vālmīkiruvāca tacchrutvā vacanaṃ tasya snehaparyākulekṣaṇam samanyuḥ kauśiko vākyaṃ pratyuvāca mahīpatim || 1 ||
Valmiki said: After hearing the king's words, whose eyes were troubled with love, Kaushika, filled with anger, spoke back to the king.
वाल्मीकि ने कहा राजा की बात सुनकर, जिसकी आँखें प्रेम से भर आई थीं, कौशिक गुस्से से भर गए और राजा को जवाब दिया।
करिष्यामीति संश्रुत्य प्रतिज्ञां हातुमर्हसि स भवान्केसरी भूत्वा मृगतामिव वाञ्छसि || २ ||
kariṣyāmīti saṃśrutya pratijñāṃ hātumarhasi sa bhavānkesarī bhūtvā mṛgatāmiva vāñchasi || 2 ||
You had promised, "I will do it." You should not go back on that promise. You were like a lion, and now you wish to become like a deer.
तुमने वादा किया था, "मैं यह करूँगा।" अब तुम्हें अपना वादा नहीं तोड़ना चाहिए। तुम शेर की तरह थे, और अब हिरण जैसा बनना चाहते हो।
राघवाणामयुक्तोऽयं कुलस्यास्य विपर्ययः न कदाचन जायन्ते शीतांशोरुष्णरश्मयः || ३ ||
rāghavāṇāmayukto'yaṃ kulasya'sya viparyayaḥ na kadācana jāyante śītāṃśoruṣṇaraśmayaḥ || 3 ||
This going back on your word does not suit the family of the Raghus. Cool moonbeams never turn into hot sun rays.
अपनी बात से मुकर जाना रघुवंश को शोभा नहीं देता। ठंडी चाँदनी कभी गरम धूप नहीं बनती।
यदि त्वं न क्षमो राजन्गमिष्यामि यथागतम् हीनप्रतिज्ञ काकुत्स्थ सुखी भव सबान्धवः || ४ ||
yadi tvaṃ na kṣamo rājan gamiṣyāmi yathāgatam hīnapratijña kākutstha sukhī bhava sabāndhavaḥ || 4 ||
If you are not able to keep your word, O king, I will go back the way I came. Kakutstha, you who broke your promise, be happy with your family.
हे राजा, अगर तुम अपना वादा नहीं निभा सकते, तो मैं जैसे आया था वैसे ही वापस चला जाऊँगा। हे ककुत्स्थ, तुमने अपना वादा तोड़ दिया, अब अपने परिवार के साथ सुखी रहो।
वाल्मीकिरुवाच तस्मिन्कोपपरीतेऽथ विश्वामित्रे महात्मनि चचाल वसुधा कृत्स्ना सुरांश्च भयमाविशत् || ५ ||
vālmīkiruvāca tasmin kopaparīte'tha viśvāmitre mahātmani cacāla vasudhā kṛtsnā surāṃśca bhayamāviśat || 5 ||
Valmiki said: When the great soul Vishvamitra was overcome with anger, the whole earth shook, and fear entered the gods.
वाल्मीकि ने कहा जब महान विश्वामित्र गुस्से से भर गए, तो पूरी धरती काँप उठी और देवताओं में डर समा गया।
क्रोधाभिभूतं विज्ञाय जगन्मित्रं महामुनिम् | धृतिमान्सुव्रतो धीमान्वसिष्ठो वाक्यमब्रवीत् || ६ ||
krodhābhibhūtaṃ vijñāya jagannmitraṃ mahāmunim | dhṛtimānsuvrato dhīmānvasiṣṭho vākyamabravīt || 6 ||
Realizing that the great sage, friend of the whole world, was overcome with anger, Vasishtha, who was steady, true to his vows, and wise, spoke these words.
