Sri Vasishtha said: I have now told you everything — how this knowledge came down to earth, and also my own story, along with what the lotus-born Brahma did.
Sri Rama said: Brahmin, how was it that, right after creation, the mind of the divine lord Brahma turned toward bringing knowledge down into the world?
Sri Vasishtha said: Out of the supreme Brahman, Brahma was born on his own, simply by the force of his own nature — a being made of motion, the way a wave keeps rising in the ocean.
When the age of right action, beginning with the Krita Yuga, had come to its end, and its whole order was falling apart, the lord looked closely at the confusion of the people and felt compassion for them.
Just as I was sent by him, in the same way many other great sages were sent too — Sanatkumara chief among them, and Narada and others, a great many of them.
They were sent to rescue the world, which was tied down by the sickness of confusion in the mind — some through the right way of righteous action, and some through the right way of knowledge.
So, long ago, when the Krita Yuga had ended, and the pure order of right action on earth had gradually grown thin, those great sages did the following —
So, to end their misery and to give them a right way of seeing things, we sages — myself among the first — taught them great teachings, ways of seeing through knowledge.
This knowledge of the Self was taught first among kings in this way. After that it spread through the world, and it came to be called 'the king's knowledge.'
Knowing this royal knowledge — the king's secret, the highest knowledge of the Self — kings reached, Raghava, the highest state, completely free of suffering.
Indeed, Rama, for anyone at all — even for a good and discerning person — dispassion usually arises because of some cause, and such dispassion is of the restless, passion-tinged kind.
But this dispassion of yours has arisen without any outside cause. It is something new, never seen before, truly astonishing — the pure kind, born only from your own inner discernment.
Who does not turn away in dispassion after seeing something disgusting? But for the truly good, the highest dispassion is born from discernment alone, with no such trigger needed.
parāmṛśya vivekenasaṃsāraracanāmimām | vairāgyaṃ ye'dhigacchanti ta eva puruṣottamāḥ || 26 ||
Those who look closely, with discernment, at this whole construction called worldly life, and thereby reach dispassion — they alone are the best of men.
By the strength of your own discernment alone, think about this again and again, and by force give up this whole magic-show of a world, both outside and inside.
Who does not feel dispassion at the sight of a cremation ground, a disaster, or someone in misery? But the dispassion that arises all by itself, with no such cause, is the highest good.
You have fully attained both natural dispassion and true greatness. You are fit to receive the essence of knowledge, the way soft, fertile ground is fit for a seed.
when one's bad deeds have finally worn away, the mind of a person turns, purely by chance, the way a crow lands on a branch just as its fruit happens to fall, toward inquiry into the highest truth.
People devoted only to ritual action stay caught in whirlpool after whirlpool, wandering around here, for as long as they fail to see the highest state.
Seeing this world exactly as it really is, and giving up the mind that clings to it, they go on to the highest state — like elephants set free from the post that once tied them.
Only by the raft of the true method of knowledge have the truly wise crossed the ocean of worldly life — an ocean very hard to cross — crossing it in the blink of an eye, best of the Raghus.
Because the fears of suffering that belong to this world are endless and fierce, and without this flawless method they keep burning a person from within for a very long time.
Raghava, without the power of knowledge, how could the pairs of suffering — cold, wind, heat, and the rest — ever become bearable, even for good people?
But such worries cannot burn a wise man, one who has understood what needs to be understood and who sees things rightly — just as a tongue of fire cannot burn a forest soaked by the monsoon rains.
Even when the desert storm-wind of worldly life rages, whirling with troubles of mind and body, one who knows the truth is not broken by it — like a wish-granting tree that never breaks.
So, to know the truth, a wise person should make the effort to question — with real respect and warmth — another wise person, one who is trustworthy and truly awake.
The man who first judges, by how a person actually acts, whether that person is ignorant or truly knows the truth, and only then asks his question — that questioner has real intelligence.
But a foolish person who asks his question without first judging the teacher is the lowest kind of questioner, and is not fit to receive anything of real value.
A wise man should answer a question only when it is asked by someone whose mind can properly connect what comes before and after, and who is of good character — not by a low person who behaves like an animal.
prāmāṇikārthayogyatvaṃ pracchakasyāvicārya ca | yo vakti tamihaprājñāḥ prāhurmūḍhataraṃ naram || 50 ||
And the wise call a person an even greater fool if he answers without first checking whether the one asking is trustworthy and fit to receive it.
tvamatīva guṇaślāghī pracchako raghunandana | ahaṃ ca vaktuṃ jānāmi samo yogo'yamāvayoṃ || 51 ||
You, joy of the Raghu line, are a truly excellent questioner, full of good qualities, and I know how to answer well. So this match between the two of us is a fitting one.
So, you who understand the meaning of words so well, whatever I tell you, hold it firmly and completely in your heart, deciding for yourself, 'This is the real truth.'
You are a great soul, you are free of worldly attachment, and you already know the truth even while living your daily life. Whatever is told to you sinks deep inside and stays there, the way saffron dye sinks into cloth.
Your mind pays complete attention to what is said and can tell apart the highest truth. It enters into the meaning the way sunlight enters deep into water.
mano hi capalaṃ rāma saṃsāravanaṃarkaṭam | saṃśodhya hṛdi yatnena śrotavyā paramārthagīḥ || 56 ||
For the mind, Rama, is restless, like a monkey swinging through the forest of this world. Purify it carefully within your heart, and only then listen to this speech about the highest truth.
Keep well away, for good, from a person who lacks judgment, who is ignorant, and who enjoys the company of bad people. Good people, on the other hand, are truly worth honoring.
Discernment is always born from keeping company with good people. And enjoyment and liberation, we are told, are the two fruits that grow on the tree of discernment.
These should be cultivated with real effort — all four of them, or two, or three. They are the ones who open the door to the great house of liberation.
Or, with all your effort — even at the cost of your very life — take hold of just one of these four. Because once one of them is under your control, all four come under your control.
A person with discernment is a true vessel for scripture, knowledge, austerity, and sacred learning — indeed their very ornament — just as the sun is the greatest among all sources of light.
But you, Raghava, with your good nature, your virtues, and your insight into the meaning of the scriptures, stand with your heart wide open — like a lotus opening at sunrise.
Good-hearted one, you deserve to hear and to truly understand this speech of knowledge, listening with ears wide open — the way a wild creature turns its ears toward the sound of a lute.
First, through real austerity and self-control, joined with the study of scripture and the company of good people, one should grow one's own wisdom, in order to become free from this world.
Know that the best way to destroy this foolishness is simply this: to look at this teaching, even a little, with a mind that has been properly trained.
This world is a poison tree, and it is the one true source of every misfortune. It keeps confusing the person who does not understand. One must work hard to destroy this foolishness.
When foolishness moves through the heart like a snake made of false hope, the mind shrinks and shrivels up — the way a piece of leather curls up when it is put into fire.
In a wise person, this true way of seeing things becomes clear — like the sight of the moon becomes clear in a cloudless, perfectly spotless sky.
pūryāpavicārārthaścāstvāturyaśālinī | savikāsā matiryasya sa pumāniha kathyate || 72 ||
One whose mind eagerly examines the full meaning of things, looking at what came before and what comes after, and whose understanding has thus blossomed open — that is who is truly called a man here.
With a heart that has opened wide, that is bright and free of all darkness, cool and radiant from deep and excellent reflection, and rich in good qualities, you shine forth, spotless — just as the moon shines in the sky.
