Rama said: What is meant by a friend of knowledge and what is meant by a knower? What is the result of being a friend of knowledge and what is the result of being a knower?
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | vyācaṣṭe yaḥ paṭhati ca śāstraṃ bhogāya śilpivat | yatate na tv anuṣṭhāne jñānabandhuḥ sa ucyate || 3 ||
Vasishtha said: One who explains and reads the scriptures for enjoyment like a craftsman, but does not strive for their practice, is called a friend of knowledge.
Vasishtha said: Those who are satisfied with mere clothing and food, and who know the fruits of the scriptures, are called friends of knowledge, skilled in the craft of scriptural meaning.
Knowledge of the Self is considered true knowledge. Other forms of knowledge are mere reflections of this true knowledge, as they do not reveal the essence.
ātmajñānamanāsādya jñānāntaralavena ye saṃtuṣṭāḥ kaṣṭaceṣṭaṃ te te smṛtā jñānabandhavaḥ || 8 ||
Those who are content with other forms of knowledge without attaining self-knowledge are considered to be engaged in futile efforts and are called friends of knowledge.
Without the tranquility that comes from the expansion of knowledge and the known, one cannot be content. O Rama, having attained the state of a friend of knowledge, rejoice and do not indulge in worldly pleasures.
One should perform actions for the sake of food, and food should be consumed for the sustenance of life. Life should be sustained for the sake of inquiring into the truth, and the truth should be inquired into so that there is no more suffering.
