15.6.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | imaṃ viśvaparispandaṃ karomītyastavāsanam | pravartate yaḥ kāryeṣu sa mukta iti me matiḥ || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said, the person in whom the idea I make this whole universe move has died out, and who still works at his tasks, is free. This is what I think.

pauruṣīṃ tanumāśritya kecidetatkriyāratāḥ | svargānnarakamāyānti svargaṃ ca narakātpunaḥ || 2 ||

Taking on a human body, some people stay busy doing these very acts, and go from heaven down to hell, and then back again from hell up to heaven.

kecittvakarmaṇi ratā viratā api karmaṇaḥ | narakānnarakaṃ yānti duḥkhāddhuḥkhaṃ bhayādbhayam || 3 ||

But some people love doing nothing at all, and even after they stop acting, they go from one hell to another hell, from one sorrow to another sorrow, from one fear to another fear.

kecitsvavāsanātantubaddhāḥ karmaphaloditāḥ | tiryaktvātsthāvaratanuṃ yānti tiryaktanuṃ tataḥ || 4 ||

Some are tied by the thread of their own desires, and pushed on by the fruit of their acts, they pass from an animal body into a fixed body, a plant, and from there go back into an animal body again.

kecidātmavido dhanyā vicāritamanodṛśaḥ | vicchinnatṛṣṇānigaḍā yānti niṣkevalaṃ padam || 5 ||

But some are blessed knowers of the self. They have looked closely at their own minds, they have cut the chains of craving, and they reach the state that stands alone.

purā katipayānyeva bhuktvā janmāni rāghava | asmiñjanmani yo muktastasmādrājasasāttvikaḥ || 6 ||

O Raghava, one who has lived through only a few births before, and who becomes free in this very birth, is for that reason a person whose nature is both rajasic and sattvic.

jāto'sau vṛddhimabhyeti pārvaṇaścandramā iva | kuṭajaṃ prāvṛṣīvaainaṃ saubhāgyamanugacchati || 7 ||

Once born, he grows the way the moon grows to its fullness. Good fortune follows him the way it follows a kutaja tree in the rainy season.

yasyedaṃ janma pāścātyaṃ tamāśveva mahāmate | viśanti vidyā vimalā muktā veṇumivottamam || 8 ||

For the one whose present birth is his last, o wise one, pure knowledge enters him very quickly, the way pearls enter a fine bamboo.

āryatā hṛdyatā maitrī saumyatā karuṇā jñatā | samāśrayanti taṃ nityamanataḥpuramivāṅganāḥ || 9 ||

Nobility, warmth, friendliness, calm, compassion, and wisdom, all of these always come and settle in him, the way women live in the inner rooms of a palace.

yaḥ kurvansarvakāryāṇi puṇye naṣṭe'tha tatphale | samaḥ sansarvakāryeṣu na tuṣyati na śocati || 10 ||

He does all his tasks, and even when his merit is destroyed, and its fruit too, he stays the same through all of it. He does not feel pleased, and he does not grieve.

tamāṃsīva divā yānti tatra dvandvāni saṃkṣayam | śaradīva ghanāstatra guṇā gacchanti śuddhatām || 11 ||

In him the pairs of opposites melt away, the way darkness melts away in daylight. In him the inner qualities turn clear and pure, the way clouds clear away in autumn.

peśalācāramadhuraṃ sarve vāñchanti taṃ janāḥ | veṇuṃ madhuranidhvānaṃ vane vanamṛgā iva || 12 ||

All people are drawn to him, gentle and sweet in his conduct, the way forest deer are drawn to the sweet sound of a flute in the woods.

naraṃ pāścātyajanmānamevaṃprāyā guṇaśriyaḥ | jātamevānudhāvanti balākā iva vāridam || 13 ||

Rich qualities of this kind chase after the man in his last birth the moment he is born, the way cranes fly after a rain cloud.

Then, full of good qualities, he follows a teacher. The teacher fixes him firmly in that purifying discernment.

vicāravairāgyavatā cetasā guṇaśālinā | devaṃ paśyatyathātmānamekarūpamanāmayam || 15 ||

Then, with a mind full of good qualities, given to inquiry and free of craving, he sees the shining self, one single form, untouched by any trouble.

tanotyayaṃ vicāreṇa cāruṇā śāntacetasā | prabodhanāya prathamaṃ manomananamāntaram || 16 ||

With a fine, calm-minded inquiry, he first carries out, in order to wake up, an inward turning over of the mind.

ye hi pāścātyajanmānaste hi suptaṃ manomṛgam | prabodhayanti prathamaṃ guṇahīnaṃ mahāguṇāḥ || 17 ||

Those in their last birth are themselves rich in good qualities, and they are the first to wake the sleeping deer that is the mind, which on its own has no good qualities.

prathitaguṇānsugurūnnniṣevya yatnādamaladhiyā pravicārya cittaratnam | gatimamalāmupayānti mānavāste paramavalokya ciraṃ prakāśamantaḥ || 18 ||

Those people who serve teachers famed for their good qualities, and who work hard with a clear mind to closely examine the jewel that is their own mind, reach the pure state, after gazing for a long time, deep within themselves, at the highest light.
