Rama said: How does the cessation of the perception of knowledge as an object occur, O Brahman? How does that firmly established notion of bondage cease?
śrīrāma uvāca | jñānasya jñeyatā bhinnā tvantaḥ keti mune vada | utpādyo jñānaśabdaśca bhāve vā karaṇe'tha kim || 6 ||
Sri Rama said: O sage, how is the knowability of knowledge different from the knowledge itself? Is the word 'knowledge' used to denote a state or an instrument?
Vasishtha said: Knowledge is merely awareness, a means to achieve a state. There is no difference between knowledge and the known, just as there is no difference between the wind and its vibration.
śrīrāma uvāca | evaṃ cet tat kathamayaṃ jñānajñeyādivibhramaḥ | siddhaḥ śaśaviṣāṇābho bhaviṣyadbhūtabhavyaśaḥ || 8 ||
Sri Rama said: If this is so, then how did this illusion of knowledge and the known arise? It is like the horns of a hare, something that will be, has been, and is being.
śrīrāma uvāca | yo'yaṃ pratyakṣadṛśyo'rtho mune tvamahamādikaḥ | bhūtādiranubhūtātmā sa kathaṃ nāsti me vada || 10 ||
Sri Rama said: O sage, this object that is directly perceived, which includes you, me, and everything else, how can it not exist? Please explain this to me.
śrīvashiṣṭha uvāca | ādisargavidhāveva virāḍātmādiko'nagha | jāto na kaścidevārtho jñeyasyāto na saṃbhavaḥ || 11 ||
Sri Vasistha said: In the beginning of creation, O sinless one, even the Virat Atman and others are born, but there is no purpose for anything to be known, hence there is no existence.
Sri Rama said: O sage, this world-vision which includes the past, present, and future, is constantly experienced, yet why is it said that it is not born?
Sri Rama said: O Lord, how can it be that the world, which includes 'I', 'you', 'this', and so on, is not born, even though it is experienced from the beginning of creation?
Sri Vasistha said: It is certain that an effect arises from a cause, and not otherwise. In the ultimate tranquility of all, there is no cause for the creation of the world.
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | yadasti kāraṇe kāryaṃ tattasmātsaṃpravartate | na tvasajjāyate rāma na ghaṭājjāyate paṭaḥ || 17 ||
Sri Vasistha said: That which exists as the effect in the cause, it arises from that. But the non-existent does not arise, O Rama, just as a cloth does not arise from a pot.
Sri Vasistha said: O sinless one, by what means do creations exist up to the great dissolution? O wise one, what is the nature of the experience that exists there?
śrīrāma uvāca | jñaptyātmikā śrīstatrastā tādṛśeranubhūyate | vyomātmikā tu na bhavenna sattāmasadeti hi || 20 ||
Sri Rama said: The glory that exists there is of the nature of consciousness and is experienced as such. However, that which is of the nature of space does not exist, for it is neither being nor non-being.
Vasishtha said: If this is so, O mighty-armed one, then the knowledge of the three worlds is indeed the body of pure knowledge. How can there be birth and death?
śrīvasiṣṭha uvācakāryakāraṇatābhāvādbhāvābhāvau sta eva noidaṃ ca cetyate yadyatsvātmā cetati cetitam || 23 ||
Vasishtha said: Due to the absence of cause and effect, both existence and non-existence are the same. This is perceived by the self, which is the perceiver.
Vasishtha said: The seer does not become the object of perception because the object of perception is non-existent. Only the seer shines alone, being the essence of all selves.
Shri Rama said: That which is pure consciousness, without beginning or end, perceives the perceivable. How can this world appear without the perceivable?
Shri Vasistha said: Indeed, the perceivable does not exist without a cause. Due to the absence of the perceivable, the freedom of consciousness is always indescribable.
śrīrāma uvāca | evaṃ cet tadahantādi cetyaṃ kathamidaṃ kutaḥ | kathaṃ jagadvedanaṃ ca kathaṃ spandādivedanam || 28 ||
Shri Rama said: If that is the case, how and from where does this perceivable, such as the ego, arise? How is the knowledge of the world and the perception of movement possible?
Shri Vasistha said: Due to the non-existence of the cause, nothing is produced in the beginning. Therefore, from where is the perceivable? All creation is merely an illusion.
Shri Rama said: In this state of pure, motionless, and unblemished consciousness, where there is no trace of the perceivable, how can there be any illusion?
Vasishtha said: O Rama, due to the absence of cause, there is indeed no delusion. Everything is peaceful, one, and free from disease, beginning with 'I am you'.
Rama said: O Brahman, I seem to have fallen into delusion, I do not know much to ask. I am not fully awakened, what should I ask now?
Vasishtha said: Ask about the root of the cause itself, do not be destroyed by the lack of cause. In the supreme, inexpressible nature, you will find rest yourself.
śrīrāma uvāca | manye'haṃ kāraṇābhāvātpūrvameva na sargatā | uditā tena kasyāyaṃ cetya cetanavibhramaḥ || 34 ||
Rama said: I think that due to the absence of cause, there was no creation before. From that, whose is this delusion of the conscious and the unconscious?
Sri Rama said: From where does non-practice arise, and from where does practice arise? From where does this delusion, which is of the nature of practice, arise again?
