śrīrāma uvāca | vāṅgmaunamakṣamaunaṃ ca kāṣṭhamaunaṃ ca vedmyaham | suṣuptamaunaṃ mauneśa brahmanbrūhi kimucyate || 2 ||
Rama said: I know the silence of speech, the silence of the senses, and the silence of wood. O Lord of Silence, O Brahman, tell me what is meant by the silence of deep sleep.
Vasishtha said: Having realized the truth of this world, remaining established in the cultivated self, even if appearing like an ordinary person, one who is content within is known as a liberated sage.
Mental silence is the fifth type, and it is attained through the practice of austerities. In the state of deep sleep, one is known as a liberated soul.
Silence of speech is indeed silence, this is established. That mind is indeed impure, for the bondage of the soul, therein situated, the ascetic endures penance.
That which is without division and without practice, which is eternal and established in the beginningless and endless, is called deep sleep and silence.
Having understood the world as it is, free from the illusion of diversity, one realizes the true nature without doubt, which is deep sleep and silence.
The self, which is of the nature of various consciousnesses, is pervaded by Shiva alone. Thus, the established infinite is called deep sleep and silence.
The sky is neither existent nor non-existent, everything both exists and does not exist. Thus, the mind is calm and peaceful, that is the silence like deep sleep.
Since there is only pure consciousness, how can there be any calculation of one's own and others? Therefore, infinite deep sleep is the ultimate silence.
One who is absorbed in deep sleep, similarly in the fourth state, or even in the state beyond the fourth, these states can also occur in the waking state.
turyasya eva sakalāmalashāntivṛttirjāgratyapi vyavaharanni puṇaṃ samantāt | nityaṃ sadeha uta vāpi videha eva brahmannabhobhavata eva kilāsti sādho || 30 ||
The pure and peaceful nature of the fourth state is experienced even in the waking state, skillfully engaging in all activities | O Brahman, it is said that this eternal state exists with or without the body.
oṃmityudastabhavavāsanamekamāssva na tvaṃ na cāhamapi nānyadihāsti satyam | sarvaṃ ca vidyata itīha kilāntarābhaṃ jñastiṣṭha cidgaganakośakalaikanṣṭhaḥ || 31 ||
By chanting Om, remove all worldly desires and realize the oneness of the Self. There is no 'you' or 'me' or anything else here; this is the truth. Everything exists here, but it appears different. Remain steadfast in the knowledge of the Self, which is the essence of the sky of consciousness.
