Sri Vasishtha said, With a mind made completely clean and pure by understanding the scriptures, the man who knows the true cause should constantly inquire into himself.
mohena bandhunāśeṣu saṅkaṭeṣu śameṣu ca | sarvaṃ vyāptaṃ mahāprājña vicāro hi satāṃ gatiḥ || 4 ||
O greatly wise one, delusion spreads everywhere, in the loss of kinsmen, in dangers, and even in times of peace. Inquiry alone is the way for good people.
By relying on inquiry, the great lamp that shows what is right and what is wrong and gets a person what they want, wide and full, one should cross the ocean of worldly life.
In the forest that is the fool's heart stand the karanja trees called Non-inquiry, the very first to block hope, and their flower-clusters are nothing but the many forms of suffering.
In the longest and greatest calamities, a man devoted to true inquiry does not sink into delusion, just as a mass of light does not sink into darkness.
For the man whose mind, empty of inquiry, has grown dull, a thunderbolt seems to rise where the moon should rise, for no reason at all, like a child seeing a spirit.
He is a small piece of suffering, not something great, sweetness that has turned to ruin. O Rama, keep him far away and give him up, this man without discernment, the lowest of men.
ye kecana durārambhā durācārā durādhayaḥ | avicāreṇa te bhānti vetālāstamasā yathā || 19 ||
Whoever starts out badly, behaves badly, and thinks badly, all such people seem impressive only where there is no inquiry, just as ghosts seem real only in the dark.
vivekaṃ hi mano jantorāśāvaivaśyavarjitam | parāṃ nirvṛtimabhyeti pūrṇacandra ivātmani || 21 ||
When a creature's mind becomes clear and pure, free from being helplessly ruled by desire, it reaches the highest peace within itself, like a full moon complete in itself.
Once discernment rises in the body, it cools everything completely and beautifies it fully, just as moonlight cools and beautifies the world.
O living being, inquiry shines like the white fan beside the banner of the intellect that stands for the highest truth, the way the moon shines at night.
Know this state of being alone and complete, which is even, happy, free from any hurt, endless, and needing no support, as the fruit of the tall tree of inquiry.
acalasthititodārā prakaṭābhogatejasā| tena niṣkāmatodeti śītatēvēndunoditā || 29 ||
Desirelessness grows vast through its own unshaken steadiness, shining with a full and open splendor. It rises through that same inquiry, the way coolness rises with the risen moon.
With the great medicine that is one's own inquiry, well settled in the mind and granting the highest state, a person neither craves anything nor rejects anything.
tatpadālambanaṃ cetaḥ sphāramābhāsamāgatam| nāstameti na codeti khamivātitatāntaram || 31 ||
The mind that rests on that highest state, having grown vast yet remaining only an appearance, neither sets nor rises, like the sky, which is vast without any real inside or outside.
na dadāti na cādatte na cunnamati śāmyati| kevalaṃ sākṣivatpaśyañjagadābhogi tiṣṭhati || 32 ||
It does not give, it does not take, it does not swell up with pride, it stays calm. It simply remains, watching like a witness, embracing the whole world.
na ca śāmyati nāpyantarnāpi bāhye'vatiṣṭhati| na ca naiṣkarmyamādatte na ca karmaṇi majjati || 33 ||
And it does not merely become calm, nor does it stay only inside or only outside. It does not take up inaction, and it does not sink into action either.
upekṣate gataṃ vastu saṃprāptamanuvartate| na kṣubdho na ca vā'kṣubdho bhāti pūrṇa ivārṇavaḥ || 34 ||
It has no concern for what has already gone, and it goes along with whatever comes. Neither disturbed nor undisturbed, it shines like a full, brimming ocean.
In this way, with a mind that has become whole, great souls of noble mind live as liberated persons even while alive. Such yogis wander here in this world.
Even in trouble, a wise man must, with effort, think for himself about the question, who am I, and whose is this worldly life, in a way that finds the remedy.
The settled conclusions of the Veda and the Vedanta, and the reason behind their authority, are decided only through inquiry, just as things on the ground at night are made out only by a lamp.
Even in the deepest darkness, inquiry, that beautiful eye, is never lost. It can still see a hidden thing even when that thing has turned its own great light away.
One who is blind in discernment is truly blind from birth, pitiable, and wrong-minded in everyone's eyes. But one whose very self is discernment, having a divine eye, wins over all things.
This wonder that is inquiry, made of the highest self, worthy of respect, and the one sure way to reach the greatest bliss, should not be given up even for a single moment.
A sick man, even one broken by a hundred misfortunes, does not cry out as much as an ignorant man wails, one whose self has been ruined by not thinking things through.
Better to become one with mud, better to become a worm in filth, better to live as a snake in a dark cave, than for a man to have no inquiry.
One should give up not thinking things through. It is the very home of every misfortune, scorned by every good person, and the outer edge of every kind of misery.
A great soul should always be full of inquiry, for to those who are falling into a dark, hidden well, inquiry alone is the thing to hold on to.
By himself, holding himself steady through his own self by means of inquiry, a man should carry his own mind, which is like a deer, safely across the ocean of the delusion of worldly life.
The heart of a foolish man who never inquires becomes a heart of stone, a storehouse of the blindest delusion, kept only for long, lasting suffering.
bhāvābhāvagrahotsargadṛśāmiha hi rāghava | na vicārādṛte tattvaṃ jñāyate sādhu kiṃcana || 52 ||
O Raghava, here in this world, for those who see things only by grabbing on to some as real and throwing off others as unreal, no truth at all is properly known without inquiry.
Through inquiry the truth is known, from the truth comes rest within the self, and from that comes peace in the mind and the complete end of all suffering.
saphalatā phalate bhuvi karmaṇāṃ prakaṭatāṃ kila gacchati uttamām | sphuṭavicāradṛśaiva vicāritā śamavate bhavate ca virocataṃ || 54 ||
May the fruitfulness of actions, judged only by the clear eye of inquiry, come out fully and reach its highest form on this earth, and may it shine for the person who is at peace and for the person still caught up in worldly life.
