Sri Vasishtha said, Contentment is indeed the highest good. Contentment is called happiness. O slayer of enemies, the contented person reaches the greatest rest.
santoṣāmṛtapānena ye śāntāstṛptimāgatāḥ | bhogaśrīratulā teṣāmeṣā prativiṣāyate || 4 ||
Those who, by drinking the nectar of contentment, have grown peaceful and satisfied, find that even the finest, unmatched pleasures of the world turn into poison next to it.
One who gives up longing for what has not come, who meets what has come with an even mind, and who stays untroubled even by trouble not yet seen, such a person is here called content.
āśāvaivaśyavivaśe citte saṃtoṣavarjitemlāne vakramivādarśe na jñānaṃ pratibimbati || 9 ||
In a mind ruled helplessly by desire, empty of contentment and dull, knowledge does not show itself clearly, just as a face does not show clearly in a warped mirror.
Even a man who has nothing at all enjoys the happiness of an empire, if his mind is content and free from both mental worry and bodily illness.
For one who is full of the nectar of contentment, with a peaceful, cool mind, the mind itself becomes steady forever, like the steadiness of the cool moon.
When a person stands settled and content within himself, by himself, all his mental troubles quickly settle down, like dust settling in the rainy season.
samatāsundaraṃ vakraṃ puruṣasyāvalokayan | toṣameti yathā loko na tathā dhanasaṃcayaiḥ || 19 ||
Looking at a person's face, made beautiful by an even and calm mind, people find satisfaction the way they naturally do, they do not find that same satisfaction by piling up wealth.
O joy of the Raghus, before the best of men here, fully adorned with the evenness of mind that virtuous people value, that spotless man, even the beings who move through the sky and the great sages bow down.
