Sri Vasishtha said: The truth about Brahman, exactly as it stands, is called the fixed order of all being. That same order is what makes a teacher a teacher, and it is what makes a pupil a pupil.
ataḥ pauruṣamāśritya śreyase nityabāndhavam | ekāgraṃ kuru taccittaṃ śṛṇu coktamidaṃ mama || 2 ||
So, relying on your own effort — the true friend that always helps toward the highest good — make your mind one-pointed, and listen to what I tell you.
The senses keep falling on one passing thing after another, carried away by their own wishful fancy. Restrain them quickly through effort, and bring your mind to a state of even balance.
I will now speak of a treatise made of pure essence — the means to freedom — one that gives the fruit of life's true purpose, and that brings success both in this world and in the next.
Inwardly give up, for good, the old pull toward worldly life, so that it never returns. With a generous mind, take up calm and contentment, both in full.
Make your mind — steadied by weighing the meaning of the scriptures, looking at what comes before and after — even and calm, joined constantly with inquiry into the Self.
imāṃ mokṣakathāṃ śrutvā saha sarvairvivekibhiḥ | paraṃ yāsyasi nirdhuḥkhaṃ nāśo yatra na vidyate || 8 ||
When you have heard this teaching about freedom — together with all who have this same understanding — you will reach that highest state, free of all sorrow, where nothing is ever destroyed.
This teaching was first spoken long ago, in an earlier age, by Brahma, the highest lord. It destroys all sorrow and gives the deepest comfort and true well-being.
Sri Vasishtha said: There is one whose very nature is endless, playful expansion — present everywhere, the shelter of everything, the space of pure consciousness, never perishing, the light shining inside every living being.
From that being, whose form holds both movement and stillness together, Vishnu was born — just as a wave rises from the sea, out of its full, flowing water.
From the lotus of his heart — a lotus whose seed-pod is Mount Meru, whose petals are the directions of space, and whose threads are the stars — Brahma, the highest lord, was born.
He, the knower of the Vedas and their meaning, surrounded by a great gathering of divine sages, created this whole universe as a flood of imagined forms, just as the mind creates its flow of thoughts.
In this creation, the bodies of all kinds of living beings were worn down by the coming and going of birth and death, always about to be struck by disaster, and crowded with many kinds of misfortune.
He thought: 'What could end the suffering of these unlucky people, whose lives are being wasted?' He pondered this closely, for a moment, for their good.
saṃsārottaraṇe jantorupāyo jñānameva hi | tapo dānaṃ tathā tīrthamanupāyāḥ prakīrtitāḥ || 22 ||
To cross over this worldly life, the only real means for a person is knowledge. Austerity, giving, and pilgrimage are said not to be means to that end.
As soon as I came into being from somewhere, I appeared at once before that father of mine — quickly, the way one wave follows another wave, sinless Rama.
That lord held a water-pot, and I too held a water-pot; he held a string of prayer-beads, and I too held a string of prayer-beads. I bowed down and greeted him.
He told me this knowledge at great length — knowing it makes a person supremely pure. It seems I had become the special aim of my father's purpose in teaching it.
Then, seeing that I had learned what was to be learned and was now settled in my own true nature, he — the maker of the world, the one who reveals the cause of all things — spoke to me:
'By my curse, son, I brought you to a state of not-knowing, and made you the one who asks — so that, through this essence of knowledge, all people could gain success.'
'Now that the curse is over, you have reached the highest awakening. I remain present in you as one and the same — the way one piece of gold is the same as another piece of gold.'
kartavyamasti na mameha hi kiṃcideva sthātavyamityatimanā bhuvi saṃsthito'smi | saṃśāntayā satatasuptadhiyeha vṛtyā kārya karomi na ca kiṃcidahaṃ karomi || 44 ||
I have nothing at all that I must do here, yet, thinking 'one must still remain,' with a mind that has gone beyond all this, I stay on this earth. Living calmly, my mind always at complete rest as if asleep, I carry out my task — and yet I do nothing at all.
