Shri Vasishtha said: In the year known as Shantabhaya, on the mountain known as Jaladhara, there is a tree. Drinking such bitter water in Shakadvipa, he remains.
The western one, in the winter season, attains the state of a stone. He is quickly liberated by the southern one through the use of beef and other means.
Apart from the universal pure consciousness, there is no self for the knowers of that. In the realization of the absolute non-existence of the seen, there is the destruction of the seer and the seen.
The soul of the universe, manifesting as the form of the universe, is seen as both the seer and the seen. What is that, by whom, how, and when does it become the body of the universal soul?
O knower of truth, tell me the difficult to achieve, the nature of the achievable and the unachievable. Therefore, from that eternal singular consciousness, the wise vision arises.
Indeed, in the form of knowledge and ignorance, what name exists in the supreme self? The supreme knowledge is appropriate for the one who has not attained, being confused by the objects.
paśyantyanubhavantyāśu cikitsante ca saṃkaṭambodhākāśaḥ svakādrūpādīṣaccyuta ivāśu cet || 21 ||
Those who see (paśyanti) and experience (anubhavanti) quickly (āśu) heal (cikitsante) the distress (saṃkaṭam). The space of knowledge (bodhākāśaḥ) from one's own form (svakādrūpāt) falls (īṣaccyuta) like (iva) quickly (āśu) if (cet).
Thus (tad) it assumes (ādatte) another form (anyatām) as if (iva) stable (susthito) even (api) as it is (yathāsthitam). Sri Rama said (uvāca), 'If (cet) the wise (vipaścitaḥ) are awakened (prabuddhāḥ), how (kathaṃ) can they attain (āditām) the state of a lion (siṃhavṛṣa)?'
dikṣu yāntīti me brahmanbodhāya kathayāśvalamśrīvasiṣṭha uvācaprabuddhāḥ kathitā ye te yoginaste mayānagha || 23 ||
In the directions (dikṣu) they go (yānti) thus (iti) to me (me) O Brahman (brahman), for knowledge (bodhāya) tell (kathaya) quickly (āśvalam). Sri Vasistha said (uvāca), 'The awakened (prabuddhāḥ) who are spoken of (kathitā) those (ye) yogis (yoginaḥ) by me (mayā) O sinless one (anagha).'
From the form of attachment (prasaṅgarūpāntarato) not awakened (na prabuddhā) the wise (vipaścitaḥ). O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), the wise (vipaścito) are not awakened (prabuddhā) skillfully (nipuṇaṃ) not (na) they (te).
bodhābodhadṛśormadhye te hi dolāyitāḥ sthitāḥmokṣacihnāni dṛśyante bandhacihnāni cābhitaḥ || 25 ||
In the midst of knowledge and ignorance, they are indeed situated in a state of fluctuation. Signs of liberation are visible, and signs of bondage are also seen around them.
Even with effort, if one is bound again, what is the use of the fallen fruit? The body, with its attributes, also attains the state of liberation while living.
gṛhyate tadgataṃ teṣāṃ cetastvacalameva tatmokṣo hi na parajñeyo dhāraṇādiprayogavat || 33 ||
Their minds, which are unsteady, grasp that which is related to it. Indeed, liberation is not to be known by others, like the practice of concentration, etc.
That which is self-aware is indeed that which experiences the pleasure of tasting honey and other pleasures and pains. That itself is the one who experiences bondage.
The bondage is said to be due to the afflicted mind, but it is not seen in the body or other things. Even if the body is cut into pieces or if the kingdom is bestowed.
For those who are liberated while living, by their very nature, they never truly die, even if they appear to be dead, nor do they truly cry, even if they appear to be crying.
The liberated one, who is of great intellect, does not truly laugh even if they appear to be laughing. They are free from desires, yet appear to have desires, free from anger, yet appear to have anger.
yadyathā nāma saṃpannaṃ tattathāstvitareṇa kim | haro hariṇaśāvākṣīmakṣīṇaśarato'śru ca | dhatte vapuṣi dugdhābdhirguptāmṛtakalāmiva || 47 ||
Whatever name is given, it remains as it is, what else can it be? Lord Shiva holds the doe-eyed one, whose tears are not diminished, in his body like the ocean of milk holding the hidden nectar.
tasmādasattve sattve ca rāgadveṣakṣayodaye | na manāgapi bhedo'sti jñakhaṃ prati svarūpiṇi || 63 ||
Therefore, in both the unreal and the real, in the rise and fall of attachment and aversion, there is no difference whatsoever in the true nature of the self.
Through the pure knowledge of the self, other virtues become as vast as the sky. How can there be any difference in the minds of those who are liberated while living?
sādyantamapyanādyantamaśūnyamapi śūnyakaṃ | jagajjātaṃ tathā'jātamaruddhaṃ ruddhameva ca || 68 ||
The world, though having a beginning and an end, is also without a beginning and an end. Though not empty, it is empty. It is born, yet unborn, destroyed, yet undestroyed.
Thus, what is born and destroyed is Brahman itself, which shines as the sky. Just as a wooden pillar is the same as its wooden nature, so too is the world the same as Brahman.
That which is free from all parts and divisions, which is equal, sleepless, and without a seat, know that to be the world pervaded by the pure consciousness of the sky.
In the transition from one place to another, that which is the form of consciousness in the middle, know that to be the world pervaded by the pure consciousness of the sky, without blinking.
The visible universe, which is the pure essence of the space-sheath, remains silent and still like a stone | Having given the name 'universe' to it, alas, the self is deluded by this illusion || 74 ||