यह जानकर कि पूरी दुनिया के मित्र, वह महान ऋषि, गुस्से से भर गए हैं, वसिष्ठ ने, जो धैर्यवान, अपने व्रत के पक्के और बुद्धिमान थे, यह बात कही।
वसिष्ठ उवाच | इक्ष्वाकूणां कुले जातः साक्षाद्धर्म इवापरः | भवान्दशरथः श्रीमांस्त्रैलोक्यगुणभूषितः || ७ ||
vasiṣṭha uvāca | ikṣvākūṇāṃ kule jātaḥ sākṣāddharma ivāparaḥ | bhavāndaśarathaḥ śrīmāṃstrailokyaguṇabhūṣitaḥ || 7 ||
Vasishtha said: You were born in the family of the Ikshvakus, and you are like dharma itself in another form. You, Dasharatha, are glorious, adorned with the good qualities of all three worlds.
वसिष्ठ ने कहा तुम इक्ष्वाकु वंश में पैदा हुए हो, और तुम मानो साक्षात धर्म ही हो। हे दशरथ, तुम तेजस्वी हो, और तीनों लोकों के अच्छे गुणों से सजे हो।
धृतिमान्सुव्रतो भूत्वा न धर्मं हातुमर्हसि | त्रिषु लोकेषु विख्यातो धर्मेण यशसा युतः || ८ ||
dhṛtimānsuvrato bhūtvā na dharmaṃ hātumarhasi | triṣu lokeṣu vikhāto dharmeṇa yaśasā yutaḥ || 8 ||
Being steady and true to your vows, you should not abandon dharma. You are famous in all three worlds, known for your dharma and your good name.
धैर्यवान और अपने व्रत के पक्के होकर, तुम्हें धर्म नहीं छोड़ना चाहिए। तुम तीनों लोकों में मशहूर हो, अपने धर्म और अपनी अच्छी प्रतिष्ठा के लिए जाने जाते हो।
स्वधर्मं प्रतिपद्यस्व न धर्मं हातुमर्हसि | मुनेस्त्रिभुवनेशस्य वचनं कर्तुमर्हसि || ९ ||
svadharmaṃ pratipadyasva na dharmaṃ hātumarhasi | munestribhuvaneśasya vacanaṃ kartumarhasi || 9 ||
Take up your own duty; you should not abandon dharma. You should do what this sage, the lord of the three worlds, has asked.
अपना कर्तव्य निभाओ; तुम्हें धर्म नहीं छोड़ना चाहिए। इस ऋषि की बात माननी चाहिए, जो तीनों लोकों के स्वामी हैं।
करिष्यामीति संश्रुत्य तत्ते राजन्नकुर्वतः | इष्टापूर्तं हरेद्धर्मं तस्माद्रामं विसर्जय || १० ||
kariṣyāmīti saṃśrutya tatte rājannakurvataḥ | iṣṭāpūrtaṃ harēddharmaṃ tasmādrāmaṃ visarjaya || 10 ||
O king, you promised, "I will do it." If you do not do that, dharma will take away the merit of your sacrifices and your charitable works. So send Rama away with him.
हे राजा, तुमने वादा किया था, "मैं यह करूँगा।" अगर तुम वह नहीं करते, तो धर्म तुम्हारे यज्ञों और तुम्हारे दान-पुण्य के फल छीन लेगा। इसलिए राम को इनके साथ भेज दो।
इक्ष्वाकुवंशजातोऽपि स्वयं दशरथोऽपि सन् | न पालयसि चेद्वाक्यं कोऽपरः पालयिष्यति || ११ ||
ikṣvākuvaṃśajāto'pi svayaṃ daśaratho'pi san | na pālayasi cedvākyaṃ ko'paraḥ pālayiṣyati || 11 ||
You were born in the Ikshvaku family, and you yourself are Dasharatha. If you do not keep your word, who else will keep his?
तुम इक्ष्वाकु वंश में पैदा हुए हो, और तुम खुद दशरथ हो। अगर तुम अपनी बात नहीं निभाओगे, तो और कौन निभाएगा?
युष्मदादिप्रणीतेन व्यवहारेण जन्तवः | मर्यादां न विमुञ्चन्ति तां न हातुं त्वमर्हसि || १२ ||
yuṣmadādipraṇītena vyavahāreṇa jantavaḥ | maryādāṃ na vimuñcanti tāṃ na hātuṃ tvamarhasi || 12 ||
Because of the conduct set down by you and the kings before you, living beings do not cross the limit of good behavior. You should not abandon that limit either.
