śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | prāpteṣu sukhaduḥkheṣu yo naśyati sa naśyati | yo na naśyaty anāśo'sāv alaṃ śāstropadeśanaiḥ || 1 ||
Sri Vasistha said: He who perishes in the face of happiness and sorrow, he perishes. He who does not perish is indestructible; scriptural teachings are sufficient for him.
Brahman alone shines as the universe, with its reality and brilliance. Due to its nature of consciousness and fluidity, it is like the ocean with its waves.
The world neither exists nor does it not exist, it appears due to consciousness; without consciousness, it does not exist. What is the meaning of this?
acetanaṃ cetanaṃ ca spandāspandavadātmanaḥ | svāyatte na kadarthasthe svasthapāṣāṇavatsthite || 18 ||
Both the conscious and the unconscious are like the vibrating and non-vibrating aspects of the self. They are not dependent on any purpose, remaining steady like a stone.
yasyekṣitasya no sattā nādhāro na ca kāraṇam | so'hamityeva yo yakṣo na jāne kuta utthitaḥ || 19 ||
That which is seen has no existence, no support, and no cause. I am that, says the spirit, but I do not know from where it arises.
Like the illusion of a crow's tail, the 'I' appears in Brahman. In the illusion of perception, it appears as its own form, like a halo around the moon.
Just as a crow sees a palmyra fruit as non-existent, the world appears as Brahman, the sky| Like a dream or an imagined city, how can that be different from it?
Just as the winds have various movements due to their very existence, so too the world and the individual self arise from Brahman, which is devoid of attributes.
Just as various forms like trees, elephants, horses, and deer are seen in a cloud, which has no real form, so too the world appears in Brahman, which is formless.
sargo'vayavavadbhāti sarva eva pare śive | evaṃ tadupamāṃ viddhi kāryakāraṇavadyathā || 29 ||
The creation appears as if it has parts, but in reality, it is all in the supreme Shiva. Know this analogy to be like the relationship between cause and effect.
Being internally peaceful, effortless, free from limitations, and devoid of delusions, due to the non-existence of the world, it should be realized as identical to the sky.
In the complete and undifferentiated, realizing the truth of the tranquil and complete nature, quickly give up the sense of 'I am this' for the sake of liberation.
Know that experience is bondage; know that freedom is the absence of experience. Remain as you are, according to your nature, and be tranquil without experience.
Due to the absence of the state of the seer and the seen, wakefulness itself is like deep sleep, resembling the clear autumn sky, devoid of any entity.
Thus, in the form of Brahman-consciousness, the vibration of the wind, as the awareness of consciousness here, creation and liberation are due to the awareness of Brahman alone.
Where the vibration of consciousness, known as Brahma, is the creation, it is said that there is no vibration of consciousness there, that is called Nirvana.
Just as the supreme consciousnesses are the manifestations of the states of being, similarly, all seeds are examples of that form, being of that nature.
The self is merely its own will, and it perishes by its own will | This transformation of duality and non-duality is like a city of imagination || 42 ||
Just as you have understood the difference between emptiness and space | Know the difference between Brahman and creation to be similarly without self || 43 ||
The peaceful existence that is the form of my speech, which was the existence of Brahman in the past | From itself, it becomes the sense of 'I am a human' due to ignorance || 44 ||
The saints describe the nature of consciousness as having two forms: agitated and unagitated. May you aspire for the highest good through that, be devoted to it, and do not be confused.
