Rama is only a child. He does not know how to judge strength and weakness among armies in battle. Except for the inner palace, he has never seen any other battlefield.
na śastraiḥ paramairyukto na ca yuddhaviśāradaḥ| navāstraiḥ śūrakoṭīnāṃ tajjñaḥ samarabhūmiṣu || 7 ||
He has not mastered the finest weapons, and he is not skilled in war. On the battlefield, he does not even know the special weapons that crores of warriors use.
O virtuous, wise one, a father's love for his son gives more happiness than being with a young woman, more than the nectar of immortality, more even than a kingdom.
Even good, virtuous people take up hard, endless undertakings that bring trouble in all three worlds. They do this, without doubt, simply out of love for a son.
People can give up their lives, their wealth, even their wives, without much trouble, but not a son. O tiger among sages, this is simply the nature of living beings.
O sage, if you wish to destroy the demons' army, then take my army along with me. It is a complete force of elephants, chariots, cavalry, and foot soldiers.
kiṃvīryā rākṣasāste tu kasya putrāḥ kathaṃ ca te | kiyaṭpramāṇāḥ ke caiva iti varṇaya me sphuṭam || 24 ||
How powerful are those demons? Whose sons are they, and how did they come to be? How big are they, and who exactly are they? Please explain all this to me clearly.
sarvaṃ me śaṃsa bhagavanyathā teṣāṃ mahāraṇe | sthātavyaṃ duṣṭabhāgyānāṃ vīryotsiktā hi rākṣasāḥ || 26 ||
Venerable one, tell me everything, how one must stand against them in this great battle, against these demons of evil fortune who are so arrogant about their own strength.
This is one of those times that wears down even good people. Even I, a descendant of Raghu, have fallen into misery, because old age has worn me out and broken me down.
Or, Brahmin, if it is Lavana you mean, that son of Madhu who destroys sacrifices, well-known as a demon, even so, I will never let my son go.
And if you mean the two sons of Sunda and Upasunda, who are as fearsome as Yama, and who disturb sacrifices, say what you will, but I will not give you my son.
Having said these gentle words, that great-souled descendant of Raghu sank into a wave of doubt about the sage's intention. Even for a moment, he could not reach any certainty, bewildered like someone caught in the towering waves of the ocean.