तुमने और तुमसे पहले के राजाओं ने जो व्यवहार बनाया है, उसी के कारण लोग अच्छे बर्ताव की सीमा नहीं लांघते। तुम्हें भी वह सीमा नहीं छोड़नी चाहिए।
गुप्तं पुरुषसिंहेन ज्वलनेनामृतं यथा | कृतास्त्रमकृतास्त्रं वा नैनं शक्ष्यन्ति राक्षसाः || १३ ||
guptaṃ puruṣasiṃhena jvalanenāmṛtaṃ yathā | kṛtāstramakṛtāstraṃ vā nainaṃ śakṣyanti rākṣasāḥ || 13 ||
This lion among men guards him, the way fire guards nectar. So the demons will not be able to touch him, whether he carries divine weapons or not.
यह शेर जैसा आदमी उसकी रक्षा करता है, जैसे आग अमृत की रक्षा करती है। इसलिए राक्षस उसे छू भी नहीं पाएँगे, चाहे उसके पास दिव्य हथियार हों या न हों।
एष विग्रहवान्धर्म एप वीर्यवतां वरः | एष बुद्ध्याऽधिको लोके तपसां च परायणम् || १४ ||
eṣa vigrahavāndharma epa vīryavatāṃ varaḥ | eṣa buddhyā'dhiko loke tapasāṃ ca parāyaṇam || 14 ||
This one is dharma in human form. He is the best among the mighty. He is the wisest in the world, and he is completely devoted to austerity.
यह साक्षात धर्म है, इंसान के रूप में। यह बलवानों में सबसे श्रेष्ठ है। यह दुनिया में सबसे बुद्धिमान है, और यह पूरी तरह तप में लगा हुआ है।
एषोऽस्त्रं विविधं वेत्ति त्रैलोक्ये सचराचरे | नैतदन्यः पुमान्वेत्ति न च वेत्स्यति कश्चन || १५ ||
eṣo'straṃ vividhaṃ vetti trailokye sacarācare | naitadanyaḥ pumānvetti na ca vetsyati kaścana || 15 ||
He knows all the different weapons that exist in the three worlds, among everything that moves and everything that does not move. No other man knows this, and no one ever will.
वह तीनों लोकों में, चलने वाली और न चलने वाली हर चीज़ में मौजूद सारे अलग-अलग हथियारों को जानता है। कोई और आदमी इसे नहीं जानता, और कभी कोई नहीं जान पाएगा।
न देवा नर्षयः केचिन्नासुरा न च राक्षसाः | न नागा यक्षगन्धर्वाः समेताः सदृशा मुनेः || १६ ||
na devā narṣayaḥ kecinnāsurā na ca rākṣasāḥ | na nāgā yakṣagandharvāḥ sametāḥ sadṛśā muneḥ || 16 ||
No gods, no sages at all, no demons, no rakshasas, no nagas, no yakshas, no gandharvas—not even all of them together—are equal to this sage.
कोई देवता नहीं, कोई ऋषि नहीं, कोई असुर नहीं, कोई राक्षस नहीं, कोई नाग नहीं, कोई यक्ष या गंधर्व नहीं—सब मिलकर भी इस ऋषि के बराबर नहीं हैं।
अस्त्रमस्मै कृशाश्वेन परैः परमदुर्जयम् | कौशिकाय पुरा दत्तं यदा राज्यं समन्वगात् || १७ ||
astramasmai kṛśāśvena paraiḥ paramadurjayam | kauśikāya purā dattaṃ yadā rājyaṃ samanvagāt || 17 ||
Long ago, Krishashva gave him weapons that were very hard for others to defeat—he gave them to Kaushika, when the kingdom had come to him.
बहुत पहले कृशाश्व ने उसे ऐसे हथियार दिए थे जिन्हें दूसरों के लिए हरा पाना बहुत मुश्किल था—उन्होंने ये हथियार कौशिक को दिए, जब उन्हें राज्य मिला था।
ते हि पुत्राः कृशाश्वस्य प्रजापतिसुतोपमाः | एनमन्वचरन्वीरा दीप्तिमन्तो महौजसः || १८ ||
te hi putrāḥ kṛśāśvasya prajāpatisutopamāḥ | enamanvacaranvīrā dīptimanto mahaujasaḥ || 18 ||
The sons of Krishashva were like the sons of Prajapati. Those heroes, glowing and full of great strength, followed him.