Sri Vasistha said: Due to the infinite nature of the infinite, there is no delusion at present. The delusion of practice encompasses the entire unharmed great treasure of consciousness.
Sri Rama said: O Brahman, by the grace of the initial instruction and the wealth of words, what else is there to say when everything has attained peace?
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | upadeśyopadeśātma brahma brahmaṇi saṃsthitam | bodhātmani na mokṣo'sti na bandho'stīti niścayaḥ || 39 ||
Sri Vasistha said: The essence of the instruction is Brahman, which is established in Brahman. In the self-aware consciousness, there is neither liberation nor bondage, this is the certainty.
Sri Rama said: When there is no distinction of place, time, action, substance, perception, and consciousness, how does the existence of all things arise?
Śrī Rāma said: How can there be knowledge when there is no existence of the knower and the known? When duality and unity are impossible, and the cause of Brahman is non-existent.
Śrī Rāma said: When knowledge itself becomes 'I' and 'you', then there is a difference in knowledge. How can this be in the infinite, pure, and boundless?
Śrī Vasistha said: That which is the nature of knowledge is called 'I'. Duality is described here as the vibration of the wind, like the vision of the seer.
Sri Rama said: Just as the calm ocean takes on the form of waves and other things as they are, similarly, the self-awareness of the pure self should be understood as it is.
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | evaṃ cet tat kathaṃ kaḥ syād doṣo dvitvādidōṣataḥ | anante sthita ekasmiñchānte pūrṇe pare pade || 47 ||
Sri Vasistha said: If it is so, then how can there be any fault arising from duality and other defects in the infinite, tranquil, complete, and supreme state?
Sri Vasistha said: In the realization of the true nature of the self, there is no bondage or truth. How can there be enjoyment of duality when the self is the form of all things?
Vasishtha said: By reflecting on the past and future, the objectivity of things ceases. Even in dreams, when such reflection is established, the gross perception dissolves.
Vasishtha said: One who is free from desires sees the world as an illusory reflection, like a city appearing in the sky, or a painting washed away by the rains.
Vasishtha said: When one knows the true nature of things and understands that delusion is the essence of the self, then the body is released from its grasp, and gradually the visible world diminishes.
Vasistha said: When the delusion of the body is calmed and the mind attains its true nature, freed from the heaviness of restraint, one finds peace in the world.
Rama said: O revered one, what is this tendency of consciousness towards objects? How does the mind, which is essentially non-conscious, lead to liberation?
Vasishtha said: The object does not exist at all. How can consciousness perceive what does not exist? Therefore, the existence of the mind is not real.
Shri Vasistha said: The knowledge of the duality of beginning and end does not exist. The world does not arise, it is eternally unborn from the beginning.
Shri Rama said: If something is unborn from the beginning, it does not arise at any time. How is that which is of the nature of non-existence and without appearance experienced?
Shri Vasistha said: That which is non-existent appears as existent, unborn, and without cause. It arises like a dream in the waking state and is experienced as real.
Shri Rama said: Whatever is seen and experienced in dreams and imaginations is due to the impressions of the waking state and the continuity of experience.
śrīrāma uvāca | na jāgradrājate svapne tadbrahmānyattadeva hi | buddhametatkathaṃ tvanyadapūrvamiva bhāsate || 80 ||
Rama said: The waking state does not shine in the dream. That Brahman is indeed different from that. How does this known thing appear as something new?
Vasishtha said: The unperceived and the perceived both appear as objects of the mind. In creation, end, beginning, and middle, it is practiced by itself, thus it appears.
Sri Rama said: Thus, this world appears to be dream-like to the enlightened one. How can this dream-like illusion, which is like a planet, be treated as Brahman?
Sri Rama said: The mind is the cause of dream experiences. Therefore, that mind itself is the universe, which is devoid of beginning and end, essence, and disease.
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | evaṃ cittaṃ mahābuddhe mahāciddhanameva tat | tathāsthitaṃ na svapnādi kiṃcanāstītarātmakam || 85 ||
Sri Vasistha said: Thus, O great wise one, the mind is indeed the great treasure of consciousness. Established thus, there is nothing else like dreams or anything else.
Vasishtha said: Thus, the world, which is eternally unborn from the beginning, does not exist at all. Therefore, it is unchanging, peaceful, unborn, and known to all.
Rama said: I consider the creation, existence, and destruction of the world to be illusions, like the illusion of a crow and a palm fruit. These illusions are accompanied by the false notions of being the seer and the enjoyer in the supreme state.
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | yā vyāpāravatī rasādrasavidāṃ kācitkavīnāṃ navā dṛṣṭiryā pariniṣṭhitārthaviṣayonmēṣā ca vaipascitī | tē dvē apyavalambya viśvamakhilaṃ nirvarṇitaṃ nirvṛtaṃ yāvaddṛṣṭidṛśo na santi kalitā nau śūnyatā no bhramaḥ || 89 ||
Vasishtha said: The poetic vision that is full of activity and the discriminating insight that is firmly established in the ultimate reality are both necessary for describing the entire universe as content and peaceful. As long as these two visions are not disturbed, there is neither emptiness nor illusion.
