Sri Vasishtha said: You are full of understanding and worthy of respect, and you know how to ask, Raghava. You also grasp at once what is said. That is why I have set out to speak to you with care.
In you is present the whole range of qualities a questioner should have, and in me are the qualities of a teacher, just as the glory of jewels is present in the ocean.
You have gained, my son, the dispassion that is born from discernment and detachment, just as the moonstone gains its moistness when touched by a flood of moonbeams.
For a long time, ever since childhood, you have practiced good qualities that are pure and unbroken, continuing on and on, like the long, unbroken fibers inside a clean lotus stem.
ataḥ śṛṇu kathāṃ vakṣye tvamevāsyā hi bhājanam| na hi candraṃ vinā śuddhā savikāsā kumudvatī || 6 ||
So listen to the teaching I am about to give. You alone are fit to receive it. After all, without the moon, a bed of white water-lilies cannot open into pure bloom.
ye kecana samārambhā yāśca kāścana dṛṣṭayaḥ| te ca tāśca pade dṛṣṭe niḥśeṣe yānti vai śamam || 7 ||
Whatever efforts a person makes, and whatever ways of seeing he holds, all of them, without exception, come to complete rest once that highest state is seen.
If a person of good mind could not find rest in true understanding, then who among the wise could bear the foolish anxiety of this life of birth and death?
When a person reaches the Highest, all the movements of thought melt away, just as, at the end of an age, the rocks of the great mountains melt when the mass of blazing suns strikes them.
Rama, this unbearable illness, the poison of worldly life striking like a violent cholera, is calmed only by the purifying Garuda-mantra of yoga, the very mantra used to cure snake poison.
You must understand that once real inquiry is carried out, all suffering is completely destroyed. So the insights that come from such inquiry should never be treated with contempt or ignored.
A person who has practiced true inquiry casts off this whole cage of mental anguish, as a snake sheds its worn-out skin. Free from feverish desire, with a cool and quiet heart, and with right insight, such a person watches the whole world playfully, as if it were a magic show. But for one who lacks this right insight, this same world is nothing but the greatest suffering.
This passion for worldly life is extremely dangerous. It bites like a snake, cuts like a sword, pierces like a spear, coils around like a rope, burns like fire, blinds like the night. Like a rock falling on men who never suspected it, it makes them completely helpless. It steals away good sense, destroys inner steadiness, throws them into the blind well of delusion, and craving grinds them down. There is no suffering at all that a worldly person does not end up facing.
duranteyaṃ kila viṣayaviṣūcikā yadi na cikitsyate tannitaraṃ narakanagaranikaraphalānubandhinī tattatkaroti || 15 ||
This plague of sense-desire truly has no end. If it is not treated, it only grows worse, and its fruit is a whole heap of hells. It goes on causing every kind of harm.
Where there is the fall of a sword sharpened on stone, the beating with rocks, the burning by fire, the drenching in ice, the cutting away of limbs, forests where the body is smeared with sandal paste, the wood-worm's endless boring passage inside, the wiping down of the limbs, the ceaseless rain of iron arrows shaken loose by fire in battle, the relief that comes at the peak of summer heat, the fine spray of water from a cooling fountain-house, the cutting off of the head, the silencing that looks like sweet sleep, and the charm of a graceful expression on the face, all of this grows to a great abundance.
So, Raghava, in this ever-turning machine of worldly life, terrible with a thousand kinds of painful struggles, you must never be careless. You must hold yourself firm, and understand clearly that only through inquiry into right teaching does true good come.
What then of ordinary people, O moon of the Raghu race? Even these great sages, great seers, brahmins, and kings, though their bodies are shielded by the armor of true knowledge, are not free from suffering. Yet even while going through this or that painful hardship that worldly life brings through their different roles, they remain always joyful in mind.
iha hi vikautukā vigatavikalpaviplavā yathā sthitā hariharapadmajādayaḥ narōttamāḥ samadhigatātmadīpakāstathā sthitā jagati viśuddhabuddhayaḥ || 19 ||
Just as Hari, Hara, and Brahma the lotus-born, and other best of men, stand free from restless curiosity and untouched by the storm of doubt, having found the lamp of the Self within, so too, in this world, do people of purified understanding remain.
When delusion has worn away, when the dense cloud of knowledge has done its work and dissolved, when the truth has been fully understood, when a person has reached the vast Self, having reflected together with the wise, even though the body still moves about just as before, once truth is seen by the intellect, this wandering in the world becomes mere play.
And there is more, Raghava. When the mind's true nature turns clear, when peace rises in the heart, when the Supreme moves freely within, and every sight of activity in front of you turns peaceful, then the joy tasted through the workings of your own inner mind flows on evenly, undisturbed. Once truth is seen by the intellect, this wandering through the world becomes nothing but play.
And another thing: the body is a cart that by itself cannot move; the movement of the senses is like the team of horses pulling it; the stir of the breath is the wind that drives it; the objects of enjoyment are what this vehicle carries along. Whether the self within is the Supreme or a mere atom-like individual soul, it is with a pure, faultless mind that one thinks, I am moving about in the world. But once truth is seen by the intellect, this wandering in the world is nothing but play.
