a long time they kept filling her mouth with the pollen of such blossoms.

Then Indra sent dust, driven like an arrow by the wind. Under the guise of a cloud it entered her mouth, but she did not swallow it.

na nigīrṇavatī tāni rajāṃsi dṛḍhaniścayāt | antaḥsāratayā kāryaṃ laghavo'pyāpnuvanti hi || 19 ||

She did not swallow that dust, holding firm to her resolve — for indeed even small things achieve great results through their inner strength.

na pibatyāsyasaṃsthāni tathā puṣparajāṃsyapi | vismayaṃ pavanaḥ prāpa sumerūnmūlanādhikam || 20 ||

She would not swallow even the flower pollen resting in her mouth. The wind was more astonished at this than it had been at uprooting Mount Sumeru.

āśiraḥ pihitā paṅkaiḥ pūritāpi mahājalaiḥ | vidhūtāpi bṛhadvātairdagdhāpi vanavahnibhiḥ || 21 ||

Though covered up to her head in mud, though flooded by great waters, though battered by mighty winds, though burned by forest fires,

bhinnāpi karakāpāterbhrāmitāpi taḍidbhramaiḥ | udvejitāpi jaladaiḥ kṣobhitāpyatigarjitaiḥ || 22 ||

though struck and broken by falling hail, though whirled about by flashes of lightning, though frightened by storm clouds, though shaken by their loud thunder,

api varṣasahasraiḥ sā cittasthadṛḍhaniścayā | pādāgraṃ tu kusupteva nākampata tapasvinī || 23 ||

even through thousands of years, she — her resolve fixed firmly in her mind — the ascetic woman did not tremble, not even the tip of her foot, as if she were fast asleep.

nivṛttāyā bahiḥspandādddeśakāle bahau gate | vicārayantyāstasyāḥ svamātmā satyaṃ sucetanam || 24 ||

When she had ceased all outward movement, and a long stretch of time and place had passed, she remained inquiring within, searching for her own self, the truth, pure consciousness.

jñānālokaḥ samudabhūtsā parāvaradarśinī | babhūva nirmalā sūcirviṣūcī pāvanaṃ param || 25 ||

The light of knowledge rose up in her, and she became one who could see both the high and the low, all things as they truly are. Suchi grew pure and spotless, present in every direction, supremely purifying.

jātā viditavedyā sā svayameva tayā dhiyā | tapasā duṣkṛte kṣīṇe sūcī svasukhasūcinī || 26 ||

By her own understanding, all by herself, she came to know everything that is to be known. When her past bad deeds were burned away by her austerity, Suchi became one who showed forth her own inner happiness.

iti varṣasahasrāṇi sākarodāruṇaṃ tapaḥ | saptasaptamahālokasantāpakaramunmukhī || 27 ||

In this way she performed harsh austerity for thousands of years, intent on scorching the seven great worlds again and again.

tasyāḥ kalpāgnibhīmena tapasā hi mahāgiriḥ | babhūva tena jvalito jajvāleve tato jagat || 28 ||

Her austerity was as fearsome as the fire that ends an age. Because of it a great mountain caught fire, and then the whole world seemed to blaze.

kasyedaṃ tapasākrāntaṃ jagadityatha vāsavaḥ | nāradaṃ paripapraccha sa tasyākathayacca tat || 29 ||

Then Indra asked Narada, 'Whose austerity has overwhelmed this world like this?' And Narada told him.

saptavarṣasahasrāṇi sūcī dīrghatapasvinī | mahāvijñānadehāsau tenedaṃ jvalitaṃ jagat || 30 ||

For seven thousand years Suchi has carried on this long austerity; her very body is made of great knowledge. Because of her, this world has caught fire.

nāgāḥ śvasanti vicalanti nagāḥ patanti vaimānikā jaladhivāridharāḥ prayānti | śoṣaṃ diśo'rkasahitā malinībhavanti sūcyāḥ surendra tapasā kṣayamāyayeva || 31 ||

O lord of the gods, the serpents hiss and gasp, the mountains shake and fall, those who travel the sky and the clouds carrying the ocean's water flee away, the directions turn parched and even the sun grows dim. All this is from Suchi's austerity, as if the world were nearing its end.
