śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | na ca prabhūtabhogeṣu na puṃstve na ca jīvite | na cendriyajayonmuktau dīpastanudṛśo yathā || 2 ||
Vasistha said: Neither in abundant enjoyments, nor in manhood, nor in life itself, is there liberation without the conquest of the senses, just as a lamp is not visible to the blind.
Therefore, listen to this flawless method for the conquest of the senses. The body attains perfection through one's own effort and with ease through this method.
Know the pure consciousness as the person, known as the living being because of consciousness. That which is conscious is the inner self, and it becomes one with it instantly.
By the sharp goad of the awakening of the effort of consciousness, the intoxicated elephant of the mind is conquered, and thus one attains victory, not otherwise.
The mind is the leader of the army of senses; victory over it is the ultimate victory. For one whose feet are covered with shoes, the earth is as if covered with leather.
svasaṃvidyatnasamrodhādyathā cetaḥ praśāmyati | na tathāṅga tapastīrthavidyāyajñakriyāgaṇaiḥ || 8 ||
As the mind becomes calm through the effort of self-awareness, it does not become so through austerities, pilgrimages, knowledge, sacrifices, or rituals.
Whatever is experienced is experienced in consciousness by consciousness. Indeed, it is forgotten due to the effort of enjoyments; that is the victory.
One who is endowed with discrimination and has a noble soul is said to have conquered the senses. Such a person is not deluded by the waves of desires in the ocean of existence.
By realizing the truth, the confusion of worldly existence comes to an end, just as the illusion of water in a mirage leads to suffering from a false fall.
anākāraṃ yathā vāri kṣīṇaṃ vahati no punaḥ | akāraṇaṃ tathā dṛśyaṃ jñānacchinnaṃ na rohati || 19 ||
Just as water, which is formless, does not carry the exhausted form again, similarly, the perceived world, which is without cause, does not grow when severed by knowledge.
This entire universe, which is perceived as 'I' and so forth, is merely ignorance. It is situated in the pure consciousness, peaceful and having the form of mere emptiness.
That which is the essence of pure consciousness, whatever kingdom is considered great, is not the form of the doer, action, or instrument. It is like the form of the world in consciousness.
By the sky of consciousness, the reflection of one's own self is perceived in the sky at the beginning of creation. This world is indeed rootless, like the crow's beak.
This appears to be rootless, even though it is unreal, it appears real. Therefore, whatever shines here is known as that very state.
ābhāsamātraṃ dṛśyātma cinmātraṃ śāntamavyayam | sthitamāsthāḥ kimetasmin sva bhāve sve vicāryate || 31 ||
The visible world is merely an appearance, while the pure consciousness is peaceful and imperishable. What is there to be considered in this inherent nature?
The individual soul, awakening from sleep, enters the dream state from the waking state. Whether awake or asleep, it remains in the same form.
The waking, dream, and deep sleep states are all the fourth state for the awakened one. There is no ignorance for him, even though he is in duality, he is non-dual.
Those who are ignorant play with the confusions arising from the distinctions of duality and non-duality, and the contexts of statements. The wise laugh at them.
taccittāstadgataprāṇā bodhayantaḥ parasparam | kathayantaśca tannityaṃ tuṣyanti ca ramanti ca || 40 ||
Those whose minds are focused on that and whose vital energies are directed towards it, enlighten each other, always speaking about it, and are satisfied and delighted.
One who is free from spiritual afflictions, steadfast in the heart, humble, and not seeking power, is a laughingstock to the world, even if situated in the highest position.
What is this happiness that is like a sprout of desire for kingship and wealth? In the rest of the knowledge of the truth, the position of the king of gods is like a blade of grass.
This has been said many times, yet the foolish one asks, 'What is this?' It should not be accepted even if it is said so many times; the ignorant one does not understand this.
Those who say, 'This well belongs to my father,' drink the salty water, being of low intellect. Just as you are discerning, do not be afflicted by ignorance.