कृशाश्व के बेटे प्रजापति के बेटों जैसे थे। वे वीर, चमकीले और बड़ी ताकत वाले, उसके साथ-साथ चलते थे।
जया च सुप्रभा चैव दाक्षायण्यौ सुमध्यमे | तयोस्तु यान्यपत्यानि शतं परमदुर्जयम् || १९ ||
jayā ca suprabhā caiva dākṣāyaṇyau sumadhyame | tayostu yānyapatyāni śataṃ paramadurjayam || 19 ||
Jaya and Suprabha, both daughters of Daksha, slim-waisted, had a hundred children between them, and those children were very hard to defeat.
जया और सुप्रभा, दोनों दक्ष की बेटियाँ, पतली कमर वाली, उन दोनों के सौ बच्चे थे, और वे बच्चे बहुत मुश्किल से हराए जा सकते थे।
पञ्चाशतं सुताञ्जज्ञे जया लब्धवरा पुरा | वधार्थं सुरसैन्यानां ते क्षमाः कामचारिणः || २० ||
pañcāśataṃ sutāñjajñe jayā labdhvarā purā | vadhārthaṃ surasainyānāṃ te kṣamāḥ kāmacāriṇaḥ || 20 ||
Jaya, who had earlier received a boon, gave birth to fifty sons. They were strong enough to kill even the armies of the gods, and they could go wherever they wished.
जया को पहले एक वरदान मिला था, और उसने पचास बेटों को जन्म दिया। वे इतने बलवान थे कि देवताओं की सेनाओं को भी मार सकते थे, और वे जहाँ चाहें जा सकते थे।
सुप्रभा जनयामास पुत्रान्पञ्चाशतं परान् | संघर्षान्नाम दुर्धर्षान्दुराकारान्वलीयसः || २१ ||
suprabhā janayāmāsa putrānpañcāśataṃ parān | saṃgharṣānnāma durdharṣāndurākārānvalīyasaḥ || 21 ||
Suprabha gave birth to another fifty sons, called the Samgharshas. They were hard to face, frightening to look at, and very strong.
सुप्रभा ने पचास और बेटों को जन्म दिया, जिन्हें संघर्ष कहा जाता था। उनका सामना करना कठिन था, देखने में डरावने थे, और बहुत बलवान थे।
एवंवीर्यो महातेजा विश्वामित्रो जगन्मुनिः | न रामगमने बुद्धिं विक्लवां कर्तुमर्हसि || २२ ||
evaṃvīryo mahātejā viśvāmitro jaganmuniḥ | na rāmagamane buddhiṃ viklavāṃ kartumarhasi || 22 ||
Such is the strength and the great power of Vishvamitra, the sage known to the whole world. You should not let your mind become troubled about Rama's going.
विश्वामित्र की ताकत और महान शक्ति ऐसी ही है, जो पूरी दुनिया में मशहूर ऋषि हैं। राम के जाने को लेकर तुम्हें अपना मन परेशान नहीं करना चाहिए।
अस्मिन्महासत्त्वतमे मुनीन्द्रे स्थिते समीपे पुरूषस्य साधो | प्राप्तेऽपि मृत्यावमरत्वमेति मा दीनतां गच्छ यथा विमूढः || २३ ||
asminmahāsattvatame munīndre sthite samīpe puruṣasya sādho | prāpte'pi mṛtyāvamaratvameti mā dīnatāṃ gaccha yathā vimūḍhaḥ || 23 ||
Good man, when this greatest of great souls, this lord among sages, stands close to a man, even if death has come for him, he becomes deathless. So do not fall into misery like a fool.
हे भले आदमी, जब यह सबसे महान आत्मा, ऋषियों में सबसे श्रेष्ठ, किसी आदमी के पास खड़ा होता है, तो मौत आने पर भी वह आदमी अमर हो जाता है। इसलिए मूर्ख की तरह दुखी मत हो।
