Shri Vasishta said: Such manifestations of consciousness continuously arise in the great ocean of the Supreme Self, spontaneously from within the Self.
Just as the vibrations of the wind continuously arise and manifest in the sky, similarly, the manifestations of consciousness continuously arise in the space of consciousness.
Just as the radiance of the sun arises from the sun itself, similarly, the manifestations of consciousness arise from the Self and remain unchanged until they are replaced by another.
Just as the universe, which is made up of various parts, is one, similarly, the space of consciousness, which is made up of various manifestations, is one.
In one's own self, the appearance is like a dream city, in consciousness, it is a wonder| What is essential, what is non-essential, what is real, what is unreal?
parijñātamidaṃ yāvatsarvaṃ cidvyomamātrakam| dṛśyaṃ jagadbhavadbuddhaṃ na sannāsadkimucyate || 8 ||
All this is known as far as it is the mere space of consciousness| The visible world is understood to be neither real nor unreal| What can be said about it?
In the world of transmigration, which is entirely the space of consciousness, everything is auspicious| What is the knowledge of existence and non-existence, situated as it is?
They arise spontaneously from the ocean of the self, like waves, appearing as effects and causes| They are inherent in the self, from the divine self, seen as cause and effect
When the body of the meditator is exhausted, and the vision is fixed in meditation for a moment, what power can there be apart from pure consciousness?
ciddhātuvyomabhāgo yo bhāti yatra yathā yathā | tathā tathā sa tatrāste yāvaditthaṃ svabhāvataḥ || 16 ||
The element of consciousness, which is the space of the self, shines wherever and however it does. It exists there in that very manner as long as it is so by nature.
Even for those who do not discriminate, the illusion of the visible world does not cease, just like the defects of timira (eye disease), dvīndu (double vision), and other such ailments do not cease.
Just as the earth does not exist in a dream, even though it is experienced, so too this perceived reality does not exist, even though it is experienced as unreal.
Just as the realization 'This is not real' arises from awakening from a dream, so too the realization in the waking state arises from awakening after death.
Externally, due to the complete similarity of qualities such as 'it is so,' there is no superiority between the waking and dream states, just as there is no difference between the twin gods Yama.
Whatever is experienced in the waking state is like a dream, and whatever is experienced in a dream is like the waking state. This is not so only in terms of time for both states.
Thus, in the totality of similarity and in the totality of experience, the perception of the waking state appears like a dream, and the dream appears like the waking state.
Just as the seen world and the word 'world' always have the same meaning, so too the words 'waking' and 'dream' are remembered to have the same essence.
In the infinite expanse of consciousness, where is the place for the negated? In the realm of the seen, known as ignorance, where is bondage or liberation?
There is neither knowledge nor ignorance. This is pure consciousness alone, which shines forth. It is like space, formless, like a dream, the creation and the body.
In the transition from one place to another, that which is the form of consciousness in the middle is indeed the form of what is seen in the waking and dream states.
The consciousness-sky itself is the thought of non-duality, and the consciousness-sky itself is the thought of difference. In duality and non-duality, there is only one, thus peaceful and undivided.
sadaṃśo bodhatadgrāhyamaya eva yathā tathā | dṛṣṭā ya eva dṛśyaṃ taddvaitavedanamekakam || 43 ||
The part of existence is the cognition of the object of cognition itself. As it is, so it is. The seer is indeed the seen, that perception of duality is one.
O fortunate one, according to the sequence, remain in your natural state, rise, drink, enjoy, and feed others. Having attained the desired state, with a mind free from attachments, you will merge into the supreme abode of pure consciousness.
